Book Description

When 44 year-old Ann Pietrangelo is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, all previous assumptions about health, work, and her new romance are up for grabs.

How do you plan for life's second half with a body you've never met before? One precarious step at a time. From the impersonal diagnosis by email to a wedding presided over by a funeral director, this is no tragic tale of woe. Like relapsing/remitting MS itself, the book alternates between the serious (“When I turn toward him, there's a big hole where his right cheek should be.”) and the silly (“The bocce balls don't get out much.”).

This poignant and often humorous story of acceptance and change relies on a basic truth – good health and life are fleeting, but love and humor trump all. Every second matters, a point driven home by yet another life-altering diagnosis.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Pietrangelo shares the highs and lows of living with MS... Her personality shines through in this tale... This book will offer hope, courage and insight to others living with multiple sclerosis, or who know someone with the disease." - Reviewed by Anne B. for Readers Favorite

From the Author

No More Secs! may strike a chord if you've got multiple sclerosis, or love someone who does. Still, it is only my story, not your story, and certainly not THE story of MS. Oh, and it's not all about MS either. Really. That's because life marches on whether we feel up to it or not. Mine sure did and, whether or not I'm ready, it keeps on marching. At its very heart, this is a love story. Romantic love. Love of family. Love of life. If you take a leap of faith and give No More Secs! a read, it's my sincere hope you come away from it on a positive note. Then I'll know I've done good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Person with MS is Much More than her Disease July 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ann Pietrangelo has written a poignant, intelligent and very readable book about her struggles with relapsing/remitting Multiple Sclerosis. As she says , "MS puts me in a category of people who live a double life. One foot in the world of disability, one foot in the world of the able-bodied". With this form of MS she deals with remissions and relapses over and over, never knowing when one or the other will occur.

Ms. Pietrangelo discusses her life, her work, her family and her marriage. She focuses on the fact that she is much more than the sum of her symptoms or the name of her disease. She is a whole person, in love and loved, productive and successful. She has a history of writing for health blogs and she and her husband run a web design company.

Ann's Diagnosis occurred when she was 45 years old, beginning with tingling in her leg and arm. She is lucky to have health care insurance but it is running out as she is on the COBRA plan - the plan that is mandatory for companies to offer employees who leave employment. It is a plan they must pay for themselves and it only lasts for eighteen months. Ann discusses the frustrations of working with insurance companies and physicians along with her fear of what will happen when she is left uninsured.

She discusses the emotions that go along with her illness, especially "the mind games it plays with you. Guilt and self-doubt plague its unwilling hosts, and I'm no exception." Even though she is debilitated by her disease, she continues to feel she should do more, work more hours and be more productive. She finds it hard to accept her limitations with MS. "The thing about relapsing/remitting MS is that your disabilities are ever-changing. You have to learn to adapt to new situations very quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO much better than I expected! December 13, 2012

This book is a must read for anyone diagnosed with MS, or any family member or friend of someone with MS. As I was reading it, I kept thinking, "yep I've felt that way too". It's a funny, down to earth, honest take on what it's like to have MS. Some days are really good and some days are really bad. Her story gives me hope to maintain a normal life despite MS. Thanks Ann for such a great read-I really needed it!

Everyone who has had a disease of some sort to contend with in life should take the time to read this book. Even if you haven't, you need to read it to get a clue as to how spouses really need to dedicate their lives to each other - even in sickness! I'm proud of Ann Pietrangelo as she lets us into her life on a personal level. Even in tough times of life, we should focus on helping others - that's what Ann does! And, yes, I love the cover of the book and the title. You have to read it to learn where the "secs" comes from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor & Grace March 31, 2014
By Megan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I truly enjoyed Ann Pietrangelo's book about life with MS. Living with the disease myself, and swearing that the only way to get through the bad days is to find something to laugh about, it was wonderful to find someone else that feels the same way! Although one of the most frustrating things about this disease is you never know what tomorrow is going to be like, Ann seems to be finding her way through all the dips and hills (and spills) that just happen. It is a well written account of what it is like to have your life take such a drastic turn, by a woman that obviously has a lot of grace and a great sense of humor!
