Hands down the best hiphop lp of 2004,
By
This review is from: No Said Date (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
After a disappointing releases from Ghostface (def jam, not really surprising) and Raekwon, and a dismal release from Mr. Meth, Masta Killa has released a vintage, classic wu lp. And though it took 11 years for his debut to be released, this lp sounds as if you are listening to the glory days of the wu when they could do no wrong. Masta Killa has always been the most slept on member of the wu but no one has ever doubted his ability to spit fire. Though he may not have brought all of his usual lyrical heat, this is the best wu release since "Supreme Clientle" and "Legend of the Liquid Sword", even surpassing those two releases in some ways. The reunification of the entire wu tang clan-producers an emcees certainly helps and shows that with the wu, when they keep it in the family, the results are amazing. The lp starts off with a vintage 36 Chambers skit "Born Chamber" which leads into 2 of the lp's five stand out tracks, namely "Grab the Microphone" (prod. by Brock) and "No Said Date" (prod. by Rza) which also happens to be the title track to the lp. "Whatever" f/Streetlife and Prodigal Son (prod. by Mathematics) is fire, as is "Silverbacks" (prod. by Tru Master) and features the clans two best wordsworths GZA and Inspectah Deck. "School" (prod by RZA) is amazing and uses as it's intro an excerpt from the classic tv sitcom "Good Times." The rest of the lp is just as quality. "Last Drink" features solid production from Mathematics, "D.T.D." which features Rae and Ghost is definitely a joint for the clubs, but Mathematics again comes through on the production side of things and the song doesn't seem out of place on this vintage lp. "Love Spell" (prod. by Dave West) at first listen doesn't sound like it belongs, and it is definitely my least favorite joint, but it's a nice change from the grit and grime that you hear musically on this, and Masta Killa rides the track quite nicely. "Old Man" (prod. by RZA) uses the "Sanford & Son" theme music and features the late O.D.B. with his always comical antics, and the video is just as throwback as the song. "Secret Rivals, Digi Warfare" and "Queen" are all solid, featuring Meth, Killa Priest, RZA and U God and production by Tru Master and Choco.
For all of the wu fans out there that have been longing for that vintage and classic wu sound instead of all the garbage that's been coming from them over the last few years, this is a must have. Somewhere between the lines of "36 Chambers, Liquid Swords and Supreme Clientle" even if it sounds like it should have been released circa 1996/97, you will never get tired of listening to this lp. Hopefully Ghost will return to the formula used by Masta Killa and Method Man will finally live up to his potential and put out an lp worthy of representing the WU on their next releases and if there truly is to be another Wu lp in the works, hopefully this is a sign of what is to come, as this lp has rejuvinated interest in the Wu once again. Thank you Masta Killa for this release and for saving the legacy of the Wu.

Wu's Behind The Scenes MC Tears It Up.,

It took a long time, and Masta Killa openly said that his album would drop on No Said Date. Wu fans will find that it was well worth the long wait. Masta Killa's sleepy sound, unique flow, and lyrical genius combine to make an East Coast masterpiece. Mathematics & RZA do some excellent production, and the beats on the entire album allow Masta Killa to shine. "Whatever" with Streetlife (a slept on Wu affiliate), and Prodigal Sunn (skilled member of Sunz of Man), and the self-titled track are arguably the two best songs on the album. Silverbacks (w/ GZA & Inspectah Deck), No Said Date, School (w/RZA) and D.T.D (w/ Raekwon & Ghostface are also high caliber tracks. This album is a must have. Most people, even Wu fans, don't realize the power of Masta Killa. This CD truly shows his unique Shaolin style, and GZA-caliber lyricism.

CLASSIC WU. when the album starts it has something the wu has benn missing, a damn wu tang movie intro and many drops up and down this album. PRoduction is outstanding, RZA and Tru masta, Mathmatics lead the way behind the boarsd there is no wak songs on this album. AND as for guest the entire wu is on this album, the last wu solo to have all of wu featured was Gza's liquid swords. Masta has tru lyrics his flow has always been different, but ull feel it. i wish method would have listen to this album b4 putting out that garbage, Masta killa set a bluprint for the wu, ghostface new album is on point to but this is a more wu-tang clan solo album b4 wu tang forever or what i call the start of the endin. if this album dropped in 95 it would have went plat cuz hip hop heads was tru , if u want tru wu tang music or show these new kids what wu tang music was in 95 drop this album and let them hear silverback( the hottest song), Masta killa, No said Date, or DTD. this album made me go listen to cubin linx and liquid swords and ironman, this album belongs in that mix. the truth behind this album is its vintage and new, some songs were recorded in 96 so u know it on point, plus masta killa got a mk exclusives album with unrealeased wu bangas. I just got the albumn this weekend and LOVE it. This was the best albumn to have been SLEPT on since Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt. It's soo good you won't see it coming. I only heard one song fron this album on XM radio, "Old Man" and even then I thought it was a new ODB joint.
Lyrically, Masta Killa proves the strength of the Wu-Tang Clan. He can hold songs down on his own. Having every member of the original Clan makes this album better than the group's sophmore release Wu Forever. The Production for this album really stands out. RZA laced 3 of tracks and blew up 2 of the 3. The guest producers arguably outshine RZA on songs like Grab the Microphone and I damn near lost it when Mathematics dropped the CHEERS Theme song at the end of Last Drink. If you liked Return of the 36th Chamber, Liquid Swords, Iron Man and Only Built for Cuban Linx, you'll love this album. Yes it's THAT good. Don't forget to grab RZA's Book - The Wu-Tang Manual: Enter the 36 Chambers, Volume One. The Abbot drops knoweledge on how the Wu became the best group in Hip Hop history. It will add a new dimension to every Wu-Tang song you will ever listen to.

ok look, rapping after it's tenth year is a career. and its work, the wu invented its own genre and brought with it a whole new idea of what hip hop is, with characters like in comic books and take-no-prisoners lyrics. standing ovation for masta killah. keeping it just like we remember. masta killah is the most low key of wu tangs members, and at a time when most of the others have faded alittle on thier acts, leave it to the humble masta killah monk to come forth and tell us all whats up. im sure that the others with follow in. great beats, great ryhmes, wu tang is forever.

people dont give masta killa his respect. every wu member except for u-god is a great rapper, and mk is definitely no exception. gza is certainly the best lyricist, but i think mk rates up there with deck and raekwon (not ghost, though, ghostface is crazy with words). he took his time coming out with this, i dont know why, but the world needed a solid wu tang album, and dammit, here it is.
it opens with a standard issue kung fu movie sample, and builds very slowly. "grab the mic is basically an introduction, even though i have listened to it several times by now, mostly for this one cool line he does that is really really long. "love spell" is a love song, and that bothers some people, but it isnt a bad song at all. i dont really think there are any bad songs on this album. the album really gets started with "dtd," which has mk in between raekwon and ghostface, and they all sound good, even though i am not entirely sold on that beat and the hook ("do that dance..."). "whatever" has some guys i havent really heard of, but they are ok, except for when the one guy says "there is no I in team, we all ride...YO." and then "secret rivals," that is one of my favorite cuts on the album, i must be the only one that was completely amazed at killah priest's verse. method man is on here too, the song is totally sinister and the beat is rhythmically unusual but its really cool. the last part of the album is good too. "digi warfare" finds mk doing a tribute to the old school, and "old man" has odb singing the bassline to a sanford & son sample. "queen" is another love type song with a nice beat. "school" and "silverbacks" are two of the other best songs. on "school," mk and rza give their own spin on public education on a track that makes a drastic change in tempos. and "silverbacks" features the masterful lyrical stylings of inspectah deck and the one and only genius, and they deliver everything you would expect from them. gza ends the track very nicely, and mk gives himself one more solo track so nobody forgets its his album. even though mk has a great rhyme style, he is not exactly an overcoming personality, so all the guests are very necessary to the album. but i think his deliberate personality is what made this album as solid and balanced as it is. the production holds up well throughout, from the kind of quiet soul thing on "silverbacks" to the more bombastic tracks like "whatever," and the bruce lee stylings of the closer "masta killa." dont try to decide whether it is a classic or not, that is not the type of thing you can decide in a few months. but its good.

After sub-par albums by fellow Wu brethren Ghost,Meth&Chef one would think Masta Killa would follow suit but he did not instead he opted for that Wu chamber music.Good job Masta Killa you have just ressurrected the once great Wu Tang Clan.TRUE MASTER OUTSHINES THE RZA & MATHEMATICS with these 2 Killa TRACKZ (QUEEN & SILVERBACKS) I haven't heard nothing like this from the Wu camp in a long time not since EARLY 90'S.P.S MASTA KILLA IF YOU ARE READING THIS I WANNA CONGRATULATE YOU ON A JOB WELL DONE MATTER OF FACT I COPPED 10 OF NO SAID DATE B/C WE ME & MY FRIENDS ARE TRYING TO PUSH THIS ALBUM TO AT LEAST GOLD STATUS.I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT NEW YORK HIP HOP/ARTIST(GOOD ONES)B/C N.Y.C HIP HOP IS THE BEST COMPARED TO OTHER AREAS OF THE COUNTRY THAT ARE CHURNING OUT WACK ALBUMS.NEW YORK DOMINATED THE MUSIC B/W 1988-1996 TO SHOW PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD HOW REAL HIP HOP SHOULD BE DONE BUT LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED WE HANDED THE BATON OVER TO OTHER REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY TO DO THEIR THING AND THEY MESSED IT UP AND WHAT REALLY REALLY GOT ME MAD IS THAT THE WACKNESS THEY BE PUTTING OUT OVER THERE i.e ATL,ST LOUIS E.T.C IS SPREADING TO NEW YORK SON. Classic Wu Solo Album....,
By A Customer
This review is from: No Said Date (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
For a long time I could never figure out why Masta Killa hadn't put a solo album out. Its been 10 years since the first Wu solo album was release. I can understand why he waited so long, this album is a classic. This makes up for the joke of an album Method Man put out last week (which will sell more than Masta's album, now thats no justice at all). Masta Killa has so much to say on this CD, he is probably the second most knowledgable Wu-member, next to GZA. The production is also great, you won't find no P-Diddy production on this CD (unlike Meth's). The production on No Said Date is pretty much in house (RZA, Mathematics, and True Master). There are only 4 songs not produced by that trio, and they are pretty damn good too. Even the skits are classic, they sound like they came straight from 36 Chambers (except for the one with the kids rapping). The only part of the album that I didn't like was the out of nowhere Cheers theme song (not saying thats a bad theme song probably the best TV song ever), just didn't seem to fit. But this album is by far a classic solo album, definitely pick it up. If you are debating between this and Method Man's new solo, definitely go with No Said Date.

No Said Date is Timeless and The Hip-Hop LP of The Year!,
By
This review is from: No Said Date (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This album is an istant classic, not only in the Wu Saga, but also in the Hip-Hop one. Masta Killa worked on this album for 11 years, he has put so much work on it, and it shows. This album went way beyond my expextations. It's good, good, good. It contains top everything:lyrics, beats, collabos, even skits. Yes, they are one of the best I've heard in an album. All the tracks are dope, the ones I'm feeling the most are: #3-No Said Date #4-Last Drink #7-D.T.D. (I don't know why, but the track 7 on most albums is ALWAYS AWSOME) #14-School #15-Silverbacks #16-Masta Killa Honorable mention to the skits/interludes that are great and not boring *("The Future" of Wu might be in good hands) Of course I love the others too, but those are the ones that I gave 5/5 on my WMP; the others 4 tracks w/ 4/5, and 2 tracks w/ 3.5/5. But the more i litsen to them I sometimes decrease, as well, increase the score. My best appearances at the moment are: 2)RZA (School) Honorable Mentions: 2Pac (word up baby!) and the lil' kids of "The Future" skit. lol The other appearances are very good too, those are just the ones I'm feeling the most right now. THIS ALBUM CONTAINS ALL THE WU-TANG CLAN ORIGINAL MEMBERS. FOR THOSE WHO THINK THAT WU-TANG CLAN MEMBERS GOT BEEF OR THE GROUP NEEDS ANOTHER LP ASAP, Y'ALL NEED TO BUY THIS ALBUM. IF YOU LOVE HIP-HOP (any kind of Hip-Hop), YOU WILL LOVE IT! |
