Important fire safety for small children,
By
This review is from: No Dragons for Tea: Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) (Paperback)
This book provides important fire safety messages in a way that is not frightening to small chidren. And the storybook format makes it more likely that the messages will be reinforced by the parent or family member reading to their child. Several important fire safety rules are included; don't hide in the burning building, get low and crawl to safety, get out of a burning building quickly, meet at the agreed-upon meeting place, call 911, don't go back into the burning building, etc. A delightful and important book for young children.

I have been a professional fire fighter for more than twenty years. I thoroughly enjoy reading this book to my kids and to school children whenever I have the chance. The book covers important fire safety topics but folds the safety curriculum into a wonderful story. I have read this story aloud a hundred times and it has always been a wonderful experience. -- If I could, I would place a copy of this book into every young child's classroom.

My 4 year old LOVES this book!I had only talked briefly about fire safety until this book. It's written in a cute rhyming style, and it's easy to make it into a song or make it into a catchy tune while reading. We made it like a song. This really drew my child into the story, and even myself. I was so engrossed in it that I almost choked when I caught a glance of my child's wide-eyed horror look when we got to the climax part about the house catching on fire and needing to just get out leaving everything (toys) inside. I never stopped reading, and at the end, my child had tear filled eyes and just buried her head in my lap. We both cried, and then talked about the book and read it again. There is a cute summation poem at the end, that hits on the major point again that there's 'just one you' and doing what you need to do to keep yourself safe if there's a fire. This book lead us to a wonderful discussion about fire safety. Stressing the person is more important than what's in the house, getting out safe, having a meeting place, etc. My child has a hard time thinking of leaving her toys behind if the house were to catch on fire. I think it's wonderful how the books stresses the importance of the individual..."because there's just one you." We checked this out from our local library, and it's one we'll be buying to add to our own! Now, if this same writer/illustrator had one about strangers....

It's about a tea party catastrophe, but it's not just for girls. Dragon accidentally catches the house on fire in the middle of a tea party. He would have been in a lot of trouble if it wasn't for the wise girl he was visiting. She knew exactly what to do and calmly taught him fire safety. I believe the text rhymes through the whole story. After the story are a fire safety poem and fire rule list.
We homeschool, so I used this book to teach/review fire safety with all my kids (toddler to early elem.) I've also read the water safety book in this series. It's cute too, but the plot and safety rules don't blend together as well as they blended in this fire safety book. (Obviously, the poem and rules list at the back of the water safety book are good.)

I LOVE this book for my two young children. It is written in rhymes, so it keeps their attention. Plus the message has stuck! My 4 year old has talked about how she needs to "get out a da house" when she smells "fire smoke"! Highly recommended!

My 4 year old really loved this book. It's not one your read every day but can be read again and again. It had great points like not hiding during a fire. Very happy with it.

Cute story! I ordered this for my niece who just turned 3. She will be able to enjoy the book for a few years, I think. Her dad is a firefighter, so they appreciated the humor!

A great book for helping to teach fire safety,

I got this book to use as a giveaway at a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) meeting because our topic was fire safety. When I received it I read it through first and loved it! I ended up buying one for my kids - who love the book. It is a wonderful little story about a girl and a dragon. The dragon accidently catches their tea party on fire and the girl knows how to get out of the house safely and to not go back in. Children under 5 are twice as likely to die in a fire so teaching them fire safety is critical. The topic can be confusing and scary for them, but this book does an excellent job at helping to teach them while making it fun. A great book to reinforce what you are already teaching them about fire safety (or to help you get started teaching them!). I am going to buy the other books in this series now!

A Great Way to Educate and not Frighten,

I got this book from the library for my three-year-old. I didn't realize what a wonderful educational tool it was. It covers many aspects of fire safety and can open up an easy dialogue between you and your children about what to do in case of a fire. I have to admit I had never talked to my daughter about the topic because 1) it hadn't really occurred to me and 2) I wasn't sure how to not scare the pants of her talking about the house burning to the ground. But she loved the story and the illustrations all while effortlessly learning. Who could ask for more?
