Book Description

September 26, 2006
A powerful new saga from the author of Too Close to the Sun.

This is the moving story of one woman’s struggle against great odds, with a need to belong, and a heart tragically divided. Having spent her childhood with a cold, unfeeling stepmother, Lily Clair finds her life changed forever when she is sent as a general maid to old friends of her family. At first she finds the routine rather dull, but this soon changes when the handsome Joel, son of a wealthy entrepreneur, comes on the scene. For the young and vulnerable Lily, meeting Joel is the best thing that has ever happened.

Riding high on the crest of her new-found happiness, Lily is not prepared for the violent attack that comes in the night, and neither is she prepared for its devastating, life-changing consequences. But live with those consequences she must, as with a heart torn, she must deal with one hand of fate after another.

Building to an unforgettable climax set against a plague-ravaged rural England, Lily Clair’s is an unforgettable and touching story of one woman’s search for love and fulfillment.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"* 'If all sagas were as convincing and exuberant as this, the world would be a better place. I loved it' - Monica Dickens * 'Jess has really captured the sense of a family united against great odds. The heroine, Abbie, is strong but flawed as all good heroines should be and as we follow her triumphs and trails we see her change from a girl to a woman in the most dramatic and satisfying of ways' - Iris Gower * 'A gripping saga...The author writes with exuberance and style, and the central characters are totally convincing. The climax of the story is superbly etched' - Northampton Chronicle & Echo * 'A compulsive and well-paced story' - Wiltshire Times * 'An earthy tale of love, longing and tragedy' - Swindon Evening Advertiser" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most depressing book I have ever read, December 22, 2011
This review is from: No Wings To Fly (Paperback)
This book begins with a beautiful main character, Lilly, who is shoved back three steps for every one she takes forward. In the beginning of the book, Lilly is about fourteen and has three years left before she can become a teacher. She has an evil, sharp-tongued stepmother and a loving, but harsh, father. When the father's pay is reduced, the parents tell Lilly that she cannot go back to school and will be sent to the home of a couple known by them to become a general maid. The poor child is expected to send a portion of her earnings back home. Maybe I just like happily-ever-after books but there is very little happiness in this book. In fact, it starts off on a sad note and gets progressively worse all the way to the end.
