Book Description

No Regrets Parenting is a book for busy parents in our busy times. Juggling family and professional lives is not a course taught in high school or college--many parents find the challenges of being all things to all people daunting. This theme is ubiquitous in today's culture--movies, theatre, books, magazine features, and human interest news stories all find the challenge of raising children to be prime fodder for audiences. How to do it all? How to stay sane while trying to do it all?

No Regrets Parenting teaches parents how to experience the joy and depth of the parenting experience amidst the chaos and choreography of daily routines. Car pool, bath time, soccer practice, homework, dinner hour, and sleepovers all become more than just obligations and hurdles to overcome to get through the day. They are opportunities for intimate and meaningful time--quality time--with young kids. It's not how much time you have with your kids, but how you spend that time that matters in the life and legacy of a young family. No Regrets Parenting readjusts parents' perspectives and priorities, helping them find the time to do it all and feel good about your kids' childhood.

There is a simple, single truth for every parent. Your kids need you to be there. They need to see who you are and how you live your life. And, in return, they will help you to see who you are and how you should be living your life. For all of that to happen, parents need time with their kids. Memorable and meaningful time. No Regrets Parenting is about time. Finding enough of it and making the most of it.

It presents an upbeat and refreshing perspective which empowers parents to examine, without guilt, the choices they make about the time spent with their children. The book is neither preachy nor prescriptive, but instead presents a menu of creative strategies for “turning scarce minutes in to special moments.” Dr. Rotbart’s book, a must-read for any parent, will leave your head buzzing with ideas. The short chapters enable you to read a few at a time – in between pajama walks, movie nights, and carpool driving – that will forge a lifelong bond between you and your children.”

2.0 out of 5 stars You could write this book August 14, 2012
You could write this book. I know I could. Rotbart's advice isn't bad, but if you're dedicated enough to be contemplating buying this book on Amazon, believe me, you've though of these idea on your own.

Here's a sampling of what he recommends: eat dinner together, read bedtime stories to your kids, have a family movie night, help them with their homework, have them help out in the kitchen, go to the library together. Lovely ideas, all of them, but I'm guessing these are things that you're already doing or trying to do.

Then there are the ideas that seem slightly overprotective or obsessive. He recommends against family pets because the parents will end up taking care of them and that robs them of time they could be spending with their child. He also recommends against sleep away camps because then you have to go several days without tucking them into bed. He likes the idea of sleepovers, but he thinks you should always host them and to that end you should make sure that your house has the best snacks and pancake breakfasts.

Bottom line: check it out of the library if you're curious, but don't buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did I Ever Need To Read This Book! February 22, 2012
OMG! Trying to juggle career and family is such a struggle. I feel guilty all the time because it seems whatever I do, I'm neglecting either my kids or my job.

The brilliance of No Regrets Parenting is that it really does put the emphasis on the number of "moments" you accumulate with your children, not the number of minutes.

Dr. Rotbart finds opportunities for "moments" in the everyday routines we all undertake - such as car time - that otherwise are overlooked. This book won't add hours to the day, but it will give you the tools to make better, more satisfying use of the hours you do have (and often waste). I hope his sequel will be, No Regrets Careers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Antidote to Tiger Moms and Bebe Moms February 29, 2012
By Rita
No Regrets Parenting is a welcome antidote to Tiger moms and Bringing up Bebe moms. It is such a relief to not be told HOW to raise kids, but rather how to FIND THE TIME to raise your kids the way you feel is best for them and for you. This is an absolutely non-judgmental book, freeing working and stay-at-home parents alike from the guilt of not spending enough time with their kids by teaching us to rethink the time we do spend with them. The bumper sticker promotion for the book, turning minutes to moments, is so true. We spend so many wasted minutes with our kids, in separate orbits, when we could spend the same amount of time making memories with them. This is my new go-to gift for parents, especially those who are moving so fast they can't fully appreciate the wonders that their kids really are. The book is a delight to read, and makes parents feel good again about being how they are parenting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas for busy parents. April 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has good ideas for busy parents. As a mom who works full-time and is going to school for an MBA, doing lengthy, involved projects is rarely an option for me. This books gives ideas on how to squeeze out GREAT time in even just a few moments a day. My favorite piece of advice from the book is when you've had your fill of your child's behavior to take a moment and picture them grown up and moving out of the house - this is an instant mommy brightener. I can go from extremely annoyed with my little guy to extremely enamored in about 3 seconds flat. Love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars breezy and nice September 10, 2012
By Just Me
I discovered this book when Parenting magazine ran an excerpt in their March 2012 issue. Light-hearted but very true look at how precious our time with our children is ("There are only 940 Saturdays between a child's birth and her leaving for college."), so you should ensure that you and they enjoy their childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless Parenting Advice February 22, 2012
I don't think Dr. Rotbart ever met my parents, but he wrote the book they could have written. No Regrets Parenting is a fun, touching, easy-to-read formula for raising great kids and seeing them off on their independent journeys satisfied that they and you squeezed the most out of their childhood.

I'm the mother of a 2-year-old daughter and I plan to keep, reread, and use No Regrets Parenting as a manual until she graduates high school - and probably well beyond.

We already do Pajama Walks and my husband and I love them as much as my daughter does. Every parent deserves to own a copy of No Regrets Parenting.

What an impact this book has left on me ... my thoughts about childhood, parenting, time-management and more! I learned so much about the type of parent I WANT TO BE. Dr. Harley's ideas are clever, cute, do-able and meaningful.
