No Gun for Asmir/Asmir in Vienna, August 20, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: No Gun for Asmir Pb (Puffin Books) (Paperback)
Based on a true story of a young refugee (Asmir) and his family moving from their beautiful home Sarajevo, where war has broken out, to peaceful Vienna in Germany. Book 1 (No Gun for Asmir) is about Asmirs family moving from Sarajevo and away from their father Muris, crossing lots of country borders, to Vienna, Germany. Book 2 (Asmir in Vienna) is about Asmirs new life as a refugee in Germany. Starting a German school, learning German and receiving his very own special book (No Gun for Asmir) that was published world wide.
The Asmir books are a great read for ages 11-15, very moving at sometimes and "a story of courage you will never forget" (as quoted on 'No Gun for Asmir').

Title: No gun for Asmir.
Author: Christobel Mattingley
Illustrator: Elizabeth Honey
This book is about Asmir who is a Yugoslavian. He was born in Sarajevo but he comes from Bosnia, Herzegovina. The book is based on a true story about Asmir and his family who are forced to leave Sarajevo because of the civil war. They leave Sarajevo to go to Belgrade which is then followed by a long car trip to go to Vienna. Asmir's father Muris is left behind in Sarajevo which causes Asmir to feel very upset throughout the story. Asmir travels with Mirsada, (his mother) Eldar, (his baby brother) Aunt Melita, (Mirsada's sister) Uncle Miroslav (Melita's husband) and Asmir's grandmother. (Mirsada and Melita's mother) they find a life in Vienna but to get there, there was many obstacles
No gun for Asmir is a book that is suitable for 10-15 year olds. Any younger and it would be too horrific, any older and it would it would be boring.
I think that No Gun for Asmir is a very good book. In some places you might get bored, but it is still a great story that everyone will enjoy.
I give `No gun for Asmir' an 8/10

The main character in this story is a boy named Asmir, who is around the age of 7.Where Asmir lives was a very happy place where kids copuld play and everyone was happy. This story is a sad story. It also has a good discription of Asmir and his family, and how Asmir and his family survived becoming refugees, when they started thier journey not being refugees. I think that this story is siutable for older kids and kids in primary , i think that the age group for for this story is 8 years and over.

This story is about a young 7 year old boy that lives in Sarajeve. He was so happy, until one day war came into Sarajevo. Bombs exploding, guns firing, people getting killed. Asmir gets everything that he needed to takelike clothes, foodpacked into hi pack back. And they went of with his little brother Eldar, gandma, and mother Mirsada to catch the bus. They caught the bus and they saw their father Muris helping people to get their things on the bus. Then the other soldiers took him away and the bus were off to the airport to catch the planeto leave Sarajevo. They waited, waited and finally they heard a noise and then they saw the plane. The pilot said only 40 people on the plane, and everybody were unhappy. But suddenly his mother Mirsada told the pilot we can all fit in the plane we don't have any luggages and then the the pilot let them in. They left Sarajevo with sad faces. Through out the story they alwayshad to live in a apartment or a hotel. hey travel a lot from here to there. But they finally got into Austria and they were hoping that Muris will come back.
Well did he???
I reckon this is a great story for young adults 11-15. It is a true story so I sugges you read it, its kind of sad though.

Review on no Gun for Asmir
Author Chrisobel Mattingley
No gun for Asmir is a true story. It is about a family who become refugees. They must leave their home in Sarajevo because of war. They travel in crowded buses, cramped plane and over crowded cars to get to safety. In their travels they must fight worries about family. They must fight for their beliefs and most of all they must stay hopeful.
Asmir is a young Muslim boy who lived with his mother, father and brother. But when the war starts he is torn from his father and his home. So he must help his mother and change from a boy to a man.
My overall opinion of the story is that it is a very sad and touching story. It sucks you in and shows you what happened to this unfortunate family in their travels. But it is a little boring in that a few parts could have been cut out. The best age group for this story is probably 15-90 year olds my reason for this is I thought it was a little boring and I'm 11 years old.

My opinion about this book is that it is really i mean REALLY boring. It is about this boy who lives in Sarajevo and has to endure the pain of the war. If you're asking why I read this it is because we had to do a book report on it. It is SO boring! Trust me, you NEVER want to read this book!
