5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, haunting, memorable, June 5, 1998
This review is from: No Sun in Venice (Audio CD)
In exchange for giving a Brit a bunk in my home in the mid sixties, he gave me this album, a London label, I believe. I wore it out oil painting in the wee hours of the morning. It has remained my favorite MJQ album. In the Eighties, I searched all the music stores in San Francisco, Berkeley area, etc. No luck. I'm so happy to have discovered it in your inventory.

Thanks, Allan Jones

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique recording, January 16, 2002
This review is from: No Sun in Venice (Audio CD)
This album was this 56 year old jazz pianist's first jazz record. It's still as haunting and beautiful as when I first heard it. Lewis' compositions are impeccable and Jackson swings hard over them. This is a quiet album that you will enjoy for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful record, November 5, 2006

This review is from: No Sun in Venice (Audio CD)
This is great movie jazz of the late nineteen-fifties, in a row with the MJQ's own "Odds Against Tomorrow", Miles Davis' "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud", the Jazz Messengers' "Des femmes disparaissent", and Duke Ellington's "Anatomy of a Murder". Excellent, if a bit top-heavy, sound. True jazz lovers may want a little more improvisation here and there, but should respect John Lewis' great score, which is done with great purpose and dexterity.
