I have never written a review here before, but Eric Comstock has accomplished something so special with his CD "No One Knows" that I wanted other people who love jazz-inflected singing and solid musicianship to know what a find it is. Comstock's taste in tunes is impeccable and he has combined some well-known standards with more than a few surprising gems that deserve a wider audience. He knows his way around a lyric and his understated vocals display an unerring truthfulness that on more than one occasion reveals unexpected emotional depths in the material. (The title track is the first-ever recording of a Strayhorn rarity that sets an extremely high bar for all future versions.) The arrangements by Comstock and Tedd Firth are smart, swinging, and polished. And the all-star band that includes Frank Wess, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Reed, and Matt Wilson rises to every occasion to turn in tight ensemble work and several killer solos. Guys of this caliber don't need the gig. You get the sense that the whole project is a labor of love from start to finish for everyone involved.
