5.0 out of 5 stars This was a great mystery, appropriate for kids of all ages!
I enjoyed this book very much. I like stories where there is a hint of magic mixed in with realism. The subject matter was good: about a boy's stolen bike. Sometimes I don't like to see kids' books with murder and mayhem in them. Yet even though it was purely kids' subject matter, the kid characters were interesting and well rounded, the adults believable, and the story...

4.0 out of 5 stars More of Avi's magic, September 17, 2004
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
Avi has come a long way, baby. Today he has produced countless picture books, middle reader books, and young adult books for masses of children everywhere. He's won Newbery Honors, a Newbery Award, and copious amounts of praise and veneration. And to think it all started with a little early reader book called "No More Magic". Originally written in 1975, the book has all the spunk and catchy writing you'd expect in an Avi creation. It won a Special Award from the Mystery Writers of America when it was first published and remains a beloved book by many to this day. If you've a kid who loves mystery books but has tired of Cam Jansen, Encyclopedia Brown, or Chet Gecko and wants to try something a little different, "No More Magic" may be right up their alley.

It all begins with a bike. Chris's bike. Which is to say, the disappearance of Chris's bike. A special kind of creation, Chris bought the green colored contraption from a nearby junk yard once and has loved it ever since. Unfortunately, it appears that he left it out on Halloween night and it has somehow disappeared. His father, a librarian, advises Chris to, "get the questions right before you get the answers wrong". So begins Chris's attempts to solve a particularly engrossing mystery. Before he knows it he's tracking down a warlock, befriending a girl in a Druid coat, accusing his best friend of involvement, and seeing his bike fly high past the moon. Though his parents are telling him there's no such thing as magic, Chris is setting out to prove them wrong. And to get his bike back too.

Though originally written in 1975, the book has held up exceedingly well. This might be partly because so much of what it has to say has remained so timeless. With the resurgence of interest in super heroes, even the sections talking about Batman and the Green Lantern still work (or they do if your child watches the Cartoon Network's new "Justice League" show). The only datable elements that remain are prices. A new bike, we are informed, usually costs $20. And no one, I guess, wears a helmet while riding one. Yet beyond that, the book is as fresh as a daisy. The characters are realistic and interesting. The mystery fresh and fascinating. Avi has set himself up with the monumentally difficult task of making the book realistic to both kids that do believe in magic and kids who don't. If your child wants to believe that something supernatural is behind the mysteries presented in "No More Magic", it's not a problem. If, on the other hand, they don't, it's also not a problem. This book may well be the perfect answer to those parents that disapprove of magic in children's books, yet have children who yearn to read about other realities. It could satisfy them both.

The book's an early reader, best for those kids that have started chapter books and want something on the level with "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing". I think they'll like it. It's a fabulous autumnal book as well, so definitely consider recommending it around Halloween time. Though it was the first thing he wrote, Avi knew what he was doing with "No More Magic" right from the start. An inauspicious debut by a now well known and well respected writer. Great reading for all.

Book Review for Avi's, No More Magic

No More Magic, by Avi, it is about a boy, age 11, named Chris and his friends Eddie and Muffin. In the book Chris's bike gets stolen from him and Muffin's costume gets stolen from her. They think the bike was stolen from Chris's house. Chris and his friends believe the bike was stolen by the junkyard owner, Mr. Bullen (who they think is a warlock) because it had magic. They are convinced of this because an old man named Mr. Podler, who likes to drink, told them that he saw a warlock riding the bike on Halloween.

My favorite scene in the book was when they got the bike out of the water. I liked the scene because it was funny to see little kids pull a bike out of the water. I think that was an important scene in the book because Chris and his friends got the bike back. This was the first step in helping them solve the mystery.

I would recommend this book to students in the 6th grade. I think this book is exciting, interesting and keeps you thinking. However, it was also boring at times. I give this book 2 stars.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
Do you like books about magic or mystery? If you do so then this is a good book for you. This book is about a boy named Chris and his best friend Eddie. Chris and Eddie celebrate Halloween together. Chris and Eddie's costumes are of super heroes. They both rode their bikes and went down town. When they got to town Chris got distracted for a moment and somebody stole his bike. Who stole Chris's bike? You will have to read the book to find out.
This story took place in Massachusetts in1999. The genre of the book is realistic fiction. The author didn't use any flashbacks. I recommend you this book if you like magic because this is a great book about it. I connect this book to Flying Solo because is also realistic fiction. The author used some similes like: the sky is like the ocean. I really liked the style of the author. The things he did well were how he used dialogue and similes.
I really liked this book and you should read it because is a great book. I recommend you this book because is mysterious and interesting. You should really read it!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
A great mystery, and a winner of the Mystery Writers of America presents the fiction novel *No More Magic.* It starts as a mystery when Chris's green bike magically disappears on Halloween night. Its up to him to find out who stole his bike and where it is? Their left with few clues that do not make sense, but when chris sees someone riding his bike in the sky he believes its magic. "is it magic?" "Who stole the bike?" will he figure all this out when he's left with only few people that believe him. This is for you to find out.
I think Avi wrote this book to give kids confidence and to let them now that you have got to find the facts before you accuse. This book is a good recommendation for older elementary students and middle school students This is a great book for both girls and boys. It tells you to think what you want to think when no one else in the world believes you. No More magic is a great book with an awesome story.

4.0 out of 5 stars No More Magic - Mrs. Mc cormicks 6th grade class, October 4, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
This Book is fiction. It's about a kid name chris that was at his house on Halloween. On Halloween night some one just took his bike. The bike was stolen from his friend's house. Chris began looking for his bike inside the junkyard. Then after he looked there, he went to the store and there was a new bike and it looked just like his bike. When he saw it, he wanted to get that bike from the store. His mom agreed to buy the bike but he decided he didn't want it. You are going to be surprised when you find out who stole the bike. This book is good, but I didn't understand some of the words in book. I do agree that he is a good writer and I liked the book. In the beginning of this book, I didn't think it would be very good, but as I read more, it started to get better. As I read more, it made more sense. I did get lost on parts. Overall, I liked it.

4.0 out of 5 stars No More Magic - Mrs.McCormick's 6th grade class, October 4, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
This book is fiction. The book is about this kid named Chris. He gets his bike stolen on Halloween night, from his friend's house. His friend's name is Eddie. Chris meets and makes a new friend named Muffin. Chris and Muffin were looking for Chris's bike and Muffin's costume, that also got stolen. It was stolen from the halloween parade and his costome had gotten first place. They found the stolen items at Mr. Bullen's store. Mr.Bullen sells bikes. Although they found them, they continued to look for more clues. When they found out who stole the stuff, it totally surprised me on who did it. The book is interesting because it's hard to find clues who stole the stuff. I think AVI is a good writer. You will get into the book. I also read books by R.L. Stine. AVI and R.L. Stine are way different because R.L. Stine writes horror books. Although I liked the book, I liked it more in the beginning because toward the middle I sort of felt lost. I liked it though, because it is the first book that got me confused. I had to really pay attention.

I recommend you this book if you like magic because this is a great book about magic. I connect this genre to realistic fiction, because is also fiction but in realistic fiction the story could be real.
I connect this book to the Narnia collection, because is also about magic. The author used some metaphors like: the sky is like the ocean. The author didn't changed his style of language he just used English. I felt really happy that Chris founded his bike.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Magic (Paperback)
This book is a fiction book. On Halloween Chris's bike got stolen after he went trick or treating. The next day he started to investigate and thought Eddie stole his bike because he said he was going to be at the Halloween parade, but he wasn't. To him, this made Eddie a suspect. Chris went to the junk yard to see if he could buy a bike. He got one cheap because his got stolen. That night he saw a warlock riding his bike. The next day he met this girl, Muffin. She didn't have a bike so Chris took her to the junk yard and asked Mr.Bullen to sell a bike to Muffin for a cheap price. Mr Bullen said no at first, but ended up selling her one anyway. The author of this book is AVI. In the beginning, I thought this book was a boring book, but at the end it was good.
