I just don't get it,
By vincevangopher (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: No Time To Bleed (Audio CD)
I am a fan of the more extreme side of metal, and after reading many great reviews of this album and seeing it on several "Best of" lists, I picked this up. Maybe it's the whole deathcore thing that I don't get, but I find this album almost unlistenable. It's loud and fast and aggressive, but there's not much as far as groove, and the songs are quite forgettable. I guess I'm more of a progressive metal fan (Mastodon, Gojira, Meshuggah) and this is just not for me.

The Human Machine Has Finally Bled...,
By Jeremy Brackeen "themetalbeast" (Cameron, WI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: No Time To Bleed (Audio CD)
First off, I didn't really care much for Suicide Silence's 2007 full length debut "The Cleansing". True, it was a heay, loud, brutal, and decent outing, but I found it to be rather generic and overhyped, although it did have a few songs that actually stood out. I'm not saying it was a bad album, it just simply could've been better to be honest. However, with their 2009 sophmore release "No Time to Bleed", this Riverside, California deathcore quintet have returned as a more stronger and focused killing machine, and have stepped up to their game here with tighter song structures, stronger musicianship, and better production, big thumbs up to Machine (who's also produced albums by Lamb of God) for the album's production by the way. According to vocalist Mitch Lucker, this whole album was tracked in the studio as opposed to being recorded live in the studio like their first album was. I bought this album just about three weeks ago, and I was greatly impressed with it from start to finish. From the nasty, bludgeoning, chaotic opener "Wake Up" to the closing moments of "Disengage", NTTB puts the pedal to the metal and never lets off the gas from there. This album definately blows "The Cleansing" right out of the water. Mitch Lucker's vocals are very impressive here, as he leads the prowl throughout here with an excellent mixture of chaotic, bloodcurling, and frightening high pitched screams and sick, menancing, gutteral death metal growls. Guitarists Chris Garza and Mark Heylmun really shine here, belting out chaotic, blistering, and crushing riffs and they also throw in some nice quality solos here and there for good measure, and skinsman Alex Lopez dominates and obliterates behind the drums, keeping the brutality and aggression alive and well with slamming double bass onslaughts and mad, pulverizing blast beats that'll get the mosh pits going like crazy.
The Highlights: NTTB opens up with the nasty and chaotic opener "Wake Up" which is definately my favorite song on the whole album bar none, and is highlighted by ballistic screams, slaughtering, grinding guitars, menacing double bass kicks, and there's also a nice mesmerizing solo thrown in as well as a tom roll near the end. Next up, "Lifted" boasts some more slamming drumwork, and more sick, crazed vocals, and some sweet melodic harmony sweeping around 3:02 and continuing on until the song fades out. The following cut "Smoke" opens shortly with some jagged machine gun riffing and double bass before going into an all out bruising, blazing speedfest with rapid blasting, maniacal riffing, and chaotic and frightening screaming and growling. The next two songs "Something Invisible" and the title track both continue the brutal madness. Both tracks are bruising, abrasive skull crushers, that are highlighted by more ballistic screams and growls, chaos induced riffs and hammering drums, especially the title track which also features a crushing breakdown near the end. Track six "Suffer" is a monstrous skull crushing number that is highlighted by hateful screams, heavy, mammoth earthshaking riffs, and a nice winding and wailing solo is also included, and track eight "Wasted" is another wicked fast blaster that includes more frantic screaming, rapid drum blasting, hot earthshaking riffage, and another blistering solo thrown in for good measure. One unique track, that being "...And Then She Bled" is a creepy instrumental track that consists of a recording of a 911 emergency phone call from a woman named Charla Nash, who was attacked by a domesticated chimpanzee on February 18, 2009. All in all, "No Time to Bleed" is a great step forward for Suicide Silence, and they've really impressed me with the direction that they've taken with this new album of theirs. Call them whatever you want, deathcore, metalcore, death metal, hardcore, whatever, it's all extreme heavy music to me, and that's exactly what Suicide Silence are, and if you are an open minded fan of extreme heavy music, then by all means, this album will not dissapoint... Recommended!!

Time to listen,

Suicide Silence have definately done some growing since their debut, The Cleansing. The song structures in No Time To Bleed are simply a joy to listen to, and yet they still manage to sound brutal as hell. Almost all the songs are filled with a sence of pain or agony. At first, I was a little mad that they decided to throw an insturmental into the mix(...and then she bled) but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and atmospheric songs on the album. To be honest, I was one of the fans that really liked the Cleansing even if there was a slight repitition problem, but here, Suicide Silence proves that they're one of the leading figures in the deathcore movement
