One of the classic hard rock albums of all time,
By Paul Lawrence "'EJL'" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: No Fuel Left for Pilgrims (Audio CD)
This album thrust DAD into the hard rock stratosphere. What happened after is a story for another review. However on the strenth of this disc they were on the crest of a wave.
Danish nutters to the core, this band stood outside the North American hard rock scene and it showed. While so many bands circa 1989 were overblown and in for a good time but didn't quite realise how silly they looked, DAD came across as knowing just how ridiculous the whole business was. I mean, this is a band that used to have stuntmen perform mock fights on stage in their early days and pay weird country tinged rock with various 'country' props on stage. But to the heart of this album. The main theme here is driving simplicity. In fact their bass player famously used just two strings for much of the music. The riffs here are great and driving and the singles went straight into the charts in a number of countries. Tunes like Sleeping My Day Away capture youthful zest for partying all night brilliantly. ZCMI and Lords of the Atlas are whimsical with enough bite to keep your toe tapping. Other gems would be Girl Nation, sort of the flagship of DAD's attempt at world domination. Ridiculous lyrics, crazy video and the whole thing just gels somehow. The heaviest track on the album, Ill Will is a right stomper, a couple of minutes of blazing and driving madness, the closest this album comes to outright metal. The vocals of one Jesper Binzer sound suitably beer stained and he certainly attacks these songs with conviction. Production is good, as the record company had thrown a chunk of cash at this band in order to sign them and so didn't stint in this department. This is an album that you can play from one end to the other, perfect for parties with your mates or chugging down the highway. It always brings a smile to my face whenever someone throws it on.

If D:A:D had come out of Seattle, Atlanta or any other US city, this album would have gone platinum several times over. I count at least 6 songs that could have gone into the top 10. The band was big in Denmark throughout the 80s and 90s (during which time I went to high school and college in Denmark) and also made a name for themselves in Australia as far as I'm aware. For some unknown reason they never had a hit in the US though. Still makes me wonder. If you're into hard rock, then you ought to reward yourself and try this album. 18 years later (sigh) and it still rocks!

These guys rock!,

These guys are sensational. They perform a hard edged blend of hard rock that is as relevant today as when the album was recorded. I was happy to find this album on Amazon, I last heard it in '94 when I left uni and forgot about it until seeeing it here on Amazon recently. The best songs on the album undoubtedly are Girl Nation and Sleeping My Day Away. Both have catchy guitar riffs that you can play over and over without getting sick of. Sleeping My Day Away should be the anthem of the youth. If the record company promoted it, this album could anumber one seller today in the US! The best thing about this album is you don't feel like skipping one song. They are all well crafted, Ill Will, Rim of Hell, Overmuch and Jihad all go hard. If you like hard rock you are not complete until you own this album.

Found an old notebook with Headbanger Ball playlists written in it. Jumped online and found D.A.D. again after all these years. I owned this cassette and loved it (actually still have the cassette in a crate, I just don't have anything that plays cassettes anymore). Distinctive vocals and sound you'll love it too.

I only knew the song, "Sleeping My Day Away" before purchasing the cd. The rest of the cd is almost as good as this track.

Rim of Hell was in medium rotation for many radio stations back it the day, almost got tired of it. Fuel video was all over MTV. And Siamese Twin is an interesting take on the Twins Sex theme so many bands, Warrant, made cliche. Girl Nation video just plain boring and what probably killed interest in them. Overall album is great, subsequent albums dull.

1989's No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims was the third release from Danish rockers D:A:D, and was their breakout (and only) international hit album. The band, whose name was shortened from Disneyland After Dark (courtesy of the Walt Disney legal department), had an incredibly unique sound that took the typical hair metal style and added a rockabilly tone and swagger, an impeccable sense of melody and tons of personality. The band perfected this sound on No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims.
If Billy Idol and Brian Setzer joined L.A. Guns, they might have come up with an album like No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims. The album starts with the Hollywood hair metal sound, but Jacob Binzer's twanging rockabilly guitar and Jesper Binzer's powerful, charismatic vocals took the sound in a very memorable direction. The rhythms are very reminiscent of AC/DC, but there's an almost punk vibe on songs like "Wild Talk" and "Rim of Hell" that bring to mind TSOL and Sex Pistol guitarist Steve Jones's solo work. The album has party anthems ("Girl Nation"), straight-up rockers (the killer "Lords of the Atlas") and even all-out metal numbers (the closing 2-minute blast of "Ill Will"), and there's not a weak song to be found. I've heard a few of D:A:D's later releases, and while they were decent enough, none of them come close to how No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims feels. This was just a totally unique, totally enjoyable piece of hard rock perfection that just about any 80's rock fan should own. Edition Notes: Wounded Bird reissued No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims in 2007. It's a bare bones reissue with no bonus material and next to no liner notes, but it sounds like the album has been cleaned up a bit sonically. It doesn't sound like a full digital remastering, but it is a bit louder and clearer than the original. It's probably not enough of a difference to make it worth replacing your old version though.

yeah, and there from Denmark! I bought this CD when it came out as I had Heard of them while in England, if American Hair Bands ROCKED/Harmonized as well as these guys, the genre may not have ended up as LAME as it got, (also check out the CD release right after NFLFTP - (Riskin' It All)),, to bad the Band was forbidden from using its real name "Disneyland After Dark) - record/CD sales may have been very different in the US

Great songs, and an original sound,
By guitar_buyer "guitar_buyer" (Queens, NY) - See all my reviews

Few 80s glam bands succeeded with capturing a unique and original sound. The few that did, such as Cinderella, attained commericial and critical success. Dinsneyland After Dark (DAD) was an unfortunate exception to this rule. Although the band possessed great soungs on this album, with lush guitar textures of a clean guitar layered in with distorted guitars, they must've been too European to achieve a great level of success. Although this album went gold, it was DAD's most commercial, and best album.
