4.0 out of 5 stars Some Grade A Tracks Here
I remember chillin' to 'Steelo' back in the day and so I was excited to get my hands on this album again. This is the perfect definition of a `chill album'. The vibe here is just completely becoming and really sits well on the listener. 5.0 out of 5 stars I listened to it more carefully., May 27, 1999

I laid down and really listened to 702's smash debut, "No Doubt," and I decided these aren't another bunch of ambitious females trying to make it big because they've already made it big. This album went gold and I don't think that was enough. It should have sold well over several million copies but I think everyone will be purchasing 702's self-titled second album after hearing "Where My Girls At?" My new favorite songs on this album are "Finding My Way," "Get It Together," "All I Want," "Not Gonna," and my most favorite, "No Doubt". This is not a flaky trio of girls. Irish is my fav and the group's got major flava!

5.0 out of 5 stars An R and B Classic, March 19, 2010
This review is from: No Doubt (Audio CD)
I was in the 7th grade when this cd dropped. I was beginning to form my taste in good music and learn most about what moved me. This cd was really a big part of what shaped my taste. Looking back at it - The music is very generic and falls in line with what was out at the time, yet its the group members and there smooth vocals that stand out most. Not to mention Missy's fab writing skills on some of the tracks. Though this is Missy's earlier stuff before she changed the game with Timbaland, her work on this album are the best cuts. I can listen to 'Round and Round' 12 times in a row. Kameelah is like the songbird of the 1990's and really the most slept on female vocalist given the amount of raw talent, great skill, and the beautiful voice she has. The girl can go! As a teenager, she is on the disc doing riffs and runs that will make your heart collapse on itself. Its one thing to just do runs, but Meelah has like this passion and unique style with hers that left a lasting impression on me forever. Her vibrato and tone - *sighs* - I miss this kind of singing in R and B. I loved all the girls, though. Misha had a strong soprano voice and Irish has the mellow alto. I love 702. Its so sad that they aren't here with us now on the scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOAH!!!!! this girls are great...., November 8, 2004

702 are one of my favourite r&b groups of all time... these girls are tight to def... i loved them when i first saw them in 'steelo' w/ missy elliot... that girl can produce a song... 'steelo' was my favourite song at that time... the beat was crazy and i flipped when missy was on it because i loved missy at the time....

my favourite song on the entire album is 'all i want' which is also on the GOOD BURGER SDTK (which i have as well)... this song is great and the girls sound great....

'get it together' was the breakup song in middle school... when a couple breaks up we used to sing that song when they would walk in the hallways (well you all had to be there)...

anyways, 'no doubt' is another hot joint on the album as well...

all three 702 albums (NO DOUBT, 702, and STAR) are some of the best works in my cd collection, especially STAR which is a constant in my car.... too bad the girls are broken up...

get this album to start or finish your r&b collection no disappointments whatsoever....

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely debut album from serious talent!, October 18, 2004
By
This review is from: No Doubt (Audio CD)
I bought this album initially back in '97, just for the song "Get It Together", because I loved the song and the video was on point. I recently dusted this album off and realized that this album is truly an R&B gem.

702 really brings it hard with this album, something unheard of from such young girls. Usually, girls their age put out teeny-bopper music that you get sick of hearing after one or two listens, but 702 brought it. Check out the song "Steelo". It's tight, not too Nickelodeonesque, with just enough adult flavor to keep your head moving. Plus, we get a lovely cameo from Missy Elliott, who really was coming into her own back then. Another standout is the song "Not Gonna", with a serious diva attitude all up in it! The song is just so tight and is reminiscent of the 90s New Jack swing era.

The slower songs fare well as well. "Get Down Like Dat" is my song! That song is tight, using a sample from Barry White's "Strange Games and Things" (which was also used by Destiny's Child in their hit "No No No Part II"). Kameelah throws down in the vocal department here and lets you know that she ain't one to be messed with! Also, "Get It Together" is a treasure within itself, with its strong delivery and tight harmonies. Also worth mentioning is the song "Word Iz Bond", which has that laid-back feel to it, thumping along effervescently.

The only problem that I had with this album isn't even all that much of a problem. I wanted to hear some of Irish's and LeMisha's vocals on leads. Don't get me wrong, Kameelah can blow, but I would have liked to hear some more of the other two girls. LeMisha was too tight on "Word Iz Bond" and I wanted to hear more!

These girls knew that they were doing it with this one, and this album got them numerous awards and a memorable performance at the 1997 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. This is the stuff that girl groups are made of!!

I've known 702 ,from media experiences, since 1994,when they sang on Subway's "This Lil' Game We Play." They sound very well. Their debut album "No Doubt" is the bomb. It only sold 500,000 copies it should have went multi-platinum. YOU NEED TO COP THIS ALBUM.

3.0 out of 5 stars This album is pretty `chill'..., January 20, 2010

This is the perfect definition of a `chill album'. The vibe here is just completely becoming and really sits well on the listener. What's funny is that, on their own, there aren't many songs here that I really love, but this album is one of my favorite background albums. I can put this on at work and get things done with the nice flow of R&B slickness mellowing out the office. I think the reason that I don't generally love a lot of the songs on their own is that they are very dated, but when they play, one after the other, they create a nostalgia that gives me a good feeling throughout the day.

I still really love `Steelo' and `Get it Together'. Those are probably the only songs here that I can listen to apart from the complete album and still thoroughly enjoy. `Steelo' was one of my favorite songs growing up and listening to it now still brings me to a happy place (remember when Missy Elliott was everywhere?). I loved the soft and gentleness of `Get it Together' because it stuck that balance of tender yet powerful. You can feel the breakdown in these girl's voices.

`Word Iz Bond' is atrocious.

The rest of the album is very simple, very forgettable yet very respectable. There isn't really anything that makes you go "wow, I have to listen to that again" but there is nothing you'll be aching to turn off. That's why I say that this album works so well as a whole and not in pieces. I wouldn't seek out to listen to any of these tracks on their own, but like I said, I chill to this entire album quite often.

It just has a really nice flow from start to finish.

Songs like `Not Gonna' and `Get Down Like Dat' have that infectious 90's R&B vibe going for them, and `All I Want' has a playfulness that gives it a more relevant `pop' sound.

In the end I'm a little torn. Judging the content on its own I'm forced to give this album a C+. If I were judging the style and flow of the entire album I'd give it a B+ or an A-. Anyways, if you just want something to sit back and mellow out to then pick this up. If you want something to really delve into I'd find something else.

Does that make sense?
