After spending time down in the dark as, respectively, the terrifyingly immovable object at the center of The Shield and Dexter's unsuspecting love interest, it's more than understandable that both Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz would look for an opportunity to kick back a bit. The all-ages superhero show No Ordinary Family takes a few episodes to get into gear, but eventually achieves an appealing balance between wide-eyed goofiness and fanboyish in-jokes. Series creators Jon Harmon Feldman and Greg Berlanti (Everwood) quickly establish their origin story: following a mysterious plane crash in the jungle, a squabbling family develops powers (invulnerability for Dad, warp speed for Mom, mind reading and super-smarts for the kids). While struggling to comprehend the nature of their new abilities, they come into contact with a weekly succession of mutated baddies--Earthquake Girl, Smoke Man, Wolverine Dude, etc.--created by a sinister CEO (Stephen Collins, having a ball) with his own mysterious intentions for the family. While a promising foundation for a series, the elements do admittedly take a while to jell, slogging through some mundane story lines involving muggers and jewel thieves and the like before raising both the stakes and the effects budget. By the second half of the series, a satisfying mythology has snapped into place, particularly with the introduction of a Freon-blooded supervillain played by the terrific Lucy Lawless. Thankfully, even when the plot falters, the performances remain top-notch throughout. Chiklis and Benz both make for appealingly fallible parental figures, attempting to maintain order while also secretly delighting in their new abilities. As the younger members of the team, Jimmy Bennett and Kay Panabaker also impress, especially in the case of the latter, whose developing ability to tamper with the minds of others leads to some intriguingly thorny subplots. While the lack of a second season unfortunately keeps No Ordinary Family from reaching the potential hinted at by the last few episodes, Chiklis and Co. do their best to keep things soaring. --Andrew Wright

Product Description

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim (Michael Chiklis, “The Shield,” “Fantastic Four”) feels disconnected from his workaholic wife, Stephanie (Julie Benz, “Dexter”), and two teenage children, Daphne (Kay Panabaker, “Summerland”) and JJ (Jimmy Bennett, “Star Trek”). To encourage family bonding time, Jim decides the family will join Stephanie on her business trip to South America. When their plane crashes into the Amazon River, they barely enjoy a moment to celebrate their survival before returning to the grind of everyday life. But they will soon realize that their lives have been forever changed. Each member of the family starts to show signs of new, unique and distinct super powers. Will their newfound abilities finally bring them together or push them further apart?

4.0 out of 5 stars "We were just an ordinary family, until......." July 1, 2011
Format:DVD
Take what's best from The Sheild (Michael Chiklis) and worst from Dexter (Julie Benz, aka Dexter's wife "Rita"), put 'em together with a healthy dollop of "The Six Million Dollar Man" and you've got the barebones of the new series, "No Ordinary Family".

It starts off more than a little cheesy and there's no need to say far-fetched, but some of the scenarios are kind of fun once the series gets rolling, and if you can get past some of the overlong "family drama moments" in the beginning - remember how Rita used to sandbag Dexter at home with her "smotherly" affection? Well, she's still got enough of that here, but fortunately has developed other interests like running at the speed of light, which causes her personality on the show to have come up a notch since Dexter. Chiklis as Vic in "The Shield" never greatly impressed on the home front in that series, and his work as a father here gets by in similar manner initially as he's run over every which way by his wife, daughter, and son. He's still fun outside the home though. However, while the show's family drama stuff is pretty sappy in the beginning, the scenarios created by each of them having super powers makes for some more than watchable moments anyway. Jim Powell (Chiklis), the father, can jump huge distances, and is impervious to bullets while simultaneously being a mild-mannered sketch artist at the police station. The wife runs so fast you can't see her (but excuse me, I find it hard to beleive vacuuming will be effective at this speed). The daughter, in cliche 'teenage turmoil' can read minds (useful for discovering where super-elite frat parties are going to held), and the son develops into a mathematical genius (suprisingly useful when he joins the football team).

No Ordinary Family doesn't start with the promise of greatness, but as the show winds on and the family starts working together as more of a unit, a team, it starts to become more interesting. It's basic plot gimmick was funner than I expected, and the show is somewhat reminiscent of a Spielberg production. "True Blood" also comes to mind, though the story is different. Also, the pacing and writing get a lot better by mid-series.

It's fun to see Chiklis back in action. I think he had a hand in production as well. His wife in the show and co-star, Julie Benz, also has become more likable since Dexter, perhaps largely due to the part she plays here. As the season winds on, she and Chiklis develop a likable chemistry, and the series develops an interesting story arc that keeps it going and keeps you guessing and even keeps you laughing (sometimes at the silliness of it, sometimes at the genuinely funny one-liners). In spite of its absurdity it maintains the "what's gonna happen next??!!" factor. All in all, if you like any of the actors in the show, chances are you may start to enjoy it. I confess I did. It's a guilty pleasure but I'll be watching season 2 when it comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABC doesn't know which shows to keep August 20, 2011
Format:DVD
No Ordinary Family was one of the greatest shows of the 2010-2011 season. It didn't dissapointed me at all, because the main cast is just amazing.
The plot is fresh, and it's (actually) a renovation of the whole superpower fiction. This first (and only season) is exciting, mysterious and it didn't tried too hard to be liked, because the ones we saw it know what i'm talking about. I wish it would come back for a second season, but ABC always makes wrong decisions that are about to be regret, because No Ordinary Family had better chances to improve than other veteran shows that just keep recycling stuff.

This show is a "must buy" if you like science fiction, and of course "no ordinary" plots.

Cliffhanger ?
Did you watch it on TV? I thought the show was abysmal. I mean, I understand everything finds an audience, and if you watched it and liked it then all the power to you. If this is a blind buy, give it a second thought.

And I like a lot of campy comic book type shows. But this one really... Read more
