I first read this book long ago as a child at my grandmother's home in Arizona. The story takes place in Florida, my home state. I was enthralled. I still am. I taught 4th grade forever, and read this book to my students each year. I have kids with beards, coming up to me at football games to tell me that this is still one of their favorite books. It has a strong family with a single mom, a great cast of finely crafted characters, and a great mystery to boot.
