a recreation of the Celtic ethos, January 4, 2002

It's amazing that the small county of Donegal produces so many high quality female vocalists (Clannad, Altan). I don't know if this is the most "authentic" of this group of musicians, but it is certainly one of the best albums in recreating a rural way of life which has probably vanished. Austere but romantic, the heartsore of this haunting, beautiful music is, in my opinion, something that is not so easily replicated in our urban, instant gratification societies. Although the instrumentation is sparse, Ni Domhnail's voice is so expressive, you almost wish to hear less accompaniment so to enjoy it more. This is the full effect, and I am not sure I have heard anything quite like it.
