I love the advent calendar! It takes me back to my childhood which is quite a few decades ago. My grandsons both commented on the scriptures..

A nice calendar, overall. Keep in mind that it is only two layers of cardstock, and only 14"x11" so the windows with the verses qre quite small (about 7pt font). Also, since this calendar is probably marketed towards a Roman Catholic audience, the pictures feature illustrations of Mary, Joseph and Jesus with halos, and the Scripture reading uses the Catholic-approved New American Bible. This gives some unusual readings, such as Isaiah 9:5 -- "They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace."

we buy one of these every year and it was probably the nicest one ever and really a good price. It was lovely with the verses that go with each date. Also really pretty......................you can ever save it for another year if you wanted to.............but it's better to get another one next year, hope they will have them next year!

Each door of the Advent Calendar tells another verse of the story. During the count-down to Christmas, little minds are most often preoccupied with the accumulation of presents, and the anticipation of stuff that 'Santa' picked out at Wal Mart. While the gifting activities of St. Nicolas may resonate with the Christian story of the nativity of Christ, the liturgical church observes a church season of Advent marked with prayers and sometimes fasting to acknowledge a birth which was 'prepared' for a certain time and season.

There's a reason why families in tune with the church tradition mark each day, sometimes with lighting a candle of an advent wreath and singing hymns and carols together. Others might accent the dinner table each evening by reading devotions or special stories. The abbreviated Christmas story -- "but when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law..." (Galatians 4:4, ASV) Although the traditions may pre-date even the Chanukah practice of lighting a menorah and singing Psalms, it's reasonable to suspect Christian imitations of the Jewish traditions.

The first Christians had chosen to interpret prophetic verses as a match for events which had occurred in the life of the one called Jesus. This is why exactly 'who' penned the original words of the epistle letters has mostly passed out of memory. The 'scriptures' being used in Christian worship hadn't yet formed into their own liturgy like that already employed in synagogues. In the beginning of Christendom, everyone still used the pre-existing Jewish scriptures. So it's also not coincidence that Advent calendars (usually) include some of the prophetic verses which make up the liturgy of this season.

I loved Advent calendars as a child and I wanted my kids to have the same excitement and anticipation. This calendar was perfect and met my every expectation. I will most likely purchase another one next year.

This Christmas picture has been hung eye level at the bottom of our steps and is adding to the anticipation of Christmas. Each evening we open a door as we head up the stairs for bed, each morning it greets the little groggy pajama clad cuties as they stumble into a new day. It reminds of in a beautiful way of the real reason for Christmas. The artwork is beautiful, and the touch of glitter makes it special.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this but we really love it. It is a cardboard calendar. It is beautifully printed and everyday we look forward to opening up a new window. It is sturdy enough to last a long time if well cared for. This is a great little advent calendar.
