5.0 out of 5 stars Idol worship is not strictly the territory of ancient pagan villages
Idol worship is not strictly the territory of ancient pagan villages. "No Other Gods: Confronting Our Modern Day Idols" is a look at the human over-pursuit - where the desire becomes too great and rolls over into the arena of worship. A look into a woman's mind who was affected by this frenzy of materialism, "No Other Gods" is a spiritual guide about setting one's life's...

I was really disappointed with this book. A dear friend of mine recommended it, but we did not realize that she had actually read the Bible study version ("living room series"). Perhaps this author's writing style is more suited to a Bible study.

I was really disappointed with this book. A dear friend of mine recommended it, but we did not realize that she had actually read the Bible study version ("living room series"). Perhaps this author's writing style is more suited to a Bible study.

I gave this book two stars rather than one because there are a few nuggets that shine through, where the author shares of herself and her experience in a way that allows you to glimpse the transforming power that she talks about. From these few examples, I can tell that the she has had a significant experience, but she does not share enough of herself to let us in on that experience. There's not enough to connect with the reader.

The VAST majority of the book is filled with generic, vague allusions to struggles, steps, and recoveries. You get little to no insight about what these struggles actually were, what functional idols she has let go of, what steps she has taken, and HOW she has been transformed. Instead, the overall impression is trite, impersonal, and superficial. While there are a few glimpses, it fails to really express the power that I do believe this author (and many of us who seek God) has experienced and longs to experience.

Idol worship is not strictly the territory of ancient pagan villages. A look into a woman's mind who was affected by this frenzy of materialism, "No Other Gods" is a spiritual guide about setting one's life's priorities in the right order. Highly recommended for community library Christian studies collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please, KEEP WRITING Kelly!, August 15, 2008
This review is from: No Other gods: Confronting Our Modern Day Idols (Paperback)
This is the second book I read by Kelly Minter (the first was Water into Wine) and I absolutely LOVE her! It is appropriate that the Bible study she wrote, with the same title, is part of The Living Room Series, because that is exactly where you feel you are while reading Kelly's books! She shares stories that we can all relate to and the reader is drawn seamlessly to the parallels between Kelly's stories, their own life struggles and the relevance of the Living Word TODAY. I am glad I read the book before I started the Bible study...which I begin today :) I HIGHLY recommend both of Minter's books. You will feel like you are hanging out in your own living room with your favorite girlfriend sharing the intimate details of your spiritual journey, hopes, fears, dreams, and struggles. Water into Wine: Hope for the Miraculous in the Struggle of the Mundane

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing, May 25, 2011
This review is from: No Other gods: Confronting Our Modern Day Idols (Paperback)
This book literally changed my life. I went into the bookstore, saw this, and thought "I don't need this book, I know who God is and I don't put anything before Him" HA!... Was I wrong, this book opened my eyes to the little things I do unknowingly that come before God in my life as well as the big things I need to surrender to Him. After reading this book, I wish I could find Kelly Minter and give her a huge HUG... This book has changed me forever, it has got me back aligned with God, and improved the way I see MY God. On top of being a good book, it's also funny, fresh, and honest. IT is as if you're sitting and having girl-talk with your big sister... You definitely should read this!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Kelly's writing style. Her young, hip and easy writing make it easy to zip through this book. I read it faster than I wanted and was sad when I got to the end that I couldn't enjoy her delightful humor the next day for my reading. I meant to buy the study book, and she mentions in this book that there is one, so I will be looking into that next.

I purchased this book when I purchased the bible study by the same name, "No Other gods." I was not disappointed. I believe the book discusses some of the other issues that the bible study did not. It was a convicting book and helped me realize that I did have some modern day idols, one being my computer.

If you want to learn what idols are and if you have any, buy this book and get the bible study too. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars No other gods., November 21, 2009

This review is from: No Other gods: Confronting Our Modern Day Idols (Paperback)
"No other gods" is an excellent book which shows us how God loves us with a strong love and wants to be first in our lives as it says in the 1st Commandment, which is " Thou shall have no other gods before me." Kelly Minter exposes our modern day idols in our lives which we place a higher priority on more than our relationship with the one true God. This book brings that first commandmant into the century that we live in and makes it relevant to our lives. This is a must read for every Christian. Her syle of writing is refreshing and it is an easy read, but will give you much food for thought and will expose your heart and your true loves.
