5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Masterpiece, August 26, 2005
This review is from: No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical (Audio CD)
This is..probably, the best album I have ever heard. Honestly:

1- A Llama Eats A Girrafe (and vice versa) 10/10 it's a great starter for this incredible album. fast paced loud music that will pull you in. and an amazingly good bridge.

2- Dead By Dawn 7/10- This is my only skip track on the album, it's a great song, but it doesn't stand out.

3- Mouth Like A Magazine 9/10- They get a little bit softer here, but is still amazing.

4- If You Like Me Check Yes, If You Don't I'll Die 10/10 I consider this a love song. this song has a ton of screaming and inredible lyrics.

5- Sampsa Meets Kafka- 9/10 Just a minute of insanity.

6- So Selfish It's Funny 9/10- great drums, great singing, great screaming, great song.

7- The Missing Wife 8/10- It's the only relaxing song on here. great singing.

8- Welcome To Plainfield ,Tobe Hooper 10/10- Flat out unbelievable from start to finish.

9- And The Smokers And Children Shall Be Cast Down 10/10 A kind of slow song, but none the less, a great one.

10- Stabbing Art To Death 11/10- Overrated? Yes. it's amazing.

11- The Dissonance Of Discontent- 10/10- Exactly 3 minutes of crazy riffs and a haunting bridge.

12- Matthias Replaces Judas 10/10 This song really proves that Josh (singer) is an amazing singer. great song.

13- The Bell Jar- 9/10- There should be an explosion at the end of this song. it's great.

Overall, this is an unbelievable album from the one and only Showbread. They cannot top this. It's not humanly possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diffrent in such a good way, June 20, 2005
This review is from: No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical (Audio CD)
When I first saw them on Tooth and Nail's website, I started shaking my head, wondering just what the heads that be were thinking.

Then I got curious, I think it was the red and black outfits that got me, and the keytar. So I decided to listen to 'Mouth like A Magazine' on purevolume, man was I blown away, it was like nothing I had heard before.

Usually I'm not a sucker for the scremo and hardcore bands that solid state pumps out, aside from Project 86 and Demon Hunter I've kind of hit my head against my desk for that type of sound, it sounds exactly like nothing but loud noises with no feeling.

Well my friends, Solid State has finally pumped out a golden one, something the not so 'hardcore listeners' and the usual fans of this genere will enjoy this intelligent piece of work.

When I unwrapped this, little did I know that I would be (and still am) addicted to this band, their sound is amazing, hypnotizing to say the least, I sat in my room with my headphones blaring just listening to this unique treat that I had bought with hesitation.

I Totally recomend them to you, but be wary, because not everyone will like Showbread, people that are into light airy music will NOT and I repeat NOT like showbread, most of my friends like them, but the ones still into tweeny music and light airy music did NOT like showbread because they couldn't make out the screaming [Although when I showed one of my friends the lyrics she thought they were quite exquisite and beautiful].

Aside from that, if you can handle the rather mild screaming (and mild as in, you can understand them but they still are rather screaming) Then I think you'll be fine, It grows on you and settles into your heart.

Now, for ratings.

1. Llama Eats a Giraffe (And Vice Versa) 10/10

I love this song, it starts well and ends solid, the lyrics jar in your brain and dance around, you might even laugh as I did when I heard the chainsaw at the end.

2. Dead By Dawn 10/10

Heavy driving guitars and bass guide this song into a seemingly morbid sounding end, but as dark as it sounds, it's lovely for those stormy days.

3. Mouth Like a Magazine 10/10

*grin* the anchor song, the one that draws you in to them with it's driving lines and words about people who can't shut up about gossip. They keytar and the lyrics carry this masterpiece

4. If You Like Me Check Yes, if You Don't I'll Die 8/10

I do like this song (ok sure it's not my favorite), especially how it drops out of the screaming into an interlude with finger snapping momentarily and pulls you back in.

5. Sampsa Meets Kafka 6/10

I didn't really like this one as much out of all of them, it's not quite as solid and kind of technos on you, it's alright, but eh.

6. So Selfish It's Funny 10/10

This song drives, slows, drives, and slows, I can listen to it and laugh because of what he's saying and how it's so true.

7. Missing Wife 10/10

The title of this slower song makes one smirk, the song itself is the slowest bit they have but it's mesmerizing in it's own simple way and in no way cuts down the album in any way.

8. Welcome to the Plainfield Tobe Hooper 9/10

This one pounds and thumps into your ears, but not in a way where you're screaming to get out, you want to stay and listen.

9. And the Smokers and Children Shall Be Cast Down 10/10

This song may be slower, but it never slows down, it keeps going and you feel like it won't end and that's a good thing.

10. Stabbing Art to Death 11/10

I've overated this one you think? No way, this is the best piece on the album as well as the longest song, it slows down, speeds up, takes you on a ride, and makes you shake and want to bounce around with it.

11. Dissonance of Discontent 9./10

Very much a tradtional sounding hardcore song with a twist, and of course it rains.

12. Matthias Replaces Judas 8.5/10

A slower song, again, but it's diffrent, you don't expect why it's slow.

13. Bell Jar 9.5/10

In True form, they go out with a bang, heavy and loud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Showbread Is Best of Show, January 7, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: No Sir, Nihilism Is Not Practical (Audio CD)
Showbread is definitely not what you would expect out of a Christian rock band--they exceeded my expectations! Their raw rock (spaz/hardcore/punk/retro/emo) is refreshing for the music world and full of energy. My top favorite songs are "Dead By Dawn," "Mouth Like a Magazine," and "Matthias Replaces Judas." The songs are so wonderfully written and different, which makes it very enjoyable. One thing I did not entirely like about the album was the excessive screamo, going back and forth between the two vocalists. It was good on the first few tracks, but by the end, it wears you out. Thank goodness for intermissions like "The Missing Wife" and "Matthias Replaces Judas." All in all, this album will be glued to your CD player for an eternity!
