Book Description

December 1, 1997
A man is lucky to live his life in a place like Cutler, Colorado. At least that's what Fred Vickery thinks--and he ought to know. A lifelong resident, Fred is seventy-three and still going strong. He plans to live in Cutler for the rest of his life--and the last thing he wants to see is change. But Fred's about to discover once again that the more things change, the more they stay the same... NO PLACE FOR SIN Fred Vickery is not a betting man. Never was. But he would wager every penny he has that bringing gambling to Cutler, Colorado is the biggest mistake the town could ever make. Fred doesn't think the issue is worth killing over--but someone in town apparently does. Just hours after inciting a near riot at the Copper Penny, Lenore Irvine is found murdered. And it doesn't take Fred long to get into the thick of the police investigation, especially since his son-in-law is the prime suspect. It just goes to show--in a town like Cutler, murder always strikes close to home.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hope this series never ends, November 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: No Place for sin (Paperback)
Cutler, Colorado is a beautiful small town, a virtual oasis of serenity in a violent world. Senior citizen and part-time sleuth Fred Vickery has lived his entire life in the tranquil town and always stands by to protect it, his family, and his friends from nefarious activities that periodically encroach. When home boy David Newman returns to the town after a long absence, he plans to campaign to bring legalized gambling to Cutler. Though this would give the local economy a needed boost, Fred opposes the idea and actively plans to stop it from occurring. While Fred will use legal means, a more militant individual, Lenore Irvine, the town's self proclaimed arbiter of morality, intends to be much more active in stopping the plan.

Before Lenore can start her campaign, she is found dead inside her car which has been deliberately pushed off the road. Early evidence points towards Fred's son-in-law as the prime murder suspect since he was observed threatening the deceased just before she was killed and other evidence proves that his car pushed her car off the road. Fred thinks his son-in-law is guilty, but his own daughter does not believe this for a moment. She convinces Fred that he is not being objective because he does not like her spouse. To help his daughter, Fred investigates the murder, placing himself in mortal danger.

The hero of NO PLACE FOR SIN is a very active, intelligent, and likable septuagenarian. Sherry Lewis demonstrates that our senior citizens make vital contributions to the well being of society and should be revered for their wisdom. The recurring characters imbue the audience with a feeling of meeting dear friends, while the absorbing mystery is well crafted. Anyone who has read the Fred Vickery novels will taste victory and become a lifetime fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable cozy mystery featuring a retired gentleman as sleuth, April 11, 2006

This review is from: No Place for sin (Paperback)
Fred Vickery lives in Cutler, CO, a picturesque small town where everyone knows everyone, and it is assumed that there are no secrets -- not quite true. Someone has the idea to bring gambling to Cutler, to boost the economy and make a few people rich. Fred doesn't like the idea, and Lenore, the town's grumpy puritanical nose in everybody's business type, is even more against it. But Fred has other concerns -- his son in New Hampshire wants him to either go into a retirement home or move in with the son, and his daughter in Cutler is married to a ne'er do well with a drinking problem. Someone gets murdered, and it seems likely that this is related to the gambling question and that Fred's son-in-law is a suspect. Fred gets involved asking questions, trying to find out the truth about who-done-it.

I had a good idea early on who did it, but that's because I read a lot of mysteries and not because the plotting was bad. It was an enjoyable read, competently written, and I intend to read more in the series.

I haven't read it yet but am familiar with this author and the characters. I'm sure I will enjoy it when I get to it. I have several other books to read before I do get to it as I read books in the order they are purchased.
