Gorgeous - Unbelievable performance and presentation,

This review is from: No Se Si Es Baires O Madrid (Audio CD)
The CD
The CD presented is a selection of 16 songs out of the 20 included in the DVD that document the concert of April 24th 2008 in the "Palacio de los Congresos" in Madrid. Songs that were left out are: "Creo" (a second duet with Marlango), "Ciudad de pobres corazones" (Fito playing electric guitar instead of piano), "Y dale alegria a mi Corazon" and "El cuarto de al lado". There is little more I can add in regards to the songs presented here, as I wrote for my review of "Rodolfo", the versions of these songs in piano are intimate, powerful and beautiful at the same time. Fito toured with "Rodolfo" performing songs from that album as well as classic songs in piano version. Some highlights of this live recording are "Tumbas de la Gloria", "El amor despues del amor", "Giros", "La rumba del piano" and "Petalo de sal" (incorrectly labeled "Petalos" in the DVD) This release is the result of that tour. For this recording, Fito invited some of his friends and artists he admires, together they deliver an excellent album with some fortunate versions of classics, others not so fortunate, but overall another impeccable release from Fito. The album sounds great and the order of the songs was altered for obvious pacing reasons when listening to it, the result is superb, but if something can be better than the audio of this concert in Madrid, is the concert itself. The DVD One complain I always have with the releases from Sony/BMG is the treatment they give to these materials, take for instance the releases for the live recording "Ahi vamos" from Gustavo Cerati or the DVD from the Soda Stereo tour "Me veras volver". Well it seems they finally learned their lesson or at least someone knowledgeable got involved in this project and the result is gorgeous. The concert was recorded using Hi-Def cameras and is presented in 16:9 anamorphic aspect ratio. I watched this on a 50" HDTV using a DVD upscaler and it looked beautiful for a DVD, the colors and the detail Hi-Def bring were worth every penny spent on this CD+DVD set. Concert is presented in both stereo and 5.1. The release indeed does justice to the contents. The concert opens with "11 y 6" followed by "Tumbas de la Gloria" and "El amor despues del amor". "Dos dias en la vida" has a new arrangement with Diego del Morao, Sabu and Dani Noel, they also do a great job updating "La rumba del piano" (originally included in "Del 63") making it one of the best versions of the album. "El cuarto de al lado", that beautiful piece from "Rodolfo" and written for his kids is also included. Leonor Watling from Marlango performs an excellent version of "Petalo de sal" (originally sung with L.A. Spinetta) and "Creo". Then Ariel Rot comes in and performs the classical "Giros", one of the highlights of the album. Pereza, in my opinion, perform a very poor version of "La rueda magica", understandable as it is very hard to top what Fito, Calamaro and Charly Garcia did with the original. One of the best moments of the concert comes with Joaquin Sabina, with whom Fito performs the only song in the set list not written by him: "Contigo", the interpretation of these two "Intimate enemies" is a remarkable moment of the concert (as Fito states in the documentary included "A circle has been closed"). Gala Evora and Mavi Diaz are ok but not at the level of the other guests, unfortunately they are in charge of two important songs: "Un vestido y un amor" and "Y dale alegria a mi Corazon". Pablo Milanes makes also an special appearance to perform "Yo vengo a ofrecer mi Corazon" I can provide as many details as come to mind but nothing can describe how great this concert is, to me as a fan of Fito and many of the artists invited, this is an unforgettable performance I know I'll watch over and over. THE EXTRAS Only extra included is a documentary incorrectly named "Backstage" as it really covers the rehearsals with each one of the artists invited (Pablo Milanes was for some reason not included here) It is short, which is ok as the compression rate is not as high resulting in an excellent video quality during the concert, and has some fun moments when rehearsing. To me the most interesting part of it (and somehow disappointing) is the one in which Fito walks on the streets of Madrid with Joaquin Sabina (a couple ladies recognize them), to later perform together "Llueve sobre mojado", song that was performed in the concert but not included in the DVD (nor the CD) Excellent in content and with an equally excellent presentation, "No se si es Baires o Madrid" is to me one of the best albums of 2008.

Although a bit overacted at some points of the show, this one yet could definitely work quite well as career-spaning review for Fito Paez, one out of the three musketeers from Argentina's contemporary music. The viewer can even notice Fito's obsession with perfection, as he watches and follow closely every single movement of his guest stars, just like if he was conducting an orchestra, which he's not. The same virtue that helped mostly on smashing his relations with Joaquín Sabina a decade back, but which (apparently) were restored on this show, as one of the biggest highlights of the whole recording in both DVD and CD... To be honest, when I first heard the CD I felt a kind of estate... like if I was listening to a remix version of "Rodolfo" or like if I simply paid for a Fito's hits collection when I was looking for a live performance. But then I watched the enclosed DVD, and the world went down. That was the only way I witnessed the true feeling of the whole show, which I will never ever regret enough for not attending, when I had the chance to. Actually, the segment where Fito finds back Joaquin Sabina in Madrid for rehearsals (Day 5) on the "backstage bonus track", in the DVD, is a must-see for any fan of either any of them... perhaps there's no comeback alike on the spanish music scenario so far. Intimate. Touching. Soothing. Genuine. Highly recommended. A true gem. Tracklisting for DVD: 1. 11 y 6 2.
