Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–Never mind that the pouting face on the cover of this book is that of a young fox–this preschooler's concerns will strike at the heart of every parent and child sharing the story. When Anna arrives home from school full of plans for her afternoon, she encounters a grumpy Mama who says no to everything her daughter wants. Seeking revenge, the child spends the rest of the day spurning her mother and wanting only Daddy. This technique seems to suit Anna just fine until bedtime, when the ritual of going to sleep is missing the key elements of a story and a kiss from her mother. When Mama appears at the door, all is forgiven, making way for a satisfying conclusion. Simple sentences tell this universal story and make it ring true. The illustrations feature thick black lines and an earthy palette of tans, greens, and a foxlike reddish brown. Despite the heavy lines, the characters' emotions shine through on their faces and in their body language: Anna's peevish expression complete with hard eyes and crossed arms; Daddy's astonishment over this sudden change in roles; and Mama's sadness at her little girl's rejection. Perfect for storytime and bedtime, this book will be a popular read-aloud choice.–Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

What happens when Mama is not in the best of moods and says "No" to Anna's requests? Well soon enough Anna is not in a good mood either and wants Daddy to do all the things Mama would normally do. Anna soon learns that this attitude leaves her feeling that something is wrong. A well-written story with charming illustrations and an important lesson, No, I Want Daddy! is a recommended children's book.

Anna is a little fox who has big plans for her day after school. She gets home and wants to watch tv, eat candy and invite a friend over to play. He mom says no to all of her plans! This make Anna mad and she decides that only her dad will be allowed to do things with her! She is angry with her mother! When bedtime comes she just doesn't feel right with out a story and hug from her mom and decides to forgive her.

Everyone has a bad day some time. This shows that some times even the best parents take their fustrations out on their kids even when they don;t mean to. The book is a great discussion starter for kids and parents.

This fantastic tale for young children is sure to delight parents and kids. It will bring about lots of good discussions on moods and feelings.

As a mommy whose daughter constantly prefers daddy, I was very drawn to this book. I was hoping that the moral would be that even though mommy is sometimes the "bad guy", everything she does is for the child's own good. Instead, at the end of this book, the mommy apologizes for not giving her child candy and television. She tells her daughter that it's just because she was having a bad day. Why would a mom apologize to her child for forbidding two very harmful, unhealthy things?

I checked this book out from the library, and I will NOT being reading it again to my daughter. I do not want my daughter thinking that candy and television are a right and not a privilege, and I do not want her to think that I would ever apologize for keeping her healthy and active.
