The Strange Case of Alice Cooper

Every great production deserves a sequel – even if comes 35-plus years after the original.

In 1975, Alice Cooper joined forces with longtime collaborator and producer Bob Ezrin to record his first solo album Welcome to My Nightmare, a theatrical concept album about the nightmares of a young boy named Steven. Now, he’s followed Steven into adulthood and presents Welcome 2 My ... Read more in Amazon's Alice Cooper Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Great performance April 1, 2012
By lemmy59

Taken from the NMMNG Tour, this is a really good set list. Are there tracks I wish he would have done? Of course. Do we really need another live version of "Poison" or "18"? Not really. But for what it is, this is a fun and worthwhile album. I saw him less than a month after it was recorded and the show was stellar.

The downsides, other than some glaring omissions of other classic songs, are two: First, the sound quality isn't nearly as good as prior live efforts, such as the last live DVD, "Theatre of Death". To me, it sounds like a soundboard recording. The audience is back in the mix, and at certain points some guitars sound more like background playing, rather than being higher in the mix, as a proper Alice show has them. But! Don't let that be a turn-off. It's not bad sounding, it's just not loud enough.

Second, the dreadful version of "Fire" - this is not Alice's cover of the Hendrix classic that he recorded in the 90s. Alice brought Arthur Brown onstage to do his tribute to pyromaniacs. Brown's voice sounds terrible, at best. Thankfully it's the last track on the second CD and easy to skip.

Again, though, this is a killer live album. "Brutal Planet" is heavy and, well, BRUTAL. The extended "Halo of Flies" is done perfectly, and the other tracks sound really good. The band, lead by one of Alice's old cohorts, Steve Hunter, is on top of its collective game. And Alice's voice is rough, as we like it, but much more in tune and listenable than "Theatre of Death", where he seemed to shout everything and lost track of the melody on many tunes. My advice is to buy this immediately.

3.0 out of 5 stars 4 decades later, Vince is still on the job March 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Vincent Damon Furnier...that's "Alice" to you...serves up a two-CD memento from his October 29th, 2011 show at London's Alexandra Place. As you might expect, Alice knows what the fans came for. A little less than half of the 98-minute set, 10 songs, are drawn from the catalog of the original Alice Cooper band. There's one track from the new Welcome 2 My Nightmare, and three from the original Welcome to My Nightmare album. Alice's voice is a little more ragged around the edges than it was in his 70s heyday, ducking the occasional high note here and there, but for the most part it's not an issue. The only song that really falls flat is "Feed My Frankenstein," and that's because the original was so heavily produced and featured the dueling guitars of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, while this one doesn't. Great to hear the song, but the original set the bar so high that it's impossible not to be at least a little disappointed.

The original show aired on U.S. and U.K. television, and was also sold on CD as an "instant live" release, so this isn't "new" to hardcore Alice fans. For everyone else, it's a romp through the hits. Three solid stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best of... June 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This is just another best of tour Alice did for past few years. He just changes the name of the tour and adds different theatrics and songs.
I think the last album tour he did was Brutal Planet. The only new song from "Welcome 2 My Nightmare" is "I'll Bite Your Face Off".
He says he doesn't want to be a revival band. Well that's what he's been doing for the past 12 years. Just w/ a younger band.
The concert sounded good to me but then again I just have a basic stereo.
What I didn't like was the packaging. The CD booklet didn't include any liner notes, pictures or credit. I wouldn't have know Arthur Brown appeared if I didn't read about it earlier on line.
No info of who played in the band but again I know from research on line. It looked like it was thrown together quickly.
It would of been nice to have a DVD. Since it was on TV in the UK it was already recorded. They could of added a DVD w/ the package.
The concert was good and having Arthur Brown sing lead on "Fire" was strange. I know it's his song but least Alice could of sang some verses.
It was just a quick buck by the label and they got mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set March 24, 2012

Alice Cooper always delivers live and this is no exception. Killer set list that flows wonderfully, all key points in Coopers career are touched on which is a real treat for fans as he has a vast library of amazing music. I'm not sure what the other reviewer was expecting, maybe a lip sync or live in studio with band aids!?? Alice does not need it and holds his own with this set. Money well spent, and a great fan treat from the shock rock master.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a nice guy May 15, 2014

Live music seems to be the best when Alice Cooper is singing it. This is the second CD of live music that I've purchased.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you saw the concert tour, get the CDs January 19, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Some have complained the production of the CDs aren't as solid as some of the previous live concert albums. That is clearly true. They aren't. That said, I saw this tour three times, and after purchasing the collection, I'm okay with the quality of the CDs. It's fine enough for me to sing each tune as they come on. And that probably is the definition of a good CD set if I ever heard one. Yeah, I probably won't listen to this collection as much as Theater of Pain or Brutal Planet, but it's not like this CD is going to go collect dust bunnies with the CDs I haven't listened to in the last five years. It's Cooper and it's a tour I saw three times!!! It's going to be a quality addition to my collection and it will hit the rotation plenty enough to make it well worth the purchase. I'm sure it'll remain as my primary car CD for at least another week as well.

Oh, and a neat twist for those who didn't see the tour. During it, of course, School's Out was played. However, it was mixed with a little "Brick in the Wall" as well, and it was cool to hear that live version of School's Out on here. Essentially, I wanted this to hear that version somewhere, to hear Clones live again, to hear I'll Bite Your Face Off live again and The Black Widow. For some reason I really liked how The Black Widow came out in concert during this tour. Love the live version of it on the Welcome 2 My NIghtmare album (a bonus song for many of us), and it's not as nice on this CD, but I still enjoy it. Also, Halo of Flies is included in the mix. So while there are many of the staple songs, there are still some new ones thrown in the mix as well.

It's a good mix of songs.

Oh, and what has been said about the "bonus" song - Fire - is true. It's terrible. The three concerts I went to "Elected" was the last song, and I don't feel like I missed anything not hearing "Fire."
