Editorial Reviews

Review

No Ordinary Marriage is an extraordinary book. What makes this work stand out in an overcrowded marketplace of ‘how to’ books is its compelling vision of marriage for the glory of God. I know of few books on marriage that combine elegant writing, sound doctrine, clear illustrations, and practical advice in equal measure. This is a book on marriage made in heaven. No one, or couple, who reads this book will look at marriage in an ordinary way again.”
Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Research Professor of Systematic Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“This is no ordinary book on marriage. Dr. Tim Savage clears away the rubble and shows you the treasure that can make any marriage rich: a life lived for the glory of God. Embrace the message of this book and it will transform your marriage, your family, and your entire life.”
Colin S. Smith, Senior Pastor, The Orchard Evangelical Free Church; Bible Teacher, Unlocking the Bible

“Being a speaker and writer on marriage, I have read dozens of books on marriage, and No Ordinary Marriage is by far the best. Dr. Tim Savage moves his readers beyond a manual of do's and don'ts into the realm of 'being' in a marriage for the glory of God. A must read for one and all.”
Naomi Rhode, Certified Speaking Professional; Former President, National Speakers Association; recipient, Council of Peers Award for Excellence, Speaker Hall of Fame; author, The Gift of Family

No Ordinary Marriage explains how a marriage is intended to glorify God. Dr. Tim Savage writes not in a spirit of condemnation, but rather of encouragement as he paints a picture of what marriage is really meant to be. In reading this book, Sheryl—my wife of nearly 36 years—and I found ourselves challenged and inspired to rely on God as the core of our marriage. We pray that the Lord will inspire Tim to write his next book—How To Survive Hormonal Teenagers!”
Alice Cooper, Rock Star

The chapters on a wife's role and husband's love were two of the best ones in the book.

If you are at the stage in life that I am, a fifty something, you get to witness the weddings of children -the next generation -that are happening all around us. My own first born recently celebrated a first anniversary. Seeing these young marriages initiated brings reflection on my own marriage experience...and wish that someone had placed in my hands a book like this to deepen an understanding that was left, by God's grace, to gradually accumulate over twenty-eight years.

What Tim Savage has done in this book is help see the beauty in my own marriage and decipher how it grew in that direction while too often ignoring the wise, biblical truths revealed in these pages. It is the reason my son and daughter-in-law received this book as an anniversary gift. That they may see a scripturally insightful description of what God has intended for them. That a trajectory for their marriage may be set early on for a lifetime of blessing one another, others and God.

For those beginning a new life together, I can't recommend a better book that will set a course for receiving all that God intended in this profound relationship. To those who have received some measure of attaining the heights described so well, it is a welcome reflection on the miracle of God's grace in a marital relationship. And, for those who are single, by intention or circumstances, it is an eloquent expression of what is desired for all those brought together in marriage for God's glory.

This is a book about marriage, but I was happy to discover a helpful chapter on singleness. I was thrilled that the author acknowledges singleness as a valid, God-approved way to live the Christian life, which in my experience is rare to find among church leadership. I'm not sure I've ever heard a pastor say to "not relinquish your singleness too readily," but that is the view the author takes. His encouragement is to live the best and highest kind of Christian life as a single, in his words to be "single-hearted" in maximizing our lives for the Gospel. Although the author sets the bar very high, I think singles will find encouragement in his perspective of the role singles play in the Church.

"one of the greatest social tragedies of our day is the underperformance of marriage - not only marriages that end in divorce, but also those which, while remaining 'intact', become painfully strained and emotionally scarred. surely there must be hope for something better, for something more."

together for God's glory

...

the tagline for this book is unpacked on the pages of this fantastic work by dr. tim savage. ben and i are blessed to get to hear him proclaim God's truth every sunday at our church and we are thrilled about this new book. God has blessed this man with a desire for Christ, a brilliant mind, an extreme love for people, a passion for holiness, a keen intellect, a gift for discerning and proclaiming the truth of God's Word, and a humble servant's heart. God has used him mightily to pen an exquisite and profound work on the gift and meaning of marriage.

this book is rich and replete. filled with vibrant observations and significant pertinence. it isn't a quick and practical "how to" guide for married couples. this isn't a step-by-step guide or self-help feel-goodery mumbo-jumbo. it delves into the depths of the sacred union and expresses God's lofty purpose for marriage. savage also discusses cruciform love and how God desires for our marriages to bring glory to Him so that His glory can infuse our relationships, increase our joy, and make us bright lights in a troubled world.

for married couples, engaged couples, dating couples, and soon-to-be-dating individuals, this is a powerful book. pick it up and prayerfully pour over the pages. let it seep into you, convict your heart, encourage your soul, inspire your actions, and shape your relationships - for His glory and your good.

No Ordinary Marriage is spectacular. I just finished reading it once, and now I want to re-read it with my wife.

I was married to an absolutely amazing woman several months ago, and I can already attest to the brilliance, beauty, and helpfulness of this book by Timothy Savage. WOW WOW WOW.

Overall, the whole book is infused with wise counsel on how the glory of God displayed in the Cross-work of Christ, his self-emptying love for sinners, can transform any marriage, thus filling it with the meaning and hope and power that we all long for!

If you are engaged or are a newlywed and are seeking to read a book that will jump-start your marriage for the glory of God, please make it this book! After reading several of the most popular marriage books, it is my opinion that No Ordinary Marriage is the best book on marriage written in a very long time.

What makes it so brilliant?
First, Savage centers marriage on the glory of God. The first three chapters are an explosion of awesomeness. (Several times this chapter made me pause, close the book, and worship Jesus on the spot). Truly, the glory of God is the only proper motivation for Christian marriages! When the glory of God is our motivation in marriage, that is when we experience marriage as it was meant to be: life-giving, romantic (in the non-hollywood sense of the word), holy, and joyful. "Marriages are on firmest ground when partners are most focused on the glory of the Lord."(pg. 23). I believe Newlyweds need to make it their central aim in their lives and marriages to glorify God and Savage helps them attain that goal.

Yet to understand what the "glory of God" means in marriage, Savage points us directly to Christ. In Christ, we discover infinite self-emptying love, or "Cruciform Love".
