Amazon.com Review

Cate Archer, the mod secret agent with the groovy clothes, deadly aim, and mysterious past, debuts on the PlayStation2 in No One Lives Forever, a port of the popular PC game. With a nod to Austin Powers camp, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s mock earnestness, and the 007 movies' sophisticated flair, No One Lives Forever is a clever spy spoof with a sly sense of humor and compelling action-adventure gameplay. And despite its often sloppy camera and frustrating save system, it's an enjoyable first-person shooter.

Ms. Archer--"exceedingly competent, fiercely intelligent, and stunningly attractive"--is an operative for UNITY, a counterterrorist organization made up of stuffy British guys who wittily mock your qualifications during briefings. Given that the game takes place in the late '60s, you, as Agent Archer, have to endure your share of snarky, sexist putdowns from your UNITY colleagues, particularly in the early going, as you're an untested operative working difficult missions usually reserved for veteran professionals.

The levels are much slower-paced than in usual first-person shooters (though equally enjoyable), as you depend on your silencer and soft-treading (but stylish) shoes in outwitting your foes. The stealthier you are, the more likely you'll progress to the next level (although nothing beats a good bull rush on occasion). Fortunately, all this creeping past security cameras gives you ample time to eavesdrop on the entertaining conversations of guards and bystanders--one of the highlights of the game. The cutscenes aren't quite as good--some are extremely dry and long, and the graphics are somewhat uninspired--but the music is ideal, striking the perfect balance between spy-movie intense and airily clichéd. And like all good spies, Archer has plenty of gadgetry at her disposal, such as a lock-pick barrette, lipstick explosives, and, later, a robotic poodle.

The game's biggest shortfalls are its poorly designed save system, average graphic detail (this is a next-gen console, after all), and jumpy camera. Players can only save the game between levels, meaning you'll likely have to replay certain levels several times to reach the next save point. If the levels were more dynamic (i.e., the dialogue was different each time through), this wouldn't be a big deal, but the game's script and voice acting are only fun the first couple of times. By the 10th run-through, they're beyond stale. The graphics are solid, but compared to some of the other games currently on the market for PS2, they're nothing special. In addition, the camera suffers from some instability--if you back into a wall while avoiding gunfire, the camera often spins you around to face the wall, making you an easy target for sharpshooting guards.

However, it's still a clever title with a great plot. If compelling gameplay is your thing, No One Lives Forever is a solid addition to the first-person-shooter library, especially for fans looking for an alternative to intense action games. If you'd rather have a game that takes advantage of the processing power of PS2, however, keep looking. --Rivers Janssen

Pros:

  • Never takes itself too seriously
  • Stealthy gameplay puts the "secret" in secret agent
  • Music fits the atmosphere perfectly
  • Clever level design
Cons:
  • Graphics are only average
  • Frustrating save system
  • Jumpy camera isn't always reliable

5.0 out of 5 stars The best first-person shooter on any console, March 22, 2002

This review is from: No One Lives Forever (Video Game)
Put simply, this game rocks. It's funny, it's challenging, and most importantly, it's... fun! You play as Cate Archer, an ex-thief turned operative when she steals the watch of a spy who gives her a bright future in light of her talents. The graphics of this game rival those of MGS2 and DMC, and maybe even better. The main reason for this is the texturing and the colorful locales that this game is set in. I have played the PC version, and I can tell you that the screenshots of the PS2 version are much better than what I have played on the PC. There are also 4 PS2-exclusive levels in which you get to play Archer back when she was a spy, and you have to go stealing people's wallets and whatnot. On to the funny part. If you listen to your surroundings before you go in guns blasting, you will find that most of the people will not just be standing around waiting for you to show up, they will be talking about all types of subjects, such as marital problems and shortcomings. The enemies themselves are as smart as you would expect from an international terrorist group. If they find themselves overpowered, they run for cover and call for reinforcements, or if there is no line of escape, they find cover behind objects or other people. If, however, they have you overpowered, then they will advance relentlessly until they kill you, or until you outsmart them by throwing explosive lipstick at them. Yes, explosive lipstick. You also have a mechanical poodle that distracts guard dogs, a berette that can be used to pick locks, and a lighter that can be used to melt locks that can't be picked. You also have sunglasses equiped with a camera and mine detector. You will travel all around the world, from the Caribbean to the Swiss Alps, from a sinking ship to falling from an airplane at 30,000 feet...without a parachute. In other words, you will never get bored by staying in the same setting. Also, there are tons of levels: around 15 settings, made up of 2-5 levels each. That translates into a HUGE amount of levels. The story is also no letdown. You will be literally sitting on the edge of your seat at every twist and turn, and the story is told through colorful characters with excellent voice acting. Another important aspect of the game is the multiplayer experience, and you should expect this to be excellent. Also, you must not forget the amount of nubile female vixens that will rock your world.
The final verdict: If you have a PS2, get this game. If you don't, get a PS2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game with a Bad Reputation., July 19, 2002
By

This review is from: No One Lives Forever (Video Game)
To be honest, I love this game. If you ask me, it's worth every penny of the low price $29.99. Let me explain: First of all, most reviews you will read of this game are WRONG! Gamespot.com gave "No One Lives Forever" a 4.3/10. That's just wrong. Let me tell you why I love this game:

A. Good plot. The plot flows so much better than most shooting games and is rather thick. There is much dialogue between missions but it is all worthwhile and well-done.

B. Great Voices and Characters. This probably makes the game! The characters have advanced relationships with each other. Cate (the main character) is constantly scrutinized by one of her advisors and will always give him an attitude! The voices are very crisp and easy to hear.

C. New Ideas. In this game, you do things that most games would not even try to do! I mean, you shoot people parachuting out of an airplane as you fall thousands of feet! You also are a thief in one part and sneak around the cops to steal wallets.

D. Emotional. The game will get you nervious at times and its very undercover. For example, when stealing a purse, you may get realized and someone will run to the police. While they are going, you must run out of sight! Afterwards, he will investigate the scene including the area around it for you, even looking in every corner! Ingenious!

Now, there are some downsides but they aren't nearly as bad as you may think:
1. Graphics. They aren't the best on the system by far but aren't the worst either. I would say they are acceptable.
2. Controls. They do take time to get used to, but once you do, they become second nature.

Overall, a different kind of shooter and one worthwhile to try or buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars No one lives forever, February 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: No One Lives Forever (Video Game)
first off i must say that this game is great. the graphics are not the best but i looked past the graphics and got involved in the story and game to much to care. for those of you who dont know the story well here it is:
Cate Archer is an agent who used to be a theif. she is trying to stop H.A.R.M and lost two of her partners. the game takes place in the 60s.
for those of you wondering whether or not you should get the game i would say absolutly.
if you are having trouble figuring out where to go on a certain level i recomend going on the internet and printing out a game guide.
the game has something for everyone because before i started playing i did not really like ps2 i did not care for any of the ps2 games but as soon as i started playing i got hooked
