5.0 out of 5 stars purple ivy shadows disciple from D.C., January 6, 2000

I have played this album for several years now, and keep going back to it to receive more "sustance"... I can't wait to get the new one and I've been waiting a long time for its release. This band is also wonderful in live performance. When they tour to support their new album, please go see them.

5.0 out of 5 stars dreamy, beautiful tunes... i recommend this!, September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: No Less the Trees Than the Stars (Audio CD)
do you miss the "old" r.e.m.? Do you like excellently tuned music with memorable lyrics? Then do not hesitate to buy this cd! From the catchy "pawtucket" and "until I saw the fish" to the dreamy ballads "blue mtn." and "stairs" to the country-esque landscape of "no health" and "sustance"... this cd never fails to deliver. As a providence native, and a follower of this band, I can safely say that they are one of the true gems of our 'lil scene. A must hear for anyone who is fed up with the same-old-stuff-format forced fed tothe masses by contemporary radio markets. Just lie back and dream along with Chris and the rest of the P.I.Shadows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong, compelling debut, May 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: No Less the Trees Than the Stars (Audio CD)
Songs on this disc range from the kind of catchy ear-grabbers that stick with you from a first listen--like the opener, "Pawtucket"--to the atmospheric, trance-like closer, "A Space is Needed." But it is the longer, more complexly-structured songs like "Dancefloor's Shiny Under Junky" and "Roadwise Blood" that, on repeated listenings, reveal themselves & unfold pleasantly. Lyrics tend toward the abstract, playing with puns and rhymes, more intent on creating image collages than narrative. I would compare the band, in certain respects, to very early R.E.M.--while not exactly virtuoso musicians, they demonstrate a keen ear for melody and can evoke moods & emotions with a kind of simple grace that is refreshing. A very strong debut that you'll find yourself replaying many times.
