5.0 out of 5 stars So interesting, April 20, 2006

I have an Asperger's syndrome diagnosis and some sort of shadow Tourette's traits. I loved this book. Antonio Hernandez is a fabulous writer. The previous reviewer compared him to Temple Grandin. I have some complaints about Temple Grandin, though she's very sincere in what she says. I don't have any complaints about Antonio Hernadez's statements about Autism or Tourette's.

Bishop E. Antonio Hernandez has written a book the scope of which has only been equalled by Dr. Temple Grandin. From ancient histories of Tourette's and autism to humorous mini-biographies of famous sufferers, Bp. Hernandez really delivers. Bp. Hernandez has given us a fantastic guided tour through the worlds of these awful neurological diseases, and he surprises the reader with what may be the biggest theory yet introduced in the field. Anyone who is in any way touched by Tourette's, autism or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder CANNOT afford to miss this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars No retreat indeed!, December 12, 2011
This review is from: No Duty To Retreat: The Stories of Tourette's Syndrome and Asperger's Autism (Paperback)
No Duty To Retreat: The Stories of Tourette's Syndrome and Asperger's Autism (2003). This is a fascinating look at the world of Tourette Syndrome and Asperger's Syndrome by an author who suffers from both conditions. The book covers deeply the history of both conditions, their earliest delineations and their misunderstood place in the medical spectrum.

The book leaps across every conceivable topic chapter by chapter; I love the way it speaks directly to the reader about each individual symptom and what it feels like - that is too rare in modern writing, and reminds me a great deal of the books by Dr. Oliver Sacks. In this book, you will learn the truth about diagnosis, misdiagnosis and the long road traveled by people afflicted with the conditions. There are also min-biographies of suspected sufferers, such as Albert Einstein and Thelonious Monk.

Nothing in this book seems dated or out of place. Get it, and learn what ought to be learned by the entire world about these conditions. This is an invaluable helpmeet if you or a loved one suffer from these conditions. This author's other book, My Kingdom for a Crown!: The Religious Skullcap, is a rare treat on an entirely different subject!
