More About the Author

My name is Peter Moore and I'm an Australian travel author.

Basically, my job is to go on grand journeys and write about them. I've travelled overland from London to Sydney (The Wrong Way Home), from Cape Town to Cairo (Swahili for the Broken-Hearted) and around Italy on a forty-year-old Vespa (Vroom with a View). I also travelled around Central America with a girl I'd only just met (The Full Montezuma). I'm just finishing a book about driving around Australia in an old car with a new wife (Crikey!).

I'd like to think that my books convey the stuff that I love about travelling - the people you meet and the crazy situations you find yourself in. I constantly find myself in situations that you couldn't make up. Like sheltering in a coffin shop during a riot in Addis Ababa. Or being assured by an Iranian nuclear physicist that my country would be safe in the event of a nuclear war. And I'm constantly overwhelmed by the hospitality of people in even the poorest countries

If I had to describe my books I'd say they were kind of like a cross between Bill Bryson and Paul Theroux. But whereas Bill and Paul can flash their platinum Amexes, I have to be a bit more careful with my pennies. But to be honest I've found that's the best way to meet the locals.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my books. As Oprah would say "they'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry, they'll change your life."

Well, at least I wish she'd say that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, January 15, 2004
By A Customer
I must say, I was intrigued by the title and ready to read some fantastic accounts of a veteran traveller to exotic, unexplored places...but it reads more like a series of "Top Ten lists" saying, "this is so crazy", "this is so dirty"! Really not recommended for anyone who has lived abroad, or had experience in other countries. More for college kids who want to spend a summer or year after their studies hanging out with other ex-pats in tourisy places, saying, "Wow man, things are really cheap in Thailand!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Never have I read a book this quick, June 5, 2003
By
Sarcastic, hilarious but at times practical peice of work. Some of Moore's findings provided warning/tips during my own trips. Others stirred up my curiousity and provided ideas/reasons to visit the places I've never been interested before. Hard to stop once you start reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even the Stewardess was Laughing..., July 14, 2004
I picked this up in Heathrow on the way back from a week in southwestern Siberia, a hellhole of a place, and this book was so on target with all the random idiocy and kindness and suspicion and just plan wonderment you stumble into once you leave the main thoroughfares trough London, Tokyo and Sydney and find yourself in way-out-of-the-way places and situations you could never imagine--until that very moment. Read it on the flight from Heathrow and my laughing prompted the stewardess to read a few pages. She had tears in her eyes from laughing so hard.
