Book Description

February 19, 2010

Disregarding the false notion that writing instruction in the primary grades needs to be mostly teacher directed, Jennifer Jacobson shows teachers how to develop a primary writer's workshop that helps nurture independent, engaged writers. No More "I'm Done!" demonstrates how to create a more productive, engaging, and rewarding writer's workshop. Jennifer guides teachers from creating a supportive classroom environment through establishing effective routines; shows teachers how to set up a writer's workshop; and provides an entire year of developmentally appropriate mini-lessons that build confidence and, ultimately, independence.

From getting rid of those dreaded words ("I'm done!") to "Quiet Ten" to an outline of minilessons for the entire year, Jennifer Jacobson's guidance is so practical. If you have doubted you could run a writer's workshop in your classroom, get this book. Let _No More "I'm Done!"_ do for your writing workshop what _Daily 5_ did for your reading workshop.

5.0 out of 5 stars The word needs to get out about this book! August 8, 2010
Format:Paperback
I feel strongly that the word needs to get out about this book because it deserves more notice than it seems to be getting. The previous reviewer who likened it to the Daily 5-for-writing book was spot on. They are similar in that they both provide a framework to help you successfully manage reading/writing workshop.

The management tips are what really set this book apart from the other books. Sometimes it's the little things that can make all the difference. The book is full of those "little things" like the Quiet 10, a structure for conducting an efficient conference, what to do if kids come up to talk to you in the middle of a conference, what to do with all those "sloppy copies" at the end of the month, easy ways for kids to edit their work (spider legs and surgery!)... all this AND tons of mini-lessons to get you started.

You can use the ideas in this book whether you use Lucy Calkins, 6-traits, or have no writing program at all. I can't wait to get started on the school year so I can start writers workshop. It's been a long time since I've felt this way about writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Have and not just for primary aged students... August 22, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a former 4th and 5th grade teacher who is moving to 1st grade this year. I picked up this book after reading its fabulous reviews. I can't say enough about how essential this book is for all elementary teachers. It is practical and provides so many excellent ideas on how to run writer's workshop. If I move to upper elementary again I would use most of the ideas Jacobson suggests in this book to encourage independent writers. A quick-read and a well written, you won't be able to put this book down. It will have stickies from cover to cover. Enjoy!
