Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Originally released in 1989 on the Island Records label, No Respect was the debut from this California quintet originally from the Bay Area. The band consisted of Davy Vain on vocals, Danny West and James Scott on guitars, Ashley Mitchell on bass and Tom Rickard on drums. Produced by Paul Northfield, assisted by Davy Vain. Vain, along with Jetboy and the Sea Hags, helped solidify the San Francisco Metal scene. Contemporaries included Metallica, Exodus and Death Angel (who Davy Vain produced). BGO. 2009. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Stuff!, September 19, 2005
By Alfio J. Vasta "ajvasta" (Virginia Beach, VA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: No Respect (Audio CD)
I somehow missed this band when they came out in the 80's, even though it seems I have almost everything from that era. So I bought this based on the reviews from you all posted here. I was not disappointed! This is a very straight forward CD, although the vocals seem to be mixed much louder than the background instruments. This is not necessarily bad, as the vocalist is very good. For those of you really wanting to know what this band sounds like.....I would say a West Coast version of Tuff Luck (sorry if you don't know that band, but no other really sounds close to these guys). Maybe a touch of "Killer Dwarfs" thrown in for good measure. Although many of the reveiws here (as well as in the CD booklet) claim these guys as "harder than their peers" or "less refined" or "rougher around the edges", I did not think so. It's just a slightly different sound from the stuff that was being put out in L.A. at the time. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most overlooked bands of all-time, November 23, 2006
By CheddarPants (Lexington, KY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: No Respect (Audio CD)
I first heard about Davy Vain from the band Death Angel. He produced their incredible "Frolic through the Park" album, and after a show in Cincinnati, DA guitarist Rob Cavestany told me that I would be floored when "No Respect" hit the streets. He wasn't kidding.

To call Vain "glam" really doesn't do them justice. From a strict musical standpoint, they were far more talented and diverse than most of the metal bands who were around in the late 1980s. They weren't gimmicky, which probably contributed to their lack of record sales. If they had simplified it a bit, like maybe Warrant or Britny Fox for example, they probably would have sold millions of records. They were too good for their own good. And their live show was outstanding, too.

The only negative thing about "No Respect" is the occasionally cheesy lyrics. To this day, I can't listen to the chorus of "Aces" without laughing.

I still have an original copy of this on CD (vinyl, too), and I listen to it at least every couple of weeks. It has definitely stood the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Respect Indeed, June 29, 2006
This review is from: No Respect (Audio CD)
This band came out just a little too late. I bought this cd in 88 when it came out and with all the other glam bands that were out at the time there seemed no room for Vain. I have been listening to this disc for 18 years solid. Too many stand out tracks on this disc to mention, no filler here. If you like your metal raw and sleazy, definitly for you. Buy, Listen and Enjoy.
