No Need for Tenchi! (Book 1)

If you are new to the whole Tenchi series, you may have a bit of trouble settling down at first due to a very unfamiliar fantasy setting and a pretty twisty plotline which doesn't really start at the very beginning in this book. But then you'll fall in love with all the spunky, fun-loving characters like the courageous teenaged Tenchi and his five wacky female housemates with their offbeat hairdos like the devilish Ryoko, her "mother" the youthful-looking scientist, Washu; the pretty princess from outer space, Ayeka and her sweet little sister, Sasumi; and the resourceful space police, Mihoshi. Not to mention their charming little rabbit-cat pet, Ryo-oh-ki with the most amazing trick: he could turn into a spaceship in the time of need!

In this story, Tenchi & Co. suddenly encountered Ryoko's wild twin named Minagi who is out for blood! So Tenchi and Ryoko fiercelly battled Minagi and knocked her out, thus causing her to lose her memory. And along comes Yakage who wants to test Tenchi's legendary sword and thus he made off with the lovely Ayeka in the very end. But better read all about it to find out! Very cute and funny with such skillful drawings and truly endearing characters!

If the answer is more Tenchi madness, this is what you'll get. I will admit that was was leery of any translation by Viz, but those suspiscions were put to rest after the first few pages. I managed to find a Japanese copy and worked out the translations on my own and was pleasantly surprised to find that the English version is farly close to the Japanese. I liked the direction the author was going with the series and look forward to more. If you are as big of a Tenchi otaku as I am, then you cannot pass this up. Go, buy it now! shoo shoo

I fell in love with the anime series and thought the manga would be a big rehash of the plot, but it's not!! The story is original, the art is even cooler than the animation sometimes, and it's great to get in the graphic novel form!

WOW it even tells you what happened before the book,the plot is Minagi{Ryoko's double}comes and gets ammnesia,she leaves and the the villian YAKAGE comes and want tenchi's sword and kiddnapts Aeka ......but read to find the conclusion.If you like Tenchi and anime you'll love this!!

Well, you're definitely going to be confused if you've never seen this series' anime version (it used to air on Cartoon Network), but it's still worth checking out even if you haven't. I am a huge fan of the Tenchi franchise but I was a bit disappointed with this manga because the storyline was different from the anime (the original 13 episodes, otherwise known as the OVA) I love so much, but it does have its good points: the artwork is among the best I've ever seen for its genre and the content is funny and interesting. (or at least to me it was)

Unfortunately, I was also disappointed to find out that it had been "flopped" and was much bigger in size than the original volume, not to mention the full-color inserts had not been kept in, but I was kind of expecting that.
Anyways, I really enjoyed it nonetheless and highly recommend it, although I personally think the anime is better.
It was great to see this series in manga format, though.

The quality of this Manga is amazing--the art, the inking, everything-- and it helps that Tenchi Muyo is the best Anime/Manga ever. The only problem I had with it was a few annoying translations like having the Wings of the Lighthawk be the Lightning Eagle Wings... it even calls them Lighthawk Wings on the back.... but thats certainly no big deal.

This book starts with what I think is a many page explanation of everything that's happened before the events of the beginning of this volume. Since this is the first volume, as far as I know, I guess that means that this is an explanation of things that happened in the series. I've never seen any of the series, something which I think crippled my enjoyment of this book. The explanation at the beginning seemed like it should have helped, but all it did was confuse me more. I had a hard time keeping track of who all the characters were, what they were, and why they were there. The rest of the book didn't explain that all for me either. I spent a lot of time vaguely interested, but mostly confused. So, if you've never heard of this before or you've never seen the series, then this is probably not the book for you.

I LOVE this series, and these comics are great. Funny, action-packed, and great story lines! Why the 4 stars? Ah, because some of this material IS NOT for kids. I'm upset to say that, because I know younger kids, (like 8) like this series, and they pick up the book to find a little nudity and swearing. Same with the videos-Parental advisor elert! The comics are great, but to watch the series- see it on TV!

I ordered the first couple of these graphic novels because I was fond of the Tenchi Muyo! OVA series. The comic picks up where the OVA left off (so, you might want to watch the OVA before you read them).

While some of the material may not be suitable for young children, it is very entertaining. Hitoshi Okuda strikes a perfect balance between action and humor. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Sometimes the manga has a few explanations that the OVA doesn't have. It's worth checking out if you can find it in a local bookstore, I found out about my manga when I looked at the Graphic Novels section of my Borders. Sometimes I might say that the manga is better, but it's sometimes very complicated, and it doesn't explain anything that wasn't in the anime, so it's bad to start out with the manga first.
