Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Though she is considered one of the finest 19th-century poets, Bronte's poetry has generally been neglected and overshadowed by Wuthering Heights. Much that is familiar to readers of the novel will be found in the 101 poems presented here: descriptions of the moors and proud, defiant, suffering, aloof people. Included are 33 Gondal poems, based on the imaginary Kingdom of Gondal invented by Emily and Anne Bronte, which are separated from the other poems. Unfortunately, the poems are not annotated, no rationale is proffered for the order in which they have been arranged, and no dates of writing and publication are given. However, this collection is recommended for libraries that have little of Bronte's poetry.

This review is from: No Coward Soul Is Mine: Emily Bronte Poems (Hardcover)
Emily Bronte personifies much in her poem "No Coward Soul is Mine". The poem describes in detail and yet confusingly the relationship between heaven, earth, God, and a man's immortality which is characterized in her poem by our soul. She begins with man's emotional burdens which later is reflected in the destruction of everything but the one soul of man. Many descriptive adjectives are used to ultimately describe man's defeat by what kept them alive and the unavailability of death which plagues the end of the world. Bronte finally describes guiltlessly of the lonely souls of man after the destruction.
