Negativland clipped, transformed, and re-imagineered all the found sound they could get into their computer, and out came "No Business." A lovely die-cut sleeve houses a CD tribute to stealing on the internet, file-sharing, jamming popular culture, nose cream and one very insistent piece of pie. It also comes with a 56-page essay about the cultural public domain which isn't one bit funny... and a rubber novelty device!

This release from Negativland has no performances from them at all. The performance is the manipulation of appropriated sources, commercials, movies, music, pop culture in general. They create social commentaries on copyright issues, create a hillarius trucker on reefer commercial, beatles vocal manipulation, and all tho the "wanna a piece of pie" track got too long, it was still very funny. All in all this is a very good release. Not onlydo you get a good cd, you get a 56 page booklet explaining cultural appropriation and a no copyright whoopy cushion! cd also has a video track thats cool, but was a pain in the ass to run. Its a video from the Fair Use book/cd. Vicious squirls and cats running the music biz.Very entertaining look at the issuses of found sound and copyright law.

I have enjoyed Negativland as a record collector and listener since their first and second release and although I appreciate their art, the release "No Business" doesn't come close to hitting the mark. There are much better Negativland releases and this work was all done much better with other works like "Guns" which was conceptually similar but crafted much better. The little film clip however is more like it and is worth while. The packaging is more in the spirit of the first three releases by having an interesting format, book and free whoopie cushion.
Also to warn on-line buyers, the "star" rating system on Amazon needs some calibration. To get a more honest appraisal, one needs to take off at least one or two stars if not more than what is shown.
