Book Description

April 5, 2005
"No One Loved Gorillas More"

In the early hours of December 27, 1985, Diane Fossey was murdered in her cabin by an unknown attacker -- "No One Loved Gorillas More" are the words inscribed on her gravestone. For 18 years, Dian had lived among the mountain gorillas of central Africa, dedicating all her energy to protecting them. Living in basic conditions at Karisoke, the research center she established below the steep ravines of a rain-shrouded volcano in Rwanda, Dian gradually became accepted by the apes she encountered and developed an extraordinary bond with them.

Undeterred by the instability of the tribal and political wars raging around her, Dian struggled against poachers, Rwandan officials' opposition, ill health, personal tragedy, and the isolation from the surroundings with indefatigable obstinacy and unstinting determination. She collected a vast amount of data and her work became the world's primary focus for mountain gorilla conservation and research. She raised money to pay for anti-poaching measures, set up the first ranger patrols in Rwanda, and through the pages of "National Geographic" magazine and her book "Gorillas in the Mist," focused international attention on the plight of the great apes.

Here, for the first time, Dian's story is told through the letters she wrote to her friends and family, set in context by a compelling narrative. Sometimes scathing, sometimes self-pitying, frequently amusing and always fascinating, these previously unpublished letters provide a unique and intimate portrait and bring to life the rewards and setbacks of Dian's years with the creatures who she called "the greatest of the great apes." These impressive yet shy animals arephotographed by Bob Campbell, who worked closely with Dian and captured many unique and extraordinary images.

"No One Loved Gorillas More" is a powerful reminder of what Dian Fossey was fighting for. Her work not only led to a greater understanding of gorillas, but to a worldwide concern for their survival that still resonates 20 years after her death.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* It's been more than 20 years since the publication of Gorillas in the Mist, Dian Fossey's indelible account of her adventures among the mountain gorillas of the Virguna volcanoes of Rwanda--and since her unsolved murder--and her story remains as compelling as ever. One of Louis Leakey's "Trimates," along with orangutan expert Birute Galdikas and chimpanzee specialist Jane Goodall, who authored this riveting volume's foreword, Fossey not only pioneered the scientific study of a magnificent animal, she also imperiled herself by confronting the poachers invading the great apes' nature reserve. A fresh perspective on Fossey's complex personality, profound devotion to mountain gorillas, and world-changing achievements is forged in a dynamic combination of Bob Campbell's stunning and intimate photographs, journalist and nature writer de la Bedoyere's nimble and moving biography, and Fossey's own colorful and, by turns, frank and dissembling letters to family and friends, vigorous correspondence never before published. This poignant assemblage reveals both the intense joy and immense suffering Fossey experienced during her 18-year sojourn among Rwanda's mountain gorillas, whose descendents, in spite of all the horrors that have transpired, live on in their misty, and vigilantly protected, rain forests. 5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book About a Beautiful Person May 19, 2005
Format:Hardcover
The words "No One Loved Gorillas More" are the words put on Dian Fossey's tombstone after she was murdered. This book is her eulogy. It is composed of letters she wrote between 1966 and her death two days after Christmas, 1985. The letters are combined with more than a hundred color photographs of she and a reverential story of her life by journalist Camilla de la Bedoyere.

Dian spent most of her adult life in the study of the mountain gorilla. She loved those animals more than life herself, and it was her dedicated attempts to preserve them and protect their future that lead to her unexplained killing.

Her legacy lives on. Even with the tremendous upheavals in Rwanda, with the killing of a million or more people, the numbers of wild gorillas is growing. It can only be hoped that this book will help more people to understand what Dian stood and died for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dedicated Woman August 4, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Diane Fossey has been one of my female science heroes ever since I was a little girl. This book gives an interesting view of Diane as a person. She was super dedicated to the Gorillas, but also had many personal demons. If you wanted an introspective view of this legend, I recommend this beautiful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fills out the Dian Fossey Story December 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This was a fantastically interesting read. I loved being able to get inside the mind of the woman behind Karisoke and the Virunga mountain gorillas in Rwanda. After reading her book and watching the movie, this book was the next logical step--and there is more to discover it would seem! I've just found out that a number of her colleagues (including Bob Campbell, her infamous lover) have written books about their version of the events that took place in the Parc des Volcans. I must say I am quite curious and might be tempted to pick up their accounts in the near future.

I'm not sure why the life and story of Dian Fossey holds such a fascination for me, but I feel inexplicably drawn into the circumstances that lead to saving the mountain gorilla from extinction. For anyone out there with a passing interest in animals, conservation, or even just a good real-life adventure of someone overcoming innumerable obstacles, this book is a must-read.
