Best lyrics of any rap group period. most creative, thoughout rhymes that actually meant something, whether is was burning right wing conservatives, stomping dumb bigots, or simply blazing to start the day. "No Goats, No Glory" may not have been the "theme album" that their 1st - "Tricks of The Shade" was...but it was a better showcase of the band behind them, that made them the best live rap group I have ever seen. I grew up in Philly at the time when the Goats and the Roots were just breaking ground, and used to see them at clubs like Doc Watsons and the Trocadero, great period to be living in philly. Goats are still my favorite rap group, and they only made 2 albums. If you can find it...1 of the 2 MC's - MADD Max...released an album with his own band "Incognegro" - self titled album, it is my favorite rap album of all time. can't say enough about these guys. The Goats ARE hardcore rap.

p.s. to the guy from Kansas City who gave this 1 star...your comments make no sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must add to your 90's Collection!!!, February 18, 2010
This review is from: No Goats No Glory [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
Now that I have extra money in my life I am expanding my music collection.....especially from the 90's. This is a must have in your collection, and it's very unfortunate that this group was shunned by the radio stations because of their edgy lyrics (despite the crap we hear nowadays)!
I had the pleasure of hanging with Pat Swayzak (god I hope I spelled that right) back in 89' up in Allentown gettin' in trouble and listening to him spew his lyrics walkin' back from 'Daves' house late at night. Even then I knew he had a great future ahead of him..... just the times weren't ready for them, I guess! Oh, they had their following, but if they hit the market today they would freakin' blow up ova here!!!
I guess the point is, being a white boy with a really bad 'Billy Ray Cirus' mullet and listening mainly to hair bands at that time, Pat opened my eyes to not only a new and funky-ass sound...... but also to the social realities that were not being brought to the attention of the average 'MTV' listener at that time. Hell, he was a walkin' CNN to people that listened, but what makes money to the record labels is all that mattered in those days!
Pat..... I'm sure you'll pop on here and read this someday! It's your boy Eddie.......... now get back up and kick some asss, will ya! The world is ready for the remixes of 'Not Your Typical American' & 'Wake and Bake'. I even remember sitting in your apartment on 15th listening to you sing "Wake & Bake" for the first time and watching you put the lyrics together..... after Jon Jon just stopped by of course (wink!) ............................. The world is Ready for 'The Goats' once again!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just not the same., March 4, 2011

This is a great album don't get me wrong. But, the thing that made "Tricks of the Shade" so great was that it was amazong lyrically and it dealt with important issues. "No Goats, No Glory" is good lyrically (obviously lacks a little without Oatie Kato) but the content is 90% about marijuana. I smoke weed and I have no problem with rapping about it, but not when they started out so intelligent and politically driven. It seems that Oatie Kato along with being the best in the group, also had all the management and organizing skills. This album is so un-guided, it feels like a bunch of extra material they grouped together reather than an actual follow-up album.

Great album, not classic like "Tricks of the Shade"

Best songs (not hard to pick, there aren't many)

.Mutiny
.The Boom
.Wake 'N' Bake

NICE ALBUM, GREAT FOLLOW UP TO AN EVEN BETTER DEBUT. GET TRICKS OF THE SHADE FIRST AND THEN PICK THIS ONE UP TO COMPLETE THE COLLECTION.

3.0 out of 5 stars Takes some effort to get into..., June 26, 2006

The same group that dropped one of the best albums of '92 (Tricks of the shade) return 2 years later with a release, that unfortunately takes some effot to get into. The reason for this; unlike Tricks of the shade, there is very much a Rock/Metal influence throughout "No Goats, No Glory" that really, for me, sounds awkward and out of place especially with the solid lyrics & flows. It just doesn't sound right. Similarly, although some essence of their political vibe is still here, alot of no goats no glory focuses alot on blunts & ridiculous concepts that imply lack of direction. However, despite this the tracks "Wake N Bake", "The Boom", "Mutiny", "Lincoln Drive", "Blind With Anger" and "Times Runnin Up" are undoubtedly great tracks that maintain the album's overall worth from becoming a total waste of time.
Although I appreciate the kind of vibe that the goats were aiming for with this short album (EP), I still believe that it has not done them any justice and if anything will turn away listeners before "grabbing" them in. A disapointment for those looking for the same group that came out with the essential classic "Tricks of the shade". Pick that up first. PEACE!

Lyrics - 8/10
Beats - 5/10 (6 tracks ; great, 5; not so great)
Replay Value - 5/10 (very short and just under half not worth listening to)

Overall - 54% = 3/3.5 Stars!

This is to elevating the fusion of jazz, turntable(ism),rap and rock (shlock) as Kid Rock (shlock) is to elevating the human race. Jack off all trades......master of wack.
