Editorial Reviews

New City

In an era when ear-splitting, fuzzy guitars are commonplace and bland, Hum Machine rocks loud and clear."

Product Description

NO JOY IN MUDVILLE still slams hard, but with a newfound grace and beauty not nearly as evident on HUM MACHINE’s previous efforts. The added emphasis on melodic songwriting makes NO JOY IN MUDVILLE the most accessible effort yet from a band already consistently acclaimed for its commercial sensibilities.

Co-produced by the band and Wendy Schneider at Smart Studios in Madison, NO JOY IN MUDVILLE was mixed by Mike Zirkel (Garbage, Everclear, HBO’s “Reverb”) and engineered by Mark Haines (Son Volt, Freedy Johnston, Hey Mercedes). Its title was borrowed from the classic American poem, “Casey at the Bat,” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, because its essence has been a recurring theme that came into play again while HUM MACHINE worked on the new album.

“Casey is what everybody hates about themselves,” says guitarist Eric Geving, HUM MACHINE’s principal songwriter. “That’s why there’s no joy there. NO JOY IN MUDVILLE is about movies and cars, love and death, porno films and drinking, and people you love to hate and hate to love. The stores are all little vignettes of a passing -- whatever that might be -- with no remorse and no regrets.”
