Book Description
This is a direct blog-to-ebook conversion of the popular No More Harvard Debt blog found at nomoreharvarddebt.com and featured on CNN Money, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, The Huffington Post, Yahoo! Finance, The Dave Ramsey Show, and countless other media outlets. This book chronicles a Harvard graduate's self-imposed mission to seek financial freedom by paying down his oppressive $90k of student debt in ten months instead of 15 years. With a mortgage, two cars, a motorcycle, and monthly entertainment expenses of $1,300, he doesn't have the slightest clue how he'll maintain his standard of living and pay off his student loans early with an after-tax salary of $74k, but he's willing to give it a shot and share the adventure with readers along the way.
"His blog is, at times, introspective, witty, and sincere, often
inspirational. But what allows Mihalic to maintain this entertaining and often
addictive narrative of what he calls "the walk to debt freedom" was
his extreme goal."-Fortune
"His story is touching a nerve at a time when young Americans
are more indebted than ever." -The Wall Street Journal
"I just finished reading your
blog while sitting at work and honestly I've never been more motivated to try
and get my life back together and fix the financial train wreck I've spent my
self into."
-Shawn
"Thanks for the inspiration.
It's Monday 8:30am. Today is the day I get my finances back in order."
-Christiaan "I have a daughter in college
who is incurring student loan debt as we speak. I think I am going to assign
your blog as her summer reading project." -Cathy "Thank you for making me
realize that paying all of my loans off quickly is an attainable goal. Thank
you for documenting it so that I don't feel as in the dark about the whole
process. And, thank you for being so brutally honest which has made me really
re-focus my attention on getting rid of this burden as quickly as
possible." -Natasha "This was a wake-up call
for me." -Chelsae "I
appreciate the complete transperancy on the finances and the tactical
transperancy on the personal life. As much as I love the grit and determination
it must have taken to pay off that debt, I found myself wondering why I like
reading your entries so much. Simply put, it is the honesty. In today's
everyday hustle, it is refreshing." -Gary

I stumbled upon Mike's blog while searching for some advice on paying off my student loans. I read a few posts and found that he had not only written a full book (better than sitting scrolling through a blog) and it was free with my amazon prime account (double bonus).
I cannot say enough good things about this book, but I will try to outline the highlights
1. If you are a numbers person, then this is a great book. Mike charts and plots out how much he'll need to earn over the ten months to pay off his debt. There is enough analysis that I was starting to understand it! Anyways, he is very good about showing concrete numbers for his progress, which gives a great graphical depiction of how it's coming along.
2. If you aren't a numbers person, this book is great. Mike did a great job of not just throwing numbers in your face, he always gives real examples of what he's doing and how it's not only paying his debt off, but how it's affecting his life.
3. The book is a fun read. I think because it was written as he went along, instead of after the fact, that it has a good flow to it, and it comes off as very genuine.
4. Unlike some financial advisers, Mike makes this goal seem doable for the common person. He's a likeable guy and so, you become sucked into the book quickly and you want him to succeed as if you were him.
"No more Harvard debt" is a wonderful and inspiring book. I often wonder how in the world do people ever pay off their enormous student loans. This book provides a great tool to figuring out your own path to financial freedom.
Think back to your new year's resolution, now make that goal even more unrealistic, and then be crazy enough to set out on a mission to do it, actually STICK to it, and document the journey daily.
There are soooo many lessons in this book, from goal setting, tracking the goal regularly, and making adjustments as necessary, to delayed gratification and overcoming social pressures. Anyone who has set a goal and followed through with it knows how long TEN months is to stick to it AND stay on track, specially when that goal does not fit into ones regular day-to-day life style and drastic measures have to be made. Definitely not an easy task.
This book is not just for those who want to pay off student loans or save money, but for anyone who has set their mind on any goal they want to successfully achieve. Mihalic does a absolutely phenomenal job at staying transparent throughout the book. His ambition is addicting, his discipline inspiring. To be able to be a witness to Mihalic's journey of pursuing and successfully achieving his goal is an incredible experience. Highly recommended!
