3.0 out of 5 stars Okay Read
I am a huge fan of Mrs. Alers books. I waited a long time for Micheal Kirland's story which I was a little dissapointed. I thought the story was dragged out to long and they fell in love to quickly. It was to much over the top but toward the end I thought it picked up a lot. What's the deal with the heroine always tall and slim some of them sound anorexic. Although I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read, January 28, 2002
This review is from: No Compromise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
In Rochelle Alers first book of the Sons and Brothers of the Hideaway Trilogy we are introduce to Michael Kirkland and Jolene Walker. Michael is so much like his father in attitude, love of his job, and love of his woman.

After deciding to take a six month leave from the service Michael is trying ot figure out his future. He had planned to make the army a lifelong career. Now he just doesn't know. Within the first week of his leave he is invited to a dinner party for his friend's mother. This is where he saw her walk in. Michael is instantly attracted to Jolene before they are formally introduced. And when he discovers that she will be his dining partner he is determined to learn all about her.

Jolene Walker is the executive over a center for abused women. After losing her twin sister to domestic violence she puts her heart out to help women get away from their abusers. When she meets Michael at the dinner party some of her priorities change slightly.

The relationship between Michael and Jolene is truly a love story in the making. At first Jolene does not want to get involved with Michael because her first marriage ended when she had to choose between her job and her marriage. But Michael is determined to break all the barriers that she puts up and make her his wife and mother of his children.

If you have read any of Rochelle's books you will know that there will be alot of passion and romance as well as alot of action. And she does not disappoint us in "No Compromise," as Jolene tries to help a victim of domestic violence.

I can't say to much without giving away the story line. But if you want to read a book that is so good and has so much love that you will lose sleep on, I urge you to get this book. Also you will get caught up on other members of the Cole, Kirkland and Sterling family.

Thanks Rochelle for keeping the legacy going.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Army of One!!!!!, January 30, 2002
This review is from: No Compromise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
To my delight Rochelle debuts her Hideaway Sons and Brothers trilogy with Michael Kirkland, Vows still remains my favorite of the Hideaway series. We get a glimpse of Michael in Just Before Dawn, Sara and Salem's story as well as Private Passions, Emily and Chris' story, but now, the spotlight is on him, a few years older and facing a major career indecision. CPT Kirkland's career with Military Intelligence has been his driving force he has definitely proven to be his father's son in many ways. Ms Jolene Walker, Executive Director of the Sanctuary, a program dedicated to victimized women, a program that holds more than a special meaning for Jolene whose passion behind her work contributed to her failed marriage and now only that passion for her work drives her.

Michael has taken a six month leave of absence from the military to decide the direction of his career, he is invited to a party by an old friend he met while on assignment in Japan, and even though the party has a couples theme Michael elects to make a solo appearance. Jolene has a comfortable date set to attend the party with, however, an emergency changes her plans and couples her with the sexy fine, Michael Kirkland, where needless to say fireworks are about to explode. Michael is immediately captivated with the model gorgeous, Jolene and she equally with the tall greeneyed soldier, a soldier who begins a mission to capture the heart of the women who makes him lose all control.

Jolene is afraid of exploring the strength of her emotions for Michael, she has guarded her heart since her divorce and has no intentions of repeating past mistakes but somebody should have warned her about the relentless pursuit of the Cole-Kirkland men when they have their prey targeted for capture. When Jolene's life is threatened, Michael becomes her protector and avenger in true Kirkland fashion. This book is worthy of the Hideaway legacy, 379 pages was not enough. I am patiently waiting on Tyler's story at 39 his time has come. Thank you Rochelle, you do have a way with words.

If you've followed Rochelle Alers' Hideaway series, you
will love No Compromise, the 1st book in the Sons and
Brothers Trilogy.

United States Army Captain Michael Kirkland is at a
crossroad. His dream to remain a career military man is
beginning to wane. And the fact that his ranking officer
has been making covert passes at him adds to his dilemma.
To save his career, he decides to take six months leave to
determine his next course of action. Also Michael is now
desirous of some permanence in his personal life.

Jolene Walker, the director of a safe haven for abused
women, is dedicated to her job. She is convinced that
her life is just where she wants it. Coerced into
attending a private dinner party given by her best
friend, Jolene agrees to entertain a male attendee who
is without a date. She by no means expects this sexy,
virile, intense gentleman to be her assignment for the
night, but Captain Kirkland is who she gets.

As usual with Ms. Alers stories, this one if filled with
mystery and intrigue. Someone is trying to harm Jolene,
and Michael has decided that he will be her protector.
And because Jolene takes him where no other woman has,
he wants to fill another role.

While this story is very capable of standing alone, I
implore you to go back to Hideaway, the freshman story
in this collection, and begin a journey that will have
you immersed in family drama like no other. Eager to
revisit family members and friends, I read this book
in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars She has did it again, February 9, 2002

This review is from: No Compromise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
I would just like to express my gratitude for Mrs. Alers, because once again she has captured my heart as well as my mind with another captivating and passionate story from the Hideaway Legacy. These characters seem to truly come to life and become one with you. You get the sense that you actually know these wonderful families she has created. Of course I loved this book, but then again, any book written from this series, I love. Michael was a splitting image of Joshua, be he was not as controlled. That I liked about him a lot. I liked Jolene's character as well, because she was independent and her own spririt. She made it quite clear that she did not base her sole existence on a man. The book was very intriguing and kept me in suspense. I am highly looking forward to reading about Tyler's story. I am sure it will be well written as well. One thing I am curious of though, is whatever happened with Arianna?? Did she marry that Morrocan designer boyfriend she had been dating or what??? None the less I am pleased with what I have been given so far. Again thank you Mrs. Alers. You truly have been blessed with talent. I wish you nothing but the best in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging mix of traditional and contemporary, December 4, 2010
This is the first book I have read by Ms Alers but hopefully not the last. It ticked all of the requisite boxes for me: well-written and articulate, solid storyline as a backdrop with just the right amount of suspense, tons of passion & romance, a gorgeous looking, fascinating couple and last but defintely not the least: an alpha male with a soupcon of tenderness. Who also happens to cook well, protects his mate, willingly gives great massages and fulfils his woman in every way. And not just physically- though the intimate scenes were tasteful, sensual and never overdone. Again, a perfect balance.
I especially enojoyed how Micheal used his military background to ferret out and deal with the villain. A man who is able to use a careful combination of brawn AND brains is always sexy. Especially when he achieves his goal.
What else can I add that has not already been said? A really engaging tale that left me wanting more when it ended. Although Ms Alers played the usual trick of introducing a slew of secondary and tertiary characters plainly as a prelude to their individual stories being told in subsequent books I did not find them distracting at all. If anything it was fun reading about Michael's extensive and accomplished family; I look forward to catching up on their lives. It seems clear the author is old school and I did find some of the language and mannerisms a little stiff and formal however I pressed on and was ultimately rewarded with really great writing.
I did feel a niggle of unease about the plentiful references to skin tone and eye colour. Hopefully this was used as a descriptive tool and not a disurbing glimpse of the authors personal issues with regards to colour or to promote some kind of colourism agenda.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT & MATURE, February 16, 2009
I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to read a book where the couple was kind of "old school" but still hot. Men don't seem to "court" women anymore so it was nice to see a character actually do that in a story, maybe women these days will learn not to be so easy and accessible. Plus I loved the way the male character was a true "man" while still letting the woman be independent. Great book!

This review is from: No Compromise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love all of Ms Alers books. No Compromise was an excellent kick-off to the Hideaway Sons and Brothers Trilogy. As with all the other Hideaway series books, this one was packed with intrigue and passion. Jolene was a social worker married to her job until sexy U.S. Army Captian Michael Kirkland showed her a life filled with love and passion. When danger threatens to destroy their new found love and happiness, Michael is willing to risk his life to protect the woman he loves.

If you haven't read the Hideaway series yet, I encourage you to do so. Each book left me wanting more. I can hardly wait for Dr. Tyler Cole and Gabriel Cole's stories. Excellent job Ms. Alers. Keep 'em coming.

This review is from: No Compromise (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
Rochelle Alers is definitely a master storyteller. The first book that I purchased written by her was Heaven Sent. I found that this book was book four in a series called Hideaway. I went out and purchased all the previous Hideaway Series books. I found her to be a wonderful, humorous and vivid writer. I've even read some of her story that aren't in the Hideaway Series. They all can definitely stand on their own. When her fans asked her to continue the Hideaway Series with the Daughters and Sisters Trilogy, she graciously complied. We weren't disappointed either.

NO COMPROMISE is the first installment in the Sons and Brothers Trilogy.

Michael Kirkland the military guru decided to take a long need break from the career. He was an expert in so many areas. I found him to be THA BOMB! He meets Jolene Walker, who is a tall and regal young woman. Michael is instantly attracted to Ms. Walker. He finds that she is not only beautiful, but smart.

Jolene is also attracted to Michael, but isn't trying to get involved with anyone at this point in her life. Besides, she is married to her job and hadn't had a real relationship in a while.
Jolene is the Executive Directory of a place called Sanctuary. Sanctuary is an excellent place for abused women to come for help and refuge. Jolene had to admit to herself and to Michael that she was really interested in him. She started feeling different about herself after she started seeing him. But she still didn't want to take things too far too quickly.

Michael and Jolene embarks upon an adventure full of love and intrigue.

It was so good visiting the other family members. I know Ms. Alers has two more installments in this series. I guess the question would be will she continue this series with the next Generation of Cole, Kirkland, Delgado. I guess only time will tell. I will say if she does decide to continue, I know we won't be disappointed.
