Book Description

September 30, 2004 4 and upP and up
Izzie wasn't very tall for seven. Not even for six. Or five. Even if she stood on her tippy, tippy toes, her pony tail, just reached the top of Daddy's chair." So begins the tale of the little girl who believes that by eating lots of cupcakes, she will get tall, maybe even tall enough to be a ballerina. Too many cupcakes cause a tummy ache and the trouble starts. Living gluten-free isn't a piece of cake until Izzie learns that being special is really what makes you tall. Beautifully illustrated and with a foreword by Alessio Fasano, M.D., Director of the Center for Celiac Research, Lowell's charming and emotionally honest tale, complete with resources and a real-life happy ending in the form of a gluten- and lactose-free cupcake recipe from Whole Foods Market Gluten-Free Bakehouse chef Lee Tobin, will live in the hearts of parents and children for generations to come. 5.0 out of 5 stars This book made the tears go away!, January 3, 2009

This review is from: No More Cupcakes & Tummy Aches (Paperback)
Our 9 year old duaghter was recently diagnosed with Celiac's Disease and although we were all relieved to have her tummy aches (and the countless canker sores) gone she's had an extremely hard time dealing with the changes we've had to make.
This book has been a huge help since our daughter was able to identify with the character in the book and she even decided to share the book with her class (but they skipped the bathroom part)so that they can also understand why she couln't eat the same foods they were able to eat and also why she grew 1 1/2 inches in 2 months after the gluten was removed from her diet!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for young children and their friends, July 29, 2008
This review is from: No More Cupcakes & Tummy Aches (Paperback)
My son was diagnosed with Celiac's at 18 months. We received this book as a gift. It was a great way to help my son understand what was going on with the change in his diet and why. He was able to take this book to daycare and read it with his class. This helped his friends, teachers, and other caregivers better understand what having Celiac's disease means in day to day life. It was wonderful to have a main character be just like him, unable to eat what everyone else was eating. My son is now 6 (and doing GREAT) and has a friend who was just diagnosed. We are giving her this book as a gift. We hope this book helps her as it much as it did us. The only way it could be better was if there was a "boy" version to choose since my son has no interest in being a ballerina (:
