No strings...,

This review is from: No Strings Attached (Paperback)
Nancey Flowers is finally back on the literary scene after her 2002 release Shattered Vessels. In her new book, NO STRINGS ATTACHED, we meet friends Felice and Sylvah. Felice has been hurt not once, but twice, by men and refuses to be a fool to love again. After the heart-ache, she bounces back and it's all about her. She doesn't mind being the other woman, with many men to accommodate her sexual preferences, because her pledge is to living her life as she chooses, and with no strings attached. She's all about Felice, regardless of the situation, predicament, or consequence of her actions. Sylvah is learning to love herself again after her husband asks for a divorce. Though she loves and despises him, the realization that her marriage is over still isn't an easy adjustment, but what Sylvah needs is a dose of self-esteem. After losing a bit of weight and spending some time with herself, she just might notice the opportunities before her.
Through interactions with the men in their lives, their other two girlfriends (who have their own set of issues),and the unbelievable situations in which the characters place themselves, NO STRINGS ATTACHED boldly flaunts infidelity, betrayal, lies, and secrets. When starting this novel, I felt myself thinking the book would be another one of the "my man left me, I'ma get him back" or "my man left me, I don't need a man," type books, but not long after starting the book, I could see that Flowers had a few surprises in store for readers. She weaves in a few twists to the storyline, introduces characters I hope to see again, and made me stand and applaud their actions a few times. I won't go into the drama, but yep, that's thrown into the mix too and the end result is a book with three-dimensional characters who will make you question why they are the way they are. In the midst of shouting "you go girl, " you may stop to reflect on yourself or those you associate with from day to day. NO STRINGS ATTACHED is a fast-moving tale painting a realistic view of the complexities of life and how one lives it. Flowers writes lyrically and breathes life into her characters. What I really connected to was how she blends humor throughout the dialogue and rounds the story out with a valuable lesson on taking responsibility for actions, past and present. While I really enjoyed NO STRINGS ATTACHED, I wasn't overly happy with the ending as I didn't feel everything was wrapped up, all questions answered. I do, however, look forward to the continuation as I'm sure some of the characters will be back to finish their stories. Flowers left just enough open to keep her fans waiting until the next release. "Love 'Em, Then Dump 'Em",
By
This review is from: No Strings Attached (Paperback)
No Strings Attached is the sequel to Nancey Flowers blockbuster novel Shattered Vessels where we are first introduced to Bedford, Felice and Sandy.
No Strings Attached is a sexy, sassy novel that is true to its title. The characters of Felice, Candace, Sylvah and Alana are the ultimate sister friends who truly live by the credo - No Strings Attached. These freinds have been such for 20 years and we are taken through the trials and tribulations of each character exposing each of their dreams, fears and secrets. Secrets - one which has caused Felice to suffer from terrible nightmares and debilitating migraine headaches. After the demise of her once highly touted marriage to Bedford, Felice has embodied the concept of "love 'em and leave 'em." Candace harbors a secret that may ultimately damage her successful, secure marriage to her detective husband. After spending 20 years in a marriage with a controlling husband, Sylvah decides a change is needed and files for divorce. This sparks Sylvah's newfound empowerment and single womanhood. She earns her law degree and explores her awakening sexual libidos. Alana, on the other hand, is the sister friend you might not want on your side at all times. Her true colors shine through when the women take a much derserved trip to Jamaica. When things don't go exactly as planned, the essence of her being is exposed. Ms. Flowers has accomplished many things with this novel. She delivers a novel filled with love, betrayal and trust amongst friends and family while delivering the raw, sometimes poignant complexities of life. Nancey also stays true to the demographics of her native Brooklyn, NY with various referrals to key locales. Ever present is her loyalty and respect to her fellow scribes giving fair mention to both their bodies of work and names. A page turner from beginning to end with an ending worthy of a continuance. Felice is a successful partner of a financial consulting firm with her ex-husband Bedford Jackson. Their marriage ended when Felice walked in on Bedford and another woman. After the divorce. Felice meets sexy basketball player Aaron Carter. She thinks he's "the one" until she discovers a devastating secret. Having been burned twice by men, Felice decides to engage in physical relationships with a "no strings attached" philosophy. She is living the fabulous single life until her past catches up with her. Felice has a secret that she now has no choice but to face. Felice's closest friends have their own problems. Sylvah is in the middle of a divorce from her longtime husband Blaise. She's also trying to make sure the emotional needs of her college-age children are being met. Sylvah's daughter Kenya is taking it all in stride but her son Zaire is not. Zaire's failing grades and depressed state causes Sylvah to be concerned. On top of all this, Sylvah is juggling two men. Hunter and Jason are both successful business men. The problem is one of them is white and the other one is 13 years her junior. Who will she choose? Candace has a loving husband and two children. When she goes to Jamaica and makes a bad decision, she is left with regrets. Candace becomes worried when threatening mysterious phone calls and letters show up at her home. Alana is single, alone, and jealous of Candace. She brings nothing but drama and unhappiness to everyone's lives.
No Strings Attached is an edge-of-your-seat page turner by Nancey Flowers. Flowers does an excellent job of plot and character development. The characters are real and honest. Even though Felice is the central main character of the novel. Sylvah and Candace's stories are just as pivotal. Candace's own saga even continues in Nancey Flowers' upcoming book "One Night Stand" set to be released sometime in 2006. No Strings Attached is a superb novel for the blooming career of Nancey Flowers.

First let me say kudos to Ms. Flowers for writing such an endearing book. As I was reading this book, I just knew that she must've been peeking into my world. I happen to be newly single and I'm out and about dating and my new motto is "No String's Attached." However, my husband is not my business partner and I didn't catch him sleeping with my secretary. I probably would have killed him if I were in Felice's shoes.
Nonetheless, No Strings Attached is a witty book full of humor and real life situations. I can't say the amount of times I reflected and saw myself in the main character Felice's shoes. The chapter titles had me laughing out loud and the dating scenarios of Felice will keep you turning the pages. The other character Sylvah was also a trip. She's recently divorced (you'll applaud her for leaving her asinine ex-husband) and finds herself in a love triangle. She has to choose between dating a man that is 13 years her junior and a man who is close to her age, but he's white. In this day and age interracial relationships shouldn't be an issue. However, sometimes it's not just all about you, it's about the people around you and Sylvah has to decide whether love will conquer all in both cases. Eventually she does end up with one, but I won't say. Then there are Felice's other two good friends, sweet and shy Candace, that is until she goes to Jamaica and her world begins to fall apart and Alana. Now that chick has problems, but we all know someone just like her, even if she's not in our circle. Most people try to stay away from folk like Alana, but she added a good mixture to the book. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the sequel One Night Stand the previous book, Shattered Vessels. Ms. Flowers keep up the good work. You are definitely doing your thang!

I met Nancy Flwoers a few days ago at a bookstore. I bought the book to support her and she asked that if I enjoyed it, please leave her a review on Amazon.com. From beginning to end, I was hooked. I read it in about two days and can't wait for the continuation. You wil enjoy the realistic characters and the writing style in general. I don't want to spoil it, so I'll stop here. Its just a reminder that EVERYONE has a story and certain circumstances make us the way we are-good or bad. It is up to the individual to explore the way they cope with their "baggage." Nancey Flowers has a new fan.

Felice Jackson is successful, beautiful, and intelligent but is unlucky in love. After catching her husband ( and business partner) in bed with their secretary, she is afraid to love again until she meets Aaron Crane, a basketball player who sweeps her off her feet and with whom she allows herself to fall in love with....that is until the shocking and unexpected truth comes out. Tired of men and their lies, Felice decides to change her approach and develops a new attitude. She sees nothing wrong with sleeping with 4 or 5 men at a time with "no strings attached". Meanwhile her best friend Sylvah is dealing with the breakup of her 20-year marriage, so in celebration of Sylvah's birthday, Felice, Sylvah, and their other 2 closest friends, Candace and Alana decide to take a trip to Jamaica to get their "grooves" back. It is then that their lives begin to travel on an unexpected path, Candace makes a mistake that may cost her everything and the ladies begin to see Alana for who and what she truly is as she allows her jealousy of Candace to show the real "Alana". Sylvah decides to embark on relationships with not one but two men: much younger but successful Jason and handsome but white Hunter. After tragedy strikes, Sylvah must decide which direction her life will go. After suffering recurrent nightmares, Felice's past begins to catch up with her and all of her skeletons begin to fall out of the closet as shocking secrets come to light. No Strings Attached is one of those stories that will have you thinking long after you put it down, it's a wonderful story about friendship, forgiveness, and self-redemption as Felice not only learns to forgive those who have hurt her but also herself. It is a must-read, as it is a page-turner from beginning to end. The ending leaves the door open for a sequel as this is only the beginning for Candace and her story will continue in "One Night Stand", can't wait to see what happens next!!!
