Book Description

January 31, 2012
An F-18 Navy fighter careens out of the blue sky above the Mojave desert. A TV cameraman who grew up in a small town just miles away can see what is going to happen next. Frantically, Wes Stewart races to the downed jet and tries to save the pilot’s life. When the plane explodes, Wes escapes without harm—and plunges into a murderous conspiracy.

It’s been fifteen years since Wes has been back to the desolate land of his childhood. Now he finds himself up against the U.S. military, the local police, and someone who is tracking his every move. In the moments he spent with the dying pilot, Wes discovered something that could get him killed. But while he tries to untangle a web of lies and secrets surrounding the crash, another danger is stalking him. And this one he will never see coming.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Battles keeps layering on the suspense until you can hardly breathe.”—Linwood Barclay

No Return tells a story as clean and spare as the desert itself, stripped to the essentials: story, character, setting, emotion—and presented with an urgency that sets a new standard for pace. Brett Battles deserves thriller stardom.”—Tim Hallinan, author of The Queen of Patpong

“The best word I can use to describe his writing is addictive.”—James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author of The Devil’s Colony

“Sure-footed and clever, No Return is a great read.”—Meg Gardiner, author of The Nightmare Thief

5.0 out of 5 stars Must reading from Battles., January 31, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Wes Stewart is a cameraman filming a fluff piece in the high Mojave desert when an F-18 has a near miss with the filming crew and slams into the desert floor. Wes makes it to the cockpit in time to attempt to rescue the pilot, but the plane explodes in flames before he can extricate the man.

In the aftermath Wes is confronted with discrepancies in the public story surrounding the incident. Initially he finds the inconsistencies confusing but comes to realize the intentional coverup has him squarely in the crosshairs.

Wes, who grew up close to the naval airbase finds home to be fraught with memories. His own backstory emerges as he finds himself in the midst of events he cannot understand or explain. Can he get to the truth (and does the truth touch his past?) before they get to him?

Battles (the author of the Cleaner series) writes a crisp, suspense-filled thriller. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Could Not Put It Down, February 1, 2012

This review is from: No Return: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
No Return: A Novel by Brett Battles hits all the points for me to gain a five-star rating. The action is fast-paced, the story line is intriguing, and the characters are likable. As a fan of Mr. Battles' Jonathan Quinn series, Logan Harper series and Project Eden series, I was happy when I got the notice from Amazon that my pre-ordered Kindle book had arrived. I started reading first thing in the morning, and couldn't put the book down until the last word.

Our hero, a camera guy with a small crew creating a fluff piece in the Mojave Desert, ends up witnessing a plane crash and unsuccessfully trying to rescue the pilot. This traumatic incident and the publicity that follows involves the entire crew in events that change some of their lives forever. A cover up? Secrets from the past? National security? All these things come together as Wes Stewart tries to unravel the mysteries and also comes face-to-face with his past. Battles weaves a strong and entertaining tale that holds its own as a stand-alone with room for future stories about the intrepid cameraman. I can almost imagine him running into some of the characters from the other series.

In short, I recommend this book for anyone who likes mysteries and thrillers...and especially for anyone who already loves Battles' other books. I thoroughly enjoyed reading NO RETURN.

4.0 out of 5 stars superb taut thriller, January 31, 2012
This review is from: No Return: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
In the Mohave Desert near Ridgecrest, California, Wes Stewart and a crew are working in a film. For Wes the assignment is a homecoming of sorts having lived nearby as a child though this is his first return in about fifteen years.

Wes notices an F-18 Navy fighter plane flying across the clear blue sky on a trajectory that can only mean crash. He runs to the site to rescue the pilot. However, before he can get the aviator out of the F-18, an explosion turns the plane into a crematorium. The local newspaper proclaims Wes a hero, but what shakes him is the photo of the deceased; the man in the newspaper's picture is not the person he helplessly watched die in the plane. Suddenly Wes is a person of interest to the local police and the Navy; however, it is the third party he is unaware of who stalks him with deadly intent.

With Jonathan Quinn taking a well-earned respite from his Cleaner work (see Shadow of Betrayal; and The Silenced), Brett Battles provides a superb taut thriller of a Good Samaritan learning the road to hell is paved in the desert. The storyline is fast-paced from the moment Wes fails at the rescue and never slows down until the final confrontation. Although the overly frequent use of happenchance detracts from the plot, readers will enjoy Wes' homecoming.
