5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the download
Fred Anderson's debut novel No Limit is a fun and fast read that will remind you of a great James Patterson (the early years) with just enough touches of Stephen King to keep it even more interesting. The action is fast-paced and left this reader wishing occasionally for the ability to hit pause - it is definitely a page-turner.

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of action
I'm really having trouble putting my thoughts together for this review. On the one hand, there is A LOT of action (which I'm a huge fan of) and the writing is high-quality. On the other hand, I just couldn't lose myself in this book like I wanted to.

I'm not sure I'm a fan of all the POVs given and there were several times POV jumps pulled me out of the story...

The action is fast-paced and left this reader wishing occasionally for the ability to hit pause - it is definitely a page-turner.

The story follows Matt Freeman, a professional poker player, who is consumed with the loss of his son when he receives a mysterious phone call - from his son. Matt's devastating loss and subsequent chase for the truth leads the reader on a path that often surprises and leaves more questions than it answers.

Definitely worth the download!

No Limit was a fun, quick read in one of my favorite fiction categories: Action-Adventure. If you like reading about Lee Child's Jack Reacher or liked watching Bruce Willis protect his family (and the cities of New York and LA) in the Die Hard movie franchise, you'll love No Limit. Matt Freeman is an up and coming poker player who wins a jackpot only to lose his whole life when his son, who he was supposed to be watching, is killed in an accidental house fire. A year later, Matt is struggling to cope with the grief of losing both his son and his estranged wife without the numbing pull of alcohol. When his phone rings just after midnight, Matt is sure another tragedy awaits. When he answers the phone, the voice on the other line stops his heart. "Daddy?"

The remainder of the tale is one of a Father desperate to redeem himself and protect his family at all costs, despite the seemingly limitless resources of his enemies. Like Bruce Willis' John McClane or Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Matt's ability to continue fighting through repeated physical injury requires a healthy suspension of disbelief. What is realistic, however, is Matt's emotional humanity and humility throughout the ordeal. Freeman is never confident that he can overcome and shows the reader the considerable and justifiable fear he has for his own life, or worse, his inability to protect his son yet again.

The action draws you in, and the plot twists keep the narrative from being too predictable. If you are a long-time reader of Fred or his wife Robyn's blogs, you will also be tickled with the "easter eggs" hidden throughout the book.

This is a great read and definitely worth more than the price of admission!

I had a hard time putting this book down and had to stay up until about 1:30 this morning to finish it and then I justed wanted more. Fred's first book is fast paced and reminded me very much of one of my favorite authors, Dean Koontz. If you like Koontz, you'll love No Limit! Buy it now!

I've been reading Fred for quite a while and I love all of his books. He has a way of taking me right into the action and the characters are always very believable. I look forward to many more books by Fred.

I loved this book! For Fred Anderson's first published book I was beyond impressed. The action never stopped and the twists were well thought out. For me to actually cheer out loud for a character is unheard of and I was truly invested after the first couple chapters. I would highly recommend this book and for 99 cents it's a steal! I'm definitely watching for future books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-stop action!, April 17, 2011

Matthew Reilly meets Michael Crichton. Techno-medical thriller with lots of action built around a genetic engineering plot. One of the best kindle books I've read. Skilfully and professionally written with enough detail to be three dimensional but not so much to be boring.

Thoroughly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars One Hell of a Ride!, April 10, 2011
This review is from: No Limit (Kindle Edition)
Fred Anderson's debut novel NO LIMIT harkens back to the works of Dean Koontz with its blend of high technology, very humanistic drama, and some surprising chills thrown in for good measure. Matt Freeman's devastating loss shatters his marriage, and in response he turns to the mind-numbing comfort of alcohol as he ekes out a rather unremarkable existence in Las Vegas, Nevada. But one late-night phone call turns his world on its head, and he finds himself confronting a host of villains who are responsible for the loss of his thought-to-be-deceased son. But the stakes are raised even higher when Freeman finds there are things even more lethal than his human adversaries...

NO LIMIT is a rollercoaster ride that is full of ups and downs. If high-octane adventure and intelligent, thought-provoking drama is your cup of tea, then pick up this .99 marvel right away! Guaranteed not to disappoint.

I received a Kindle for my birthday this year and decided that the first book I would buy and read would be No Limit by Fred Anderson. Why not something more well known? Well, I'm a fan of the blog [...] and this book was written by the blogger's husband. She'd mentioned it and the plot description instantly hooked me. The book isn't available in any other format besides Kindle, at the moment, as Fred has yet to be discovered by a publisher. Thus I feel rather privileged to be allowed to read this novel before it becomes the New York Times bestseller it's destined to become.

I would describe this book as a mix of Harlan Coben meets Dean Koontz. The book jumps right into the action and never really lets go til the end. I'm surprised I didn't break my Kindle buttons as I feverishly mashed "next page" over and over again. Loved the characters, loved the plot... am hoping that the character of KhaosJunky the computer hacker will make an appearance in Mr. Anderson's future books as I developed quite the soft spot for him. And considering this book is, essentially, "self-published", it's amazingly well-edited; I stumbled across maybe 3 typos throughout the whole book. I sometimes find more than that in the first CHAPTER of a mainstream novel.

My one complaint about the book is one that doesn't even merit a drop in rating -- that is Dr. Davenport's character. There was so much focus on his weight in the beginning of the book for no discernible reason. It's a pet peeve of mine when overweight people are portrayed as villains, or lazy, or greedy... I realize that those traits probably fit the description of many overweight persons... but so do they also describe many people of normal weight as well. So to have a character be overweight for no reason AND to have so much focus on the fact that Dr. Davenport is overweight... well, it was just annoying. But it wasn't so annoying as to distract me from my thorough enjoyment of the novel. My only other complaint is the fact that this book isn't in any other form besides Kindle... how in the world am I supposed to give copies to friends to enjoy??? Oh, all right, I suppose I can't blame the author on that one ;).

In any case, if you don't have a Kindle, I highly recommend downloading the Kindle app for your computer or iPhone and reading No Limit by Fred Anderson -- it's the perfect summer "beach read"

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Thrilling - A Great Read, May 12, 2010
By
This review is from: No Limit (Kindle Edition)
"No Limit" is a solid first novel by author Fred Anderson, one which is well-written, smooth, and fast paced as it builds to a big ending that doesn't cheat the reader.
Full of suspense, interesting characters and enough twists and turns to keep the pages turning and make the time fly. I started reading No Limit last night. I finished today, ignoring family, friends, and chores, in the process. The only disappointing part was when I had to finish it. I highly recommend "No Limit", and this up and coming new author, Fred Anderson. This one has the markings of a Best Seller!
