Biography

Ottawa used to be a lumber town. For some reason, it got chosen as Canada's capital. Beneath the federal veneer, its rural origins linger, drenched in woodsmoke, bar-brawls and glinting saw blades. Two hours down river from Montreal, the woods get a little thicker and the air a little cleaner. It's a place where the city lights merge with constellations, and where The Acorn was ... Editorial Reviews

The Acorn's long-awaited follow-up to 2007's wildly successful Glory Hope Mountain. In the summer of 2009 the band isolated themselves at a cottage in Northern Quebec to begin work on what was to become No Ghost. Although unplanned, this album represents the closing of a trilogy that began with their debut album, The Pink Ghosts (2004), and their Blankets & Tin Fist EPs in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Songs took shape at all hours, crafted from hazy late-night improvisations and early morning melodies pulled from the thinning threads of sleep. Modernity clashed with the bucolic via exploratory percussion, feedback, acoustic textures and the natural surrounding sounds. The band then traded trees for telephone poles to finish recording in a sweltering heatwave at Montreal's Treatment Room Studios (Plants & Animals, Angela Desveaux). There, the breezy ease of rural surrounds was buried under sweat-caked skin and cracked asphalt, birdsong drowned out by thick air and engine hum. The end result is a recording swaddled in dichotomy: togetherness and isolation, acoustic and electric, destruction and restoration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Deep November 12, 2010
Format:MP3 Music
Each song is a completely different beast, and by beast I mean beautiful piece of music. I can't recommend this album enough. They remind me of all the good things I love about bands like The Decemberists, Okkervil River, Beirut and The Arcade Fire. The album definitely grows on you too. Give it a listen; you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars "No Ghost" June 2, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
The Acorn have crafted some of most diverse and emotionally stimulating album i've heard in a while. There is something to be found on every song, and it progressivley gets better and better with every listen. For one, I've only had this album for about 42 hours and already its one of the fastest growers i've the plessure of listening too. The opener "Cobbled from dust" immedially introduces you into the sound and tone of the album. Lyrically its warm, and heartfelt yet being experimental and familar all at the same time. Theres "Rock" songs to be found here as well. "Crossed the Wire" is a monster of song, throwing you into an entire diffrent pace from soft spoken songs like "misplaced". But the song that really sticks out on this album is "No ghost", which in my opinion is song of the year. Isolation seemed to be the key to the music writing, which the band took too after living in a cottage in Northern quebec. There's a real wilderness feel too all of it. Theres much more to be said about "No ghost". These guys clearly know exactly how to crafted something for the listener on a very personal level. By far the one of the best of 2010, Every music lover needs this album, everyone.
