Book Description

From internationally bestselling British author Susan Lewis comes an unflinching, thoroughly suspenseful novel—perfect for readers of Jodi Picoult—about the darkest secrets a family can hide.

Alex Lake’s life is centered on helping people. Her job as a social worker in a British seaside town is more than a career: It’s the very essence of who she is. And though there are frustrations, Alex takes to heart the rewards of placing a child in a safe and loving home. But when she encounters three-year-old Ottilie Wade, Alex is completely unprepared for the effect the sweet, shy little girl has on her. Though on the surface Ottilie seems to want for nothing—she’s perfectly healthy and lives in a very nice home—she’s mysteriously silent and asocial. Alex knows that something is not right in the Wade house. And the deeper she looks into the case, the more Alex comes to feel that she and Ottilie are being drawn together by fate.

As disturbing evidence mounts and Alex’s superiors seem unwilling to help, Alex knows she will have to risk everything—her job and the life she loves—to save Ottilie. But Alex will also have to wrestle the demons of her own past before she can secure a future for this child in need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Follow that gut feeling... August 7, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
"No Child of Mine" was a difficult book to read, as well it should be. Child abuse - mental, physical, sexual - is the subject of Lewis's international bestseller. And when you match up a wisp of a darling little girl and abuse, it becomes very difficult to read. I actually had to take breaks from reading when the subject material became too much to bear.

This is the exceptionally well told story of Alex Lake, social worker worker with a huge heart in England. It tells of many of her clients that she helps but focuses on Ottilie, a three year old little girl with dreadful secrets. And Alex know how that feels because she grew up with terrible secrets of her own.

Lewis tells this story with boldness, letting the reader see the seamy, painful, distressing, and disgusting underside of the abuse of children. She tells the story in detail, not leaving much out (it is 500+ pages plus a reader's guide on top of that). But the story, even being this long, held my interest all the way through.

And the author caught me off guard with a twist at the end - and that doesn't happen often.

I just started reading the sequel to this book - [[ASIN:034554773X Don't Let Me Go: A Novel].

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good story!! June 18, 2014

This is a prequel to her book entitled, "Don't Let Me Go." Both were very good books, but you might find them more suspenseful if you read this one first, before the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!! Absolutely amazing book!! May 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is probably one o the most amazing books I have read in a long time. So heartwarming and heartbreaking. So well written and truly catching from the first page.

The multiple stories within the main story just simply keep one fully engaged throughout the novel.

The story of Alex and her job as a
Child Protective worker, her past, her current challenges, as well as her special connection to one of her assigned cases is captivating in itself. Adding to it the current situation and wonderful personality of three year old Ottille and the connection they share. As Alex puts together the puzzle pieces of Ottille's home life, she spends a lot if time teaching and sharing many different aspects of life and new experiences with Ottille.

The final twist brings back parts of Alex's past as they seem to merge into Ottille's present and the decisions which are made from there.

A book you will not be able to put down and be so glad you read...

I recommend s it highly...you will not be disappointed.

I am looking forward to the sequel...

I loved this book! Susan is an exceptional writer. This book grabbed my attention on the first page and kept me engrossed throughout and it lingers with me still. I worked as a children's caseworker, and Susan's depiction of Alex's tough and heartbreaking job is so absolutely true-to-life. I plan to read every book this author writes.
