Book Description

December 1, 2004 No Experience Required (Course Technology)
North Light's newest beginner series proves that anyone with an interest in art can draw or paint - no experience required! Combining North Light touchstones - reliable step-by-step instructions and plentiful illustrations - with a touch of humor, No Experience Required cuts to the core, focusing on simple subjects, simple compositions and a realistic style that builds confidence in beginning artists. Most importantly, they'll have fun doing it: An open, accessible design and occasional encouraging cartoons ensure that No Experience is a good experience. No Experience Required: Sketching and Drawing opens up the artistic experience to everyone, no matter what age or level. Readers will discover drawing's building blocks and then explore basic techniques through Blovits' illustrated exercises. Exercises begin with pencil and charcoal, the simplest mediums, and then introduce the properties of colour with conte crayon and pastel; Each illustration reinforces the techniques, while 28 exercises and demonstrations take artists from first stroke to finished drawing; Materials lists spell out exactly what artists need; A glossary of basic art terms quickly brings beginners up to speed; And, as part of the No Experience Required series, the book's Quick Tip and Words to Know sidebars make the instruction unintimidating.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In his contribution to the No Experience Required series, award-winning landscape and portrait artist Blovits schools fledgling artists in exploring drawing's basic building blocks via increasingly complex exercises, from monotone to color. Twenty-eight exercises and demonstrations using simple subjects help sketchers develop the finished products, learning as they work the concepts and techniques of values, hatching and crosshatching, hue, intensity, contouring, blending and rubbing, lifting and erasing, lighting to create the illusion of volume, and more. Novices will find especially helpful the detailed explanations of papers, pencils, crayons, charcoal types, pastels, erasers, and fixatives. Blovits even includes exercises on working from photos and using pastel on sandpaper. Complete with metric conversion chart, detailed shopping lists, numerous black-and-white and full-color illustrations, and glossary, Sketching and Drawing has great appeal. Whitney Scott

4.0 out of 5 stars Blovits divides drawing into small, manageable lessons, July 24, 2009
This review is from: No Experience Required! - Sketching and Drawing (No Experience Required (Course Technology)) (Paperback)

Blovitz organized a wonderful short course in sketching and drawing. Each short lesson contains a materials list along with a "Quick Tip" checklist. Then step-by-step, the technique (using the materials) takes the learner from novice to advanced beginner. Finally another 'quick tip' wraps the lesson.

To get the most use of the text, it should be read and reviewed several times to grasp all concepts. Then highlight or tab the pages for quick reference. You will find that you refer back to each chapter often - as issues of color choice, creating dimension, and implementing shading arise.
