Best album by the best underappreciated band...,

This review is from: No Room (Audio CD)
The Samples, believe it or not, have been around for 20 years. And, on top of that, they've had the curse of being friends with a lot of bands that make it big (Dave Matthews Band, Hootie and the Blowfish), while they simply sit back and watch. Although the group is past its prime now, there was a time when they were one of the hottest college bar bands in the nation. Their devoted fan base has always been a combination of neo-hippy earthy types and college frat guys, and it is basically the constant touring that has kept this band alive (lets be honest, it's certainly not the album sales).
That being said, this is the band's finest album. Over the years, most of their songs and albums have been nailed with a barrage of criticism for sounding too similar, but this album ventures away from that. The band uses primarily acoustic guitars with subtle drums and pipes/keyboards to convey messages of everything from environmental awareness to alienation. The calm acoustic guitar on "Giants," sharply contrasts the pulsating electric riff of "Pain," for example, and that's the type of diversity that many Samples' albums lack. Although the production and general mixing of the album sounds a little dated at times (a little too "early 90s,"), it's still a solid album any way you look at it. The highlights include the aformentioned "Pain" and "Did You Ever Look So Nice," possibly the bands most popular song to date. Be sure to also check out the Samples live album, "Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility," for a glimpse at the band playing in the environment that suits them best, their live show.

Best Samples CD,

I've been a samples fan ever since my cousin from oregon left one of his Samples Cd at my house several years ago and No Room has got to be the best cd by them. Nearly every single song on this cd is great. My favorites are When It's Raining, Another Disaster and Suburbia. None of my friends have ever heard of the Samples [they think i'm talking about samples as in the word not the band] but ive made them listen to them and they love them. BUY THIS CD!!

The Best Samples album out there,
By Bennet J (Tucson, AZ) - See all my reviews

You will find more classics on this album than on any others. When It's Raining, Summertime, Did You Ever Look So Nice, Another Disaster, Stone Tears, Nothing Lasts For Long are all greats. For all the years they've been around it amazes me how many people don't know of The Samples. I guess they aren't for everyone, but there's always that certain someone who (like me) hears them the first time and gets hooked.

This CD is constantly in my stereo. The first time I heard Didja and When it's Raining I was completely hooked. You must see the band live to truly appreciate some of the stuff on here. I have introduced so many people to the band through this album and now many of them own every Samples album. Its a must have.

Buy this CD...enjoy it for what it is...music played from the heart. You'll soon be seeking out Samples bootlegs and Sean Kelley's solo work. Think of the soaring beauty of the Colorado mountains along with the party atmosphere of Boulder, and you have The Samples. A truly guilty pleasure that my "cool" friends are missing out on.

If you are going to buy a Samples cd for the first time, I strongly recomend this one. I've had it for over 15 years and it still sounds good. It made so much sense to me in High School, and now in my 30's every song is still relatable. It's a great album, start to finish. Some songs might have a bit too much keyboard by today's standards, but they stand the test of time. Sean Kelly is an amazing singer-song writer. It really sucks these guys never got the same recognition Dave Matthews, Blues Traveler did. Why? we'll never know. BTW I'm so bummed I never got to see them in concert.
