5.0 out of 5 stars A charming picturebook with a positive message, September 7, 2011
This review is from: No Fair Science Fair (Hardcover)
Poor Otis is frazzled - he can't seem to pick a suitable subject for his upcoming Science Fair. Luckily, his teacher, Mr. Zee provides useful suggestions and Otis comes up with the idea of observing a bird feeder and recording the names of the birds that visit it. To his disappointment, hardly any birds come to his bird feeder, and as the day of the Science Fair approaches, Otis gets more and more disheartened. How is he to stand out among his competition when he can't even get birds to visit the bird feeder?

The story may be simple, yet the message is a powerful one. It encourages "stick-to-itness", or the merits of perseverance. Otis may not be having much luck, but he doesn't give up, which is a reward in and of itself. The beautiful color illustrations bring the text alive for young children, making this an engaging reading experience. It is a perfect read for that time of year when schoolchildren are all scrambling to get their Science Fair projects ready!
