5.0 out of 5 stars This book had me in tears I was laughing so hard.
This is without a doubt one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is Denis Leary's stand-up routine put into book form. I used to commute from New Jersey into Manhattan and you should have seen the stares I was getting from fellow commuters because I was laughing out loud while I was reading it. Leary's cynical view on drugs, drinking, rock and roll bands and life...

Sardonic. That word came to mind when I arrived at this page and simultaneously thought of Denis Leary. You knew he was sardonic though, already, didn't you? Then he's probably much less of an actor, considering his persona on film/stage and off leaves no room for wonderment. But he is consistent.

I used to commute from New Jersey into Manhattan and you should have seen the stares I was getting from fellow commuters because I was laughing out loud while I was reading it. Leary's cynical view on drugs, drinking, rock and roll bands and life in general is a roller coaster ride of laughs. Buy this book and you will laugh loud and often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even more than the special and CD, July 5, 2001

This book is pretty much the script from the stand-up special for Leary's 1992 No Cure For Cancer show. It has more though, it doesn't have as many curses and goves even more in depth to Leary's ideals about drugs and all that stuff we know and love. It's as and possibly even more brilliant as the special, as Leary makes even more keen observations. For instance, the reason Irish people drink so much? The Irish music is always sad. Great.

I have more than two words for you: Buy this book now and finally understand why you smoke, drink and do whatever you should not be doing (duh!).

No Cure for Cancer is an extended rant, travelling through the general touchstones of Drugs, Drink, More Drugs, Smoke, Meat, War, Life and Death. Throw in a hefty dose of 1st generation Irishness, some common sense, and a fashionably regretfull 1970's existence and you've got a good read. In particular, the Introduction and the passage about his father stand out. Entertaining, occasionally laugh-out-loud inducing, and consistent with his character in film and on his TV shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it, January 6, 2009
This review is from: No Cure for Cancer (Paperback)
I purchased Denis Leary's "No Cure for Cancer" as a gift for my son and couldn't resist reading a little before wrapping...it is just hysterical! He is witty, sarcastic, and spot on with his humor. If you like Denis Leary, you will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, April 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: No Cure for Cancer
This comedy album is unlike anything I had ever heard before. It's full of nervous energy and fire and spritz and lightning and it zings all over numerous well-deserving topics. Much as I liked the comedy routines, however, I was absolutely delighted with the songs, in particular "Traditional Irish Folk Song," which still makes me laugh every time I hear it. If you're of Irish descent or if you've ever spent an evening in an Irish pub, then you will love this song.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, June 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: No Cure for Cancer (Paperback)
Leary, who is a master at finding the faults in the world, delivers a hilarious performance on stage, scripted in this book. He talks about how he is angry at the world for criticizing smokers, and how he is angry at vegetarians for not leaving us meat eaters alone. It starts off well, with the lyrics to the song "A**hole" and goes from there with his hilarious comedy. Some of this book, is not even on the tape. It is for the real Denis Leary fan. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly funny, dark humor!, March 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: No Cure for Cancer (Paperback)
Man, once I read this, I found that, unlike any other kind of comedy books (i.e. Dennis Miller, George Carlin, etc.); I could read this book over and over, and STILL LAUGH! This book contained old subject matter, but was still great. For anyone who loves comedy, and doesn't mind swearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dennis Leary strikes another blow ..., January 17, 2006

Navy Bean "Navy Bean" (Amsterdam/Dayton, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: No Cure for Cancer (Paperback)
Thank you Dennis for giving all those hope who are a little light on the talent side, but who own a leather jacket, let their hair down in their face and a possess a disproportionate affinity for their own jokes. They CAN make it in the biz. A 21st-century Paul Lynde, Dennis knows how to go for the jugular and doesn't take any prisoners. Don't let appearances fool you, he's tough -- even though he has arms like Lindsay Lohan. And for those of you who are always comparing his face to Keith Richards, I call sour grapes! I didn't laugh at this book, but I don't think that was the intention.
