I just don't get it,
By vincevangopher (Connecticut) - See all my reviews

I am a fan of the more extreme side of metal, and after reading many great reviews of this album and seeing it on several "Best of" lists, I picked this up. Maybe it's the whole deathcore thing that I don't get, but I find this album almost unlistenable. It's loud and fast and aggressive, but there's not much as far as groove, and the songs are quite forgettable. I guess I'm more of a progressive metal fan (Mastodon, Gojira, Meshuggah) and this is just not for me.

The Human Machine Has Finally Bled...,

First off, I didn't really care much for Suicide Silence's 2007 full length debut "The Cleansing". True, it was a heay, loud, brutal, and decent outing, but I found it to be rather generic and overhyped, although it did have a few songs that actually stood out. I'm not saying it was a bad album, it just simply could've been better to be honest. However, with their 2009 sophmore release "No Time to Bleed", this Riverside, California deathcore quintet have returned as a more stronger and focused killing machine, and have stepped up to their game here with tighter song structures, stronger musicianship, and better production, big thumbs up to Machine (who's also produced albums by Lamb of God) for the album's production by the way. According to vocalist Mitch Lucker, this whole album was tracked in the studio as opposed to being recorded live in the studio like their first album was. I bought this album just about three weeks ago, and I was greatly impressed with it from start to finish. From the nasty, bludgeoning, chaotic opener "Wake Up" to the closing moments of "Disengage", NTTB puts the pedal to the metal and never lets off the gas from there. This album definately blows "The Cleansing" right out of the water. Mitch Lucker's vocals are very impressive here, as he leads the prowl throughout here with an excellent mixture of chaotic, bloodcurling, and frightening high pitched screams and sick, menancing, gutteral death metal growls. Guitarists Chris Garza and Mark Heylmun really shine here, belting out chaotic, blistering, and crushing riffs and they also throw in some nice quality solos here and there for good measure, and skinsman Alex Lopez dominates and obliterates behind the drums, keeping the brutality and aggression alive and well with slamming double bass onslaughts and mad, pulverizing blast beats that'll get the mosh pits going like crazy.
The Highlights: NTTB opens up with the nasty and chaotic opener "Wake Up" which is definately my favorite song on the whole album bar none, and is highlighted by ballistic screams, slaughtering, grinding guitars, menacing double bass kicks, and there's also a nice mesmerizing solo thrown in as well as a tom roll near the end. Next up, "Lifted" boasts some more slamming drumwork, and more sick, crazed vocals, and some sweet melodic harmony sweeping around 3:02 and continuing on until the song fades out. The following cut "Smoke" opens shortly with some jagged machine gun riffing and double bass before going into an all out bruising, blazing speedfest with rapid blasting, maniacal riffing, and chaotic and frightening screaming and growling. The next two songs "Something Invisible" and the title track both continue the brutal madness. Both tracks are bruising, abrasive skull crushers, that are highlighted by more ballistic screams and growls, chaos induced riffs and hammering drums, especially the title track which also features a crushing breakdown near the end. Track six "Suffer" is a monstrous skull crushing number that is highlighted by hateful screams, heavy, mammoth earthshaking riffs, and a nice winding and wailing solo is also included, and track eight "Wasted" is another wicked fast blaster that includes more frantic screaming, rapid drum blasting, hot earthshaking riffage, and another blistering solo thrown in for good measure. One unique track, that being "...And Then She Bled" is a creepy instrumental track that consists of a recording of a 911 emergency phone call from a woman named Charla Nash, who was attacked by a domesticated chimpanzee on February 18, 2009. All in all, "No Time to Bleed" is a great step forward for Suicide Silence, and they've really impressed me with the direction that they've taken with this new album of theirs. Call them whatever you want, deathcore, metalcore, death metal, hardcore, whatever, it's all extreme heavy music to me, and that's exactly what Suicide Silence are, and if you are an open minded fan of extreme heavy music, then by all means, this album will not dissapoint... Recommended!!

Time to listen,

Suicide Silence have definately done some growing since their debut, The Cleansing. The song structures in No Time To Bleed are simply a joy to listen to, and yet they still manage to sound brutal as hell. Almost all the songs are filled with a sence of pain or agony. At first, I was a little mad that they decided to throw an insturmental into the mix(...and then she bled) but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and atmospheric songs on the album. To be honest, I was one of the fans that really liked the Cleansing even if there was a slight repitition problem, but here, Suicide Silence proves that they're one of the leading figures in the deathcore movement

This cd is much better than the cleansing. I'm a bit dissapointed with how theres only ten songs when the cleansing had fourteen but these tracks are definitley more catchy. Also, the cleansing was recorded live (not at a show, as a group) so it tends to sound blurred over but nttb was tracked for awesome sound quality. A must buy for fans of bloody fast brutal deathcore.

Way better than The Cleansing,

I thought The Cleansing was a decent album and it got me into these guys enough to pick up this album as well. This one has wayyyy more songs that are "listenable" than their previous outing. There actually seems to be a bit more structure to the songs. Some favorites are: "Lifted", "Smoke", "Suffer", "Wasted", "Your Creations", and "Genocide"

With Suicide Silence you either love them or hate them. I have seen very few people on the fence. I love this band and I love this album. The Cleansing was a very good album. No Time To Bleed is a great album! I love the death metal vokills and the machine gun blast beats meshed with the chugtastic guitars and bass. Wake Up, Lifted, .....and then she bled, Disengage, the title track, all standouts. Mitch's vokill skills just keep getting better. Deathcore is definitely my genre and SS are one of my faves

Not incredible, but not as bad as people say they are.,
This review is from: No Time To Bleed (Audio CD)
I'm a pretty wide minded Death/ Thrash/ Grind metal fan (yes, I am a guy..writing on my mom's account...how convienent)so I have a pretty open mind when it comes to extreme metal. So when I started hearing all of this ranting on how Suicide Silence was known to be "a disgrace to metal"...I decided to check them out for myself, they really didn't turn out to be as bad as I intended they would be. In fact, I actaully really started to get into them. Now to be completely honest, the fist song I heard by them was Bludgeoned to Death and to be honest I wasn't too impressed so I moved on. Now granted, I thought they actually had potential so I listened to their other tracks and I stumbled upon "No time to Bleed" and my view on them immediately changed. I saw a great change in style on this album apart from the Cleansing. First thing I noticed, the vocals were A LOT more clear. Mitch's highs were cleaner and less 'poppy.' His growls are a lot louder, as they are actually growls, not low-toned grunts like the Cleansing. The songs are a lot faster and didn't seemed as rushed apart from the debut, and *Huh!* there are SOLOS!! Maybe only a few, but still an improvement. Now with that said, I still admit myself SS is a little on the generic side, but they do know how to make their music powerful, aggressive, and crushing.
Apart from the band, I am starting to get the sense that people are only looking down upon this band because of their commercial success and fanbase. And what I've come across from all of the 'anti-core' elitists, this band is known to be 'trendy' or 'mallcore' when that's really not the case at all. (Hence, I've seen more Slayer and Megadeth merchindise in Hot Topic than I have Suicide Silence) I mean, sure, a lot of scenesters listen to this (what bandwagon don't they jump on) but fanbases shouldn't be an aspect of the band's overall sound. I'm still curious as to how this whole "Suicide Silence is emo" stereotype started because there are many bands with similar qualities that aren't getting the emo coin tossed at them. I mean they don't write about failed relationships and other topics catering angst teen culture, so whatever this reason is, it's beyond me. And I'm not some trendy scene kid either, in fact I have a disgust for mainstream trends. With an open mind I DO understand why someone wouldn't like this, but this band is vastly over-hated. I can name plenty of bands that deserve twice the hate this band gets. So many metal fans I have come across have become hypocritical and very biased about this band. I mean sure these guys aren't AMAZING, and they havent done anything we haven't seen before, but people act like they are the worst band ever, and with vague reasoning. I still see people making the Bree bree sarcasm....I've listened to this and The Cleansing the whole way through and I didn't find a hint of pig squealing. I hope this clears things up, this band is a bit simplistic, sure, but I just feel they are way over-hated. This band isn't for everyone. it's not something you should hate just because 'true' metalheads hate it, not is it something you should like just because everyone else likes it. If you're a fan of Death metal, Grindcore, or Deathgrind, or any form of extreme metal, give them a try. However if you like more organized songs with more dynamic riffs, this probably isn't for you.

Am I the only one who think they suck?,

This review is from: No Time To Bleed (Audio CD)
They can kinda play their instruments, but nobody ever told them how to write songs. Every song sound the same, and they all are bad. Tempo changes and breakdowns are good when used properly (like August Burns Red, Born of Osiris, etc), but when mashed together with no particular structure, it is really difficult to listen to and enjoy. And the vocals...again, variation is good, but at least try to make it work with the music. I love death metal, deathcore, and all that stuff, but I just cannot for the life of me figure out why everybody seems to blow their load over this band.
Want some good deathcore? Check out All Shall Perish, Burning Skies, or Despised Icon...to name a few.

sub-par core crap,

Wow, can you say repetitive? I can't believe they can get away with basically writing the same songs over and over again. Lead vocals are highly annoying, how could listen to a whole album of Mitch's emocore screeching? They can somewhat play their instruments, but its all very repetitive-- the drumming, oh my gosh... this band is LOUD, and that's all.. don't buy.. check out Nile for good technical metal, not these guys...

The grounds will shake and your children will tremble,

The last outing by Deathcore favorite's Suicide Silence was like listening to a three minute track looped for fourty minutes. Safe to say I was not a fan, however after sitting through No Time To Bleed my opinion of them has risen significantly. With tighter structure, more experimentation, better production and even more brutality NTTB is an excellent release.
Right off the go the album starts off chaotic and doesn't let off the gas. Mitch Lucker's vocals have never sounded better and I am not a fan of the higher pitched screams but his are very well executed. Axemen Garza and Heylmun however steal the show by putting down some chaotic riffs and even manage to belt out some quality leads. Percussion is good as well and plenty of unrelenting double bass work to flail around to in the pit. The focus for NTTB's lyrical content seems to revolve around the general downfall of all the is Earth and the Human Race. At least that's what I got from it. The lyrics are the only aspect that were any sort of let down. Just think the music would sound far better if the band relied more on the music rather then constantly having vocals during the better portion of the tracks. Though this is merely a personal preference, so don't be discouraged. All in all it really comes down to if this is for you. If your into the faster more chaotic side of the Metal universe chances are this will be a fair listen for you. If you prefer the more progressive approach, look elsewhere. A very straight forward album with no filler and a big step in the right direction for the band. Fans of The Cleansing definitely need to pick this up. Thanks for your time, keep supporting The Metal!! |
