5.0 out of 5 stars Classic
You must be from another dimension if you are comparing this to MC Hammer. This album defines classic, jazzy, socially positive rap. Stop hitting the crack pipe. If you are going to compare it to anything, how about A Tribe Called Quest and KRS One. And Kid 'N Play were pretty good, even Big Daddy Kane gives them the thumbs up. Their cartoons, movies, comic books,...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of Two Legends
I'll admit I'm not crazy about the entire album - in fact I'm not crazy about most albums that were released between '87 and '89 because the songs (other than the hit singles) sound dated. But since Gang Starr is one of the greatest groups in hip hop history, this album should be in your hip hop library. "Manifest" - both the original and the remix (the sped up version)...

Their cartoons, movies, comic books, etc. have no bearing on the albums. They are classic stuff. Like 3rd Bass, they still get hated on by people who have no clue. And almost every hip hop act back then had dancers. That was a definant part of the culture before gangsta rap took over and slightly fudged up things. Anyways, this album is perfection. Guru drops knowledge with crazy skill over some very funky Priemo beats utilizing classic samples. A hip hop album like this will never be made again, don't pass it up. I put it right up there along side Step Into the Arena and Daily Operation. Don't sleep, this is not a 3 star album!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars people need a history lesson, April 27, 2004

The 2001 release date on here is misleading to the kid who said Gangstarr was trying to hard to resurrect the old school- That's the rerelease date. This was originally dropped in 1989, and if I'm not mistaken it was their debut record (full clip-a decade of Gangstarr was released in 99; ten years back would make this the first album). This album was ahead of it's time for 89, and if you can't see the realness in old school beats, then you shouldn't be listening to hip hop. This album is where it's at for those that don't know- James Brown funk, Premiere breaks, and the same Guru that real heads are down with. Check this release (I'm hearin it right now for the first time, the ish is dope!)

5.0 out of 5 stars "The begining of a new Hip-Hop legacy"!, September 4, 2005
This review is from: No More Mr Nice Guy (Audio CD)
The name GANG-STARR is synonimous with Hip-Hop any where in the world you might go. In 1989, a Bean Town born/B'klyn blessed MC "manifested" over a dope DJ Premier track, some funky rhymes with a trademark voice. This would mark the begining of a new Hip-Hop dynasty that's still in full effect to this day. GANG-STARR , through out the years, has put out classic after classic after classic! And this is their first one. Expect nothing less than banging beats and an ill flow from this incredible duo. This CD edit. contains extra tracks not found on the original '89 pressing on wax and cassette. This is 100% grass-roots Hip-Hop for your enjoyment. No ignorant thug, BS, Rims, platinum crap. Just plain ol' good Hip-Hop for your ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated & Forgotten Classic, July 23, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: No More Mr Nice Guy (Audio CD)
This is where Guru and Premier's legacy began. This is a demonstration Gang Starr finding their sound and formulating their well respected chemistry. The jazz sound on this album would eventually pass on through their next two classic albums. This is a must have for alternative hip hops fans and those who are just beginning to discover Gang Starr's consistent and masterful collection of music. Don't sleep on one of hip hop's best duos.

4.0 out of 5 stars smooth and jazzy compilation, March 21, 2000

this album is well made and has been used as sort of a blueprint for the the infusion of rap and jazz (tribe called quest, etc). filled to the brim with creativity, guru and premiere debut themselves with this album. original and smooth, this record has a tendency to stay in one's "rotation" for a longer duration than alot of other great old rap albums(thus hopefully keeping puffy and eminem out of the rotation). if you're a fan of good old east coast rap, you should definitely check out this funky record. guru sounds smooth, rhymes are to the point and premiere is (needless to say) one of the greatest djs of all time. check this album out if it's not already in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Versatility at it's best, October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: No More Mr Nice Guy (Audio CD)
Although gangstar has been doing this for eons this album may sound a bit different from the masterminded monotone and godlike scratches and samples from the Guru and Premier-duo. But If you own Moment of Truth(98) Guru lets you know that they have evolved with the times and the ol' school rap contained in this album seems to be going through a transformation in the years that this album was produced. Overall they have evolved and are the best at what they do. Keeping rap real and protected from propaganda and Big Business that alot of rappers tend to live by now a days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Consistency, July 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: No More Mr Nice Guy (Audio CD)
Wow! These guys have been making the same tight music from their first album to now. Unbelievable consistency. Guru and premier are hip hop magicians and it is only after a decade that they are gaining the recognition on their own terms. I could see myself listening to their music well into the next millenium because "It's the message in the song that makes you rock on!".
