Editorial Reviews

No Beginning No End is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity, bound together by Jose James' transcendent voice. It marks a new chapter in the artistic journey of the 33 year old singer/songwriter. Conceived, recorded and produced independently without any recording contract, the album is his most personal statement yet. James has already established himself as a trailblazer for his intoxicating blend of jazz, R & B and electronica from his previous three albums. His 2008 debut The Dreamer and its 2010 follow-up, Black Magic both produced by renowned DJ Giles Peterson transformed the Minneapolis born, New York based singer into an underground sensation in both the modern jazz and DJ culture scene. His musical path follows its own rhyme and reason. James is a musical omnivore, an artist that resists being pigeonholed, equally at ease on stage with jazz legend McCoy Tyner as he is in the studio with rapper Oh No or electronic pioneer Flying Lotus.

The music of José James is an exciting mélange of jazz, R&B and soul.
The new album (his first album for the seminal jazz label Blue Note) most likely is better than his previous recordings, at least it is more attractive and pleasing: it is just different and we must applaud James for being able to take this leap.
"No Begininng No End" is more creative exploration than groundbreaking but essentially pushes the envelope: the result is some pretty amazing, intense, soulfully elegant music from this young New York-based singer .
His vocals are as evocative, groovy and sensual as ever.
He is joined by some excellent musicians, who add further variety to the blend : New York vocalist Emily King on the scintillating "Heaven On The Ground", the French-Moroccan singer Hindi Zahra on the astonishingly hypnotic, tribal "Sword + Gun", the extremely talented pianist/keyboardist Robert Glasper on "Vanguard", accomplished Italian bassist/session master Pino Palladino (who co-produces the album) and the highly respected drummer Chris Dave.
With his peers, José James has brought an uncomplicated sultriness, freedom and magic to this music that should continue to attract a multitude of fans in the years ahead.

Musician José James further asserts reason to believe that R&B music is NOT dead. Describable artistically as an amalgam of soul and jazz in addition to other influences, the talented vocalist delivers a strong punch on 2013's No Beginning No End. His first recording for esteemed jazz label Blue Note, James does not concern himself with being characterized as a jazz artist; he is most concerned about being an artist. The results, hence, are nothing short of sound and ultimately enjoyable. No Beginning No End follows up 2010's For All We Know.

"It's All Over Your Body" sets the tone, establishing a soulful, jazz-influenced groove within bass and drums. Horns further accentuate the production and the cool sound. Much like the production, James adheres to a soulful, yet cool and relaxed vocal approach. The results yield a superb opener and one of the effort's crowing achievements. "Sword + Gun" loses no momentum, sporting a funky bass line and an ethnic percussion styled groove. Guest Hindi Zahra adds subtle vocal contributions, complementing James's chill vocals. A desirable timbre, "Sword + Gun" possesses a hypnotic effect.

"Trouble" argues for the top spot on the set. Soulful and more overtly R&B than many, "Trouble" may be one of the shorter cuts, but proves to be one of the most fiery. Driven even more by the appearance of organ, James remains cool, but does so passionately. "I need someone like you, to understand my heart baby and my soul," he sings on the memorable chorus.

I bought the vinyl copy, and it's wonderful 180g pressings with plastic sleeves, definitely a surprise for the price. Great vocals and beats throughout this album. I heard it first on NPR (you can search to find a streaming link) and had to buy it the next day.

Saw Jose on Letterman awhile back and really liked him and his band playing "Trouble" from this recording. Sadly the rest of the material is forgettable and way too many "D'Angelo" slow grooves for my taste. The production is bass/ drum heavy to a fault. It sounds like the rhythm tracks for a hip-hop record not jazz. There is one extended solo from other band members and no liner notes other than featured artists. This guy is on Blue Note, but apparently the company is trying to distance themselves from their jazz tradition. I really wanted this CD to shine but it barely shimmers. Producer,Pino Palladino should know better especially with his long history is the music biz.

This has to be one of the most hotly anticipated jazz projects of 2013. Only, it’s not a jazz project, not in the purist sense of the word, not even in the fusion and smooth jazz derivatives of its father genre. No, James on his fifth solo album joins a movement spearheaded by artists like Nicholas Payton and carried forward by Blue Note label mate Robert Glasper and peers like Esperanza Spalding to abandon the notion of sticking to a single genre, given their varied musical interests and influences. Coined Black American Music or BAM by early adopters, James’ new, more muted album tries to find a mainstream audience for a talent whose more purist and experimental efforts, like Glasper’s and Spaulding’s, have been rewarded with critical acclaim and international touring, but little in the way of commercial sales success. However, as a vocalist with an undeniably jazz trained instrument, James’ challenge is different from his brass, string, and woodwind playing peers; and No Beginning, No End reveals the promise and limitations of this new strategy of becoming more of a household name through “musical freedom.”

The average fan of José James knows two albums backwards and forwards: The Dreamer and BlackMagic, two jazz classics largely produced by DJ Gilles Peterson, but also by popular producers like Flying Lotus and Moodyman. Collectively, these producers created powerful, edgy soundscapes for James’ dreamy baritone to sit in with a relaxation that is akin to easing into a hot milk bath after a long day. The results were nu-jazz for the modern age done with a Minnesota-born, New School trained voice that owed much to jazz men like Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock, Billy Eckstine, and, of course, Nat King Cole.
